The game between third ranked Vitoria SC (4-2) and fifth ranked CAB Madeira (4-2) was the most important one in the last round on Saturday night. Vitoria SC was defeated by CAB Madeira in a tough game in Funchal 85-92. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 22-16. But Vitoria SC won second period 27-22. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. CAB Madeira looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Vitoria SC's players. It was a great evening for the former international Jorge Coelho (200-78) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points and 5 rebounds. American guard Jason Smith (183-83, college: Al.-Huntsville) helped adding 14 points and 7 assists. At the losing side American guard Charlie Swiggett (185-86, college: Wisc.-Milwaukee) responded with 30 points. CAB Madeira moved-up to third place, which they share with Academica and Vitoria SC. CAB Madeira is looking forward to face Fisica (#7) in Torres Vedras in the next round. Vitoria SC will play at home against the league's leader Benfica (#1) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Academica (4-2) against fifth ranked CAB Madeira (4-2) on Sunday night. Visiting Academica was defeated by CAB Madeira in a tough game in Funchal 73-78. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Academica. It was an exceptional evening for American power forward Shawn Jackson (203-71, college: Johnson C. Smith) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jason Smith accounted for 19 points and 4 assists. American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) came up with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for Academica in the defeat. CAB Madeira moved-up to third place, which they share with Academica and Vitoria SC. CAB Madeira will play against Fisica (#7) in Torres Vedras in the next round. Academica will play on the road against Barcelos (#6) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
LPB top team - Benfica (6-0) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed seventh ranked Sampaense (2-4) 103-56. LaceDarius Dunn fired 30 points for the winners. Benfica's coach Carlos Lisboa felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Al Rapier produced 19 points and 8 rebounds for lost side. Undefeated Benfica have an impressive series of six victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 6-0 record. Sampaense at the other side keeps the seventh position with four games lost. They share it with Fisica. Benfica will meet Vitoria SC (#5) in the next round. Sampaense will play against Alges and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Alges (#9) forced the game against Barcelos (#8) into an overtime, but lost by four points 92-96. The game took place in Alges. But the guests from Barcelos were better at the end. Worth to mention a great performance of Marko Loncovic who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 19 points and 16 rebounds. Barcelos (3-4) moved-up to sixth place. Newly promoted Alges keep the ninth position with five games lost. Barcelos' next round opponent will be higher ranked Academica (#4) in Coimbra and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Alges will play on the road against Sampaense (#8) in Coimbra and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 7 Fisica lost to Ovarense on the opponent's court 48-59. Academica managed to outperform Lusitania in a home game 66-55.


Ovarense - Fisica 59-48

Very expected game when 6th ranked Fisica (2-4) was defeated on the road by second ranked Ovarense (6-1) 59-48. The game without a history. Ovarense led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Ovarense outrebounded Fisica 42-31 including 30 on the defensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of Spanish power forward Sergi Coll (204-82) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds. International Fernando Neves (194-80) contributed with 13 points for the winners. Ovarense's coach Carlos Pinto allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Cape Verdean guard Braima Freire (188-82) answered with 19 points and 6 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) and point guard Carlos Barroca (182-84) added 11 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Fisica. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Ovarense. They maintain second place with 6-1 record having just -1 point less than leader Benfica. Newly promoted Fisica dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. Ovarense's next round opponent will be Galitos-Tley (#10) in Barreiro and are hoping to win another game. Fisica will play at home against CAB Madeira in Funchal.

The hosts were ahead by 2 points but lost the second period ending it with a 1-point deficit before their 22-10 run, which allowed them to win the game. Academica forced 21 Lusitania turnovers. Worth to mention a great performance of American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 14 points and 17 rebounds. Forward Joao Balseiro (192-87) contributed with 24 points and 5 steals for the winners.
