LPB Round 10: No surprise as #1 Benfica defeats Galitos-Tley - Dec 23, 2012

LPB top team - Benfica (9-0) added another victory to their record on Saturday. This time they beat eleventh ranked Galitos-Tley (1-8) in Barreiro 83-79. The guests trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 15-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 83-79. Benfica outrebounded Galitos-Tley 45-24 including a 31-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. The former international forward Heshimu Evans (198-75, college: Kentucky) had a double-double by scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and the former international point guard Diogo Carreira (180-78) chipped in 17 points and 6 assists during the contest. At the losing side the former international point guard Pedro Pinto (188-88) responded with 29 points and 4 assists. Galitos-Tley's coach Antonio Paulo Ferreira rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Undefeated Benfica have an impressive nine-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 9-0 record. Galitos-Tley lost seventh consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom place with eight games lost. They share the position with Alges. Benfica are looking forward to face Ovarense (#4) at home in the next round. Galitos-Tley will play against Alges (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in Guimaraes was also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Academica (7-2) played at the court of 5th ranked Vitoria SC (5-4). Academica defeated Vitoria SC 82-70. American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) notched a double-double by scoring 14 points and 18 rebounds to lead the effort and Tim Toler supported him with 17 points. Even 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists by naturalized Cape Verdean guard Ivan Almeida (198-89, college: Stonehill, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) did not help to save the game for Vitoria SC. Academica have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Ovarense and CAB Madeira. Vitoria SC at the other side keeps the fifth position with four games lost. Academica will play against Fisica (#8) in Torres Vedras in the next round where they are favorite. Vitoria SC will play on the road against Lusitania in Angra and hopes to get back on the winning track.
A very close game took place in Coimbra between Sampaense and Lusitania. Seventh ranked Sampaense (4-5) got a very close home victory over 9th ranked Lusitania (1-7). Sampaense managed to escape with a 3-point win 77-74 on Saturday evening. Steve Baker fired 20 points for the winners. Sampaense's coach Jose Calabote used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Marcel Momplasir produced 21 points and 9 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field) for lost side. Sampaense moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Barcelos. Lusitania lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with seven games lost. Sampaense will meet Barcelos (#6) on the road in the next round. Lusitania will play against Vitoria SC in Guimaraes.

Alges will play at home against Galitos-Tley (#11) in Barreiro and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The most impressive stats of the last round was 27 points and 4 steals by Joao Manuel of Alges.


Sampaense - Lusitania 77-74

A very close game took place in Coimbra between Sampaense and Lusitania. Seventh ranked Sampaense (4-5) got a very close home victory over 9th ranked Lusitania (1-7). Sampaense managed to escape with a 3-point win 77-74 on Saturday evening. Lusitania was trailing by 4 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 29-25 charge of Sampaense, which allowed them to win the game. American guard Steve Baker (187-90, college: Green Bay) fired 20 points for the winners. Swingman Carlos Ferreirinho (200-91) chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds. Baker is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Sampaense players scored in double figures. Sampaense's coach Jose Calabote used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American center Marcel Momplasir (205-81, college: Rhode Island) produced 21 points and 9 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field) and his fellow American import guard John Huggins (188-82, college: Amer.Internat.) added 22 points respectively for lost side. Sampaense moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Barcelos. Lusitania lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with seven games lost. Sampaense will meet Barcelos (#6) on the road in the next round. Lusitania will play against Vitoria SC in Guimaraes.

Fisica - Alges 79-76

A very interesting game took place in Torres Vedras. It ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 10th ranked Alges (1-8) to eighth ranked Fisica (3-6) 79-76 on Saturday evening. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Alges won third quarter 21-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Fisica won last quarter 23-21. Worth to mention a great performance of Guinea-Bissau Franklim Furtado (198-87) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws). Edson Rosario (193-82) contributed with 18 points and 5 assists for the winners. Four Fisica players scored in double figures. American forward Jamarkus Holt (205, college: Delta St.) replied with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 13 rebounds and the former international swingman Joao Manuel (192-79) added 27 points and 4 steals (made all of his nine free throws !!!) in the effort for Alges. Newly promoted Fisica maintains eighth position with 3-6 record. Alges lost fourth consecutive game. Alges at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keep the tenth place with eight games lost.
