Tyeasha Moss
The most exciting game of round 14 in the Liga Feminina took place in Coimbra. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 3rd ranked Olivais (9-4) to first ranked GDESSA (11-2) 66-65 on Saturday evening. Olivais were trailing by 5 points at halftime but managed to get 10-point lead after three quarters before a 26-15 charge of GDESSA, which allowed them to win the game. They also forced 19 Olivais turnovers. American guard Tyeasha Moss (175-90, college: Xavier) saved the victory by scoring 24 points and 5 rebounds. The other American import power forward Keyona Bryant (186, college: St.Augustine) contributed with 8 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. American center Lady Comfort (188-86, college: Temple) replied with 19 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) for Olivais. GDESSA have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 11-2 record. Olivais at the other side dropped to the fourth place with four games lost. GDESSA are looking forward to face Alges (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Olivais will play against Boa Viagem in Angra Heroismo and are hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
Bottom-ranked Ovarense is still unable to win any game. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. This time they lost on the road their 13th consecutive match to second ranked Lombos Quinta (10-2) 82-24. Center Maria Kostourkova (188-97) had a double-double by scoring 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Haily Dunham chipped in 15 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Forward Susana Cardoso (177-92) responded with 8 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Lombos Quinta maintains second position with 10-2 record behind leader GDESSA. Newly promoted Ovarense still closes the standings with 13 games lost. Lombos Quinta will play against CDTorres N. (#8) in Torres Novas in the next round where they are favorite. Ovarense will have a break next round.
The game in Funchal was also quite interesting. 5th ranked AD Vagos (9-5) played at the court of sixth ranked CAB Madeira (8-3). CAB Madeira managed to secure a 8-point victory 59-51 on Saturday. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of AD Vagos. Maria Correia notched 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort. Even a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds by Ebony Ellis did not help to save the game for AD Vagos. CAB Madeira have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain sixth position with 8-3 record. Loser AD Vagos keep the fifth place with five games lost. CAB Madeira will meet at home Lousada (#9) in the next round. AD Vagos will play against Academico FC (#10) in Porto and hope to secure a win.
