Tony Murphy
Shooting guard or scoring guard, which do you want? Very often players are labeled as being this type of player or that type of player, many times to the detriment of their overall talents.
Fortunately for Tony Murphy (193-G-86, agency: KMG Sports Management, college: Norfolk St.) that is not the case. A shooting guard who can both score and shoot, Murphy has been a premier scorer since his High School days at Paterson Eastside HS where he was named the North Jersey Player of the Year both by the Bergen Record and Herald News.
After a stellar senior season Murphy went on to star for Norfolk State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (NCAA D1), finishing in the top-five in conference scoring for three seasons and completing his collegiate career as Norfolk State's seventh all-time leading scorer with 1,815 points. Also ranks as the school's all-time leader in three-point field goals made (262) and attempted (746). A prolific scorer and shooter, Murphy was looking ahead to his professional career.
His first oversees assignment came in Portugal where he played for Angrabasket/Palmeiraspark in 2009-10 and set the Proliga on fire, finishing #2 in scoring (22.6ppg) to go along with a balanced line of 4.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and an impressive 2.4 steals in 21 games. After venturing to the Dominican Republic, the 6-4 Murphy returned to Portugal to play for Forum Terceira Basket in the LPB (top division). Once again, his scoring prowess was on display as he finished second in the league in scoring at 18.6ppg. Unfortunately the club faced serious financial troubles last season, leading to the departure of Murphy and his other foreign import teammates.
Now with the 2012-13 season looming around the corner Murphy is looking for the next opportunity to show that no matter what you want to call the position, shooting guard or scoring guard, Tony Murphy will bring the goods to the table.

Q. Briefly, describe what assets Tony Murphy can bring to a basketball team?
A. I can be a leader, especially by example. I don't like losing and I love to win. I have a very good basketball IQ so I can be a coach on the floor. I can also bring scoring to a team in a variety of ways and I can also set up my teammates for scoring opportunities.

Q. What was the biggest difference in playing in the Portuguese Proliga versus LPB?
A. The main difference is that the guys are bigger and stronger. I would also say that the players are more skilled in the LPB (first) division.

Q. Besides scoring, what part of your game do you take the most pride in?
A. I take pride in my defense and passing. I feel that I am underrated in both areas. I understand help defense very well, I'm always up at the top in steals... that started back when I was in college. Defense is just will and I pride myself in shutting my man down. I also love to pass, everywhere I have played I have surprised people with my passing ability.

Q. What is the biggest lesson you have learned in your time as a professional player?
A. I have learned a lot in my time. The most important thing is WIN... I know what teams expect from me and I know what I have to do on and off the court. I know I need to always perform at a high level everyday and put in extra work when I'm not at practice. I also know that a team is supposed to take care of the players and make them feel at home. Unfortunately that did not happen with me and my teammates last year.

I would also like to thank you and Eurobasket for taking the time to profile me and for all the exposure you provide to players across the globe. Personally I am very grateful and appreciative of all your support.
