CAB Madeira strengthened their frontcourt. They added Joao Guerreiro (205-F-90) to the roster. The forward spent the previous season in Barreirense. Joao Guerreiro posted 4.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in LPB. It was his fifth straight season with the team. Joao Guerreiro used to play for U16, U18 and U20 Portuguese National Teams. He participated at U20 European Championship in Austria in 2010. The forward delivered 10.5 points, 6.3 rebounds per game at the tournament. Joao Guerreiro was Hugo dos Santos Cup Finalist with Barreirense last season. CAB Madeira is schedule to tip off new LPB season on October 20th against Benfica.

Benfica was trailing by 5 points at halftime but managed to get 5-point lead after three quarters before a 15-10 charge of Academica, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time. It was a great evening for the former international point guard Mario Fernandes (176-82) who led his team to a victory scoring 28 points and 9 assists (went 14 for 14 at the free throw line !!!). American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) helped adding 14 points and 14 rebounds. The best for the losing side was the former international Joao Gomes (201-85) with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 17 rebounds and American guard LaceDarius Dunn (193-87, college: Baylor, agency: Three Eye Sports) scored 22 points and 6 rebounds (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!). But the home team turned things around in the second half. Oliveirense shut down defensively. They held Maia Basket to 15 points in the third quarter to take a 54:52 lead at the final intermission. The home side went on a deadly 22:9 rally in the fourth frame to seal the triumph at the end. Joao Abreu (179-G-83) delivered 19 points and 6 assists for Oliveirense.
