LPB is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 11 rounds left. Coincidentally all hosts won their games.

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Benfica. Leader Benfica faced 4th placed Ovarense. Host Benfica (10-0) defeated guests from Ovarense (7-3) 91-80. The game without a history. Benfica led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Benfica outrebounded Ovarense 33-17 including 20 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was the former international Joao Gomes (201-85) who scored 23 points and 9 rebounds. American forward Seth Doliboa (203-80, college: Wright St.) chipped in 19 points and 6 rebounds. Spanish power forward Sergi Coll (204-82) produced 28 points and 7 rebounds for the guests. Undefeated Benfica have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 10-0 record. Ovarense at the other side keeps the fourth position with three games lost. Benfica are looking forward to face CAB Madeira (#3) in Funchal in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Ovarense will play on the road against Alges and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Angra, where higher ranked Vitoria SC (5-5) lost to tenth ranked Lusitania (2-7) in a road game 64-71. American center Marcel Momplasir (205-81, college: Rhode Island) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 13 rebounds. John Huggins contributed with 21 points (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the winners. Naturalized Cape Verdean guard Ivan Almeida (198-89, college: Stonehill, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) answered with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 15 rebounds for Vitoria SC. Lusitania moved-up to ninth place. Vitoria SC at the other side keeps the fifth position with five games lost. They share it with Barcelos. Lusitania will play against higher ranked Fisica (#8) in Torres Vedras in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Vitoria SC will play on the road against Barcelos and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Other games of round 11 were very predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Fisica was defeated by Academica in Coimbra 70-63. Barcelos beat Sampaense at home 90-83. Bottom-ranked Galitos-Tley lost to Alges on the opponent's court 64-71.
The best stats of 11th round was 25 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists by Nuno Oliveira of Barcelos.



Academica - Fisica 70-63

There was no surprise in Coimbra where 8th ranked Fisica (3-7) was defeated by third ranked Academica (8-2) 70-63. It looked good early as Fisica took an 9-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Academica had a 23-7 second period charge getting the lead and Fisica was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 63-70. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Fisica to just 7 points in second quarter. Forward Joao Balseiro (192-87) orchestrated the victory by scoring 19 points and 5 rebounds. American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) contributed with 15 points for the winners. Four Academica players scored in double figures. point guard Carlos Barroca (182-84) answered with 20 points and 4 steals and naturalized Mozambican guard Ricardo Rodrigues (185-81) added 15 points and 5 assists in the effort for Fisica. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Academica. They moved-up to second place. Newly promoted Fisica keeps the eighth position with seven games lost. Academica will play against bottom-ranked Galitos-Tley (#11) in Barreiro in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Fisica will play on the road against Lusitania in Angra and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

We should mention about the upset which took place in Angra, where higher ranked Vitoria SC (5-5) lost to tenth ranked Lusitania (2-7) in a road game 64-71. Vitoria SC was ahead by 4 points at the halftime before a 41-30 second half run of Lusitania. They brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. American center Marcel Momplasir (205-81, college: Rhode Island) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 13 rebounds. His fellow American import guard John Huggins (188-82, college: Amer.Internat.) contributed with 21 points (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the winners. Barcelos - Sampaense 90-83

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both sixth ranked Barcelos and 7th ranked Sampaense had identical 4-5 record. This time Barcelos used a home court advantage and defeated the opponent from Coimbra 90-83. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 27-21. But Sampaense won second period 26-21. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Barcelos made 18-of-21 charity shots (85.7 percent) during the game. Sampaense was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. International point guard Nuno Oliveira (186-89) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Montenegrin forward Marko Loncovic (200-91) contributed with 23 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Swingman Carlos Ferreirinho (200-91) answered with 26 points and 7 rebounds and American forward Al Rapier (200-89, college: Stony Brook, agency: Dynamics Global Management) added 21 points and 11 rebounds in the effort for Sampaense. Five Barcelos and four Sampaense players scored in double figures. Barcelos (5-5) moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Vitoria SC. Maia Basket Clube (LPB) strengthened their roster with addition of 26-year old French forward Matt Gamberoni (208-113kg-91, college: Trevecca Nazarene). He supposed to play at Stevnsgade BBK in Danish Ligaen, but was released by the team in October. In three games he recorded 5.3ppg, 4.0rpg and 1.0spg this season.
