LPB Round 5: Vitoria SC edges Galitos-Tley by three points - Nov 18, 2012

The most exciting game of round 5 in the LPB took place in Barreiro. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 7th ranked Galitos-Tley (1-4) to leader Vitoria SC (4-0) 87-84 on Sunday evening. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Galitos-Tley won third quarter 27-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Vitoria SC made 18-of-22 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was naturalized Cape Verdean guard Ivan Almeida (198-89, college: Stonehill, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) who had a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds. The former international forward Paulo Cunha (200-80) chipped in 14 points and 8 rebounds. American forward Perry Stevenson (206-87, college: Kentucky) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks for the hosts. Vitoria SC have a solid series of four victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Benfica. Galitos-Tley lost third consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the tenth place with four games lost. Vitoria SC is looking forward to face Ovarense (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Galitos-Tley will play against Fisica (#8) in Torres Vedras and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The former international forward Heshimu Evans (198-75, college: Kentucky) orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points and 8 rebounds. LaceDarius Dunn contributed with 20 points for the winners. Benfica's coach Carlos Lisboa felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Forward Mohamed Camara (196-83) answered with 15 points and 7 rebounds for Lusitania. Benfica have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 4-0 record, which they share with Vitoria SC. Lusitania lost third consecutive game. They keep the seventh position with three games lost. They share it with Fisica and Sampaense. Benfica will play against Barcelos (#6) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Lusitania will play against Alges to get more than just one victory in their record.
Bottom-ranked Alges (0-4) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 78-61 loss to fourth ranked Academica (3-1) in Alges on Saturday evening. Arnette Hallman stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 16 rebounds for the winners. Josimar Cardoso responded with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Academica maintains fourth place with 3-1 record. Newly promoted Alges still closes the standings with four games lost. Academica will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Alges will play against Lusitania (#7) in Angra and hope to get finally their first victory.
The game in Funchal was also worth to mention about. 5th ranked Barcelos (2-3) played at the court of sixth ranked CAB Madeira (2-1). CAB Madeira did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 94-76. Jason Smith nailed 27 points for the winning side. CAB Madeira moved-up to fifth place. Barcelos at the other side dropped to the sixth position with three games lost. CAB Madeira's next round opponent will be Sampaense (#9) in Coimbra. Barcelos will play at home against the league's leader Benfica.

In the last game of round 5 Sampaense were defeated by Ovarense in a road game 85-68.


Galitos-Tley - Vitoria SC 84-87

Ovarense - Sampaense 85-68

There was no surprise when 8th ranked Sampaense (1-3) was defeated on the road by third ranked Ovarense (4-1) 85-68. Sampaense was ahead by 3 points at the halftime before a 50-30 second half run of Ovarense. They made 20-of-26 charity shots (76.9 percent) during the game, while Sampaense only scored two points from the stripe. The former international forward Miguel Miranda (205-78) nailed a double-double by scoring 18 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side and guard Jose Miguel Barbosa (176-90) accounted for 19 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Five Ovarense players scored in double figures. American forward Al Rapier (200-89, college: Stony Brook, agency: Dynamics Global Management) came up with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists and swingman Carlos Ferreirinho (200-91) added 17 points respectively for Sampaense in the defeat. Ovarense have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain third place with 4-1 record having just -1 point less than leader Benfica. Sampaense at the other side dropped to the seventh position with three games lost. Ovarense's next round opponent will be league's second-placed Vitoria SC in Guimaraes and it will be for sure the game of the week. Sampaense will play at home against CAB Madeira (#5) in Funchal and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Alges - Academica 61-78

Bottom-ranked Alges (0-4) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 78-61 loss to fourth ranked Academica (3-1) in Alges on Saturday evening. The guests trailed by 9 points at the halftime before their 44-18 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Academica dominated on the defensive end, holding Alges to just 7 points in fourth quarter. They outrebounded Alges 35-23 including 22 on the defensive glass. American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 16 rebounds for the winners and international center Marco Goncalves (206-84) chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds. Four Academica players scored in double figures. Naturalized Guinea-Bissau forward Josimar Cardoso (201-87) responded with 17 points and 7 rebounds and guard Antonio Pires (185-86) scored 14 points and 6 assists. Academica maintains fourth place with 3-1 record. Newly promoted Alges still closes the standings with four games lost. They also forced 19 Barcelos turnovers. American guard Jason Smith (183-83, college: Al.-Huntsville) nailed 27 points for the winning side and the former international Jorge Coelho (200-78) accounted for 16 points. Four CAB Madeira players scored in double figures. Montenegrin forward Marko Loncovic (200-91) came up with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 16 rebounds and Slovenian forward Matic Sirnik (200-91) added 21 points respectively for Barcelos in the defeat. CAB Madeira moved-up to fifth place. Barcelos at the other side dropped to the sixth position with three games lost. CAB Madeira's next round opponent will be Sampaense (#9) in Coimbra. Barcelos will play at home against the league's leader Benfica.
