Liga Feminina Round 10: Lousada surprise league leading Alges - Dec 11, 2012

There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with change at the leadership position and favorites losing the games.

Round 10 in Liga Feminina means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Lousada where host Lousada (3-6) edged league's leader Alges (8-2) 63-60 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Alges. Lousada have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to eighth place. Defending champion Alges dropped to the second position with two games lost. They share it with GDESSA and Olivais. They were replaced at the leadership position by Lombos Quinta. Alges will play next round against league's leader Lombos Quinta trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Lousada will try to continue on its current victory against ninth ranked CDTorres N. in Torres Novas.
The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Olivais (8-2) in Coimbra. Hosts were edged by Lombos Quinta (8-1) 64-61. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Olivais. It was a key game for the top position in the league as both teams had the same 7-1 record before this meeting. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Haily Dunham (188-87, college: USC, agency: Merit Sports) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds. Felicite Mendes contributed with 9 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Lombos Quinta's coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American center Lady Comfort (188-86, college: Temple) replied with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 13 rebounds for Olivais. Lombos Quinta have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. Olivais at the other side dropped to the second place with two games lost. They share the position with GDESSA and Alges. Lombos Quinta will play against Alges (#4) at home in the next round. Olivais will play against Montijobanda and hope to get back on the winning track.
A very close game took place in Angra Heroismo between AD Vagos and Boa Viagem. Seventh ranked AD Vagos (6-4) got a very close victory on the road over 5th ranked Boa Viagem (6-5). AD Vagos managed to escape with a 2-point win 57-55 in the fight for the fifth place. AD Vagos moved-up to fifth place. Loser Boa Viagem dropped to the sixth position with five games lost. AD Vagos will meet at home bottom-ranked Ovarense (#12) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Boa Viagem will play against CAB Madeira (#7) in Funchal and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Leader Alges delivered the eighth victory. This time they beat 10th ranked Academico FC (2-10) 64-51. Laura Broomfield notched 17 points and 9 rebounds to lead the effort. Alges' coach Jose Araujo used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Alges (8-2) have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Despite that victory Alges went down to second position due to points difference, which they share with GDESSA and Olivais. Academico FC lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the eleventh place with ten games lost. Alges' next round opponent will be league's leader Lombos Quinta in Carcavelos and it will be for sure the game of the week. Academico FC will play at home against the league's second-placed GDESSA (#2) in Barreiro.
Bottom-ranked Ovarense (0-10) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 70-53 loss to ninth ranked CDTorres N. (3-7) in Ovarense on Saturday evening. CDTorres N. maintains ninth position with 3-7 record. Newly promoted Ovarense still closes the standings with ten games lost. CDTorres N. will face higher ranked Lousada (#8) at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Ovarense will play against AD Vagos (#5) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

In the last two games of round 10 Montijobanda was defeated by Lousada in a road game 70-64. GDESSA beat CAB Madeira at home 69-63.
The best stats of 10th round was 19 points and 25 rebounds by Christina Dewitt of Lousada.


Alges - Academico FC 64-51

Leader Alges delivered the eighth victory. This time they beat 10th ranked Academico FC (2-10) 64-51. It looked good early as Academico FC took an 5-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Alges had a 17-10 second period charge getting the lead and Academico FC was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 51-64. Alges dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Academico FC's 26. Alges forced 21 Academico FC turnovers. American forward Laura Broomfield (185-90, college: N.Carolina) notched 17 points and 9 rebounds to lead the effort and center Barbara Pedro (183-89) supported her with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Alges' coach Jose Araujo used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even 16 points and 6 rebounds by Joana Ferreira did not help to save the game for Academico FC. Guard Joana Cruz (168-92) added 12 points and 9 rebounds for lost side. Alges (8-2) have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Despite that victory Alges went down to second position due to points difference, which they share with GDESSA and Olivais. Academico FC lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the eleventh place with ten games lost. Lousada - Montijobanda 70-64

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both ninth ranked Lousada and 8th ranked Montijobanda had identical 2-6 record. This time Lousada used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Montijo 70-64 on Saturday night. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 24-13. But Montijobanda won second period 21-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Lousada made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. Lousada outrebounded Montijobanda 57-34 including a 34-12 advantage in offensive rebounds. The game was dominated by American players. Forward Christina Dewitt (188-87, college: N.Carolina, agency: Gamble Sports Management) fired a double-double by scoring 19 points and 25 rebounds for the winners. Forward LaKeisha Mosley (185-89, college: W.Kentucky) chipped in a double-double by scoring 19 points and 16 rebounds. Guard Cherise Daniel (180, college: Ohio St.) produced 31 points and 7 rebounds and power forward Monae Baker (185, college: Shippensburg) added 16 points and 7 rebounds respectively for lost side. Lousada have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to eighth place. Montijobanda at the other side, also newcomer in the league, dropped to the tenth position with seven games lost. GDESSA - CAB Madeira 69-63

No shocking result in a game in Barreiro where fourth ranked GDESSA (8-2) defeated 6th ranked CAB Madeira (5-3) 69-63 on Saturday. CAB Madeira was trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 20-13 charge of GDESSA, which allowed them to win the game. GDESSA outrebounded CAB Madeira 40-22 including a 23-12 advantage in defensive rebounds. The former international Vera Correia (178-80) fired 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. American power forward Keyona Bryant (186, college: St.Augustine) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. Four GDESSA players scored in double figures. American forward Jheri Booker (183, college: Tennessee St.) produced 22 points and the former international power forward Debora Escorcio (186-84) added 13 points and 8 rebounds respectively for lost side. CAB Madeira's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. GDESSA moved-up to second place, which they share with Olivais and Alges. Loser CAB Madeira dropped to the seventh position with three games lost. GDESSA will face Academico FC (#11) in Porto in the next round and are hoping to win another game. CAB Madeira will play at home against Boa Viagem (#6) in Angra Heroismo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
