Proliga Round 12: Maia Basket loses to Sangalhos - Jan 14, 2013

The most important game in the last round took place in Sangalhos between second ranked Maia Basket (9-2) and fifth ranked Sangalhos (7-4) on Saturday night. Maia Basket was defeated by Sangalhos in a tough game on the road 48-55. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Maia Basket. The hosts trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 10-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 55-48. Sangalhos dominated on the defensive end, holding Maia Basket to just 6 points in second quarter. They made 18-of-22 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. It was a good game for swingman Emanuel Silva (188-79) who led his team to a victory with 12 points and 9 rebounds (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). Forward Luis Fonte (191-79) contributed with 12 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. The former international forward Nuno Marcal (205-75) replied with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 20 rebounds for Maia Basket. Sangalhos moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Guifoes. Maia Basket at the other side keeps the second position with two games lost. They share it with Electrico FC. Sangalhos is looking forward to face league's second-placed Electrico FC in Ponte de Sor in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Maia Basket will play on the road against Illiabum in Ilhavo and is hoping to win this game.
Bottom-ranked Terceira managed to get a second victory, breaking the four-game losing streak. This time they won against tenth-ranked Leca 73-56. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 17-point difference suggests that Terceira is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. Terceira (2-9) moved-up to tenth place. Leca lost tenth consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the bottom position with ten games lost. Terceira will play against higher ranked Guifoes (#5) on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Leca will play against Angrabasket (#8) to get more than just one victory in their record.
The game in Ilhavo was also quite interesting. Third ranked Electrico FC (9-2) played at the court of 6th ranked Illiabum (6-5). Electrico FC managed to secure a 8-point victory 63-55 on Saturday. The winners were led by Mario Neves who scored that evening 9 points and 11 rebounds. Even 18 points by Eugenio Silva did not help to save the game for Illiabum. Illiabum's coach Alexandre Pires rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Electrico FC have an impressive five-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Maia Basket. Loser Illiabum keeps the sixth position with five games lost. Electrico FC will meet Sangalhos (#4) on the road in the next round. Illiabum will play against Maia Basket and hope to secure a win.
The game between 9th ranked Benfica B (3-8) and second ranked Oliveirense (10-1) in Lisboa ended with biggest points difference. Guests from Oliveira beat Benfica B 67-53. The best player for the winners was Nuno Cortez who had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 14 rebounds. Benfica B's coach Goran Nogic tested twelve players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Oliveirense have an impressive five-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. Newly promoted Benfica B dropped to the eighth place with eight games lost. Oliveirense's next round opponent will be Ginasio (#7) in Figueira da Foz where they are favorite.

In the last game of round 12 Angra was beaten by Guifoes on the road 78-69.

Benfica B - Oliveirense 53-67

The game between 9th ranked Benfica B (3-8) and second ranked Oliveirense (10-1) in Lisboa ended with biggest points difference. Guests from Oliveira beat Benfica B 67-53. It looked good early as Benfica B took an 2-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Oliveirense had a 23-13 second period charge getting the lead and Benfica B was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 53-67. Oliveirense forced 19 Benfica B turnovers. The best player for the winners was the former international center Nuno Cortez (205-82) who had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 14 rebounds. The former international guard Joao Reveles (187-80) chipped in 9 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. At the other side the best for losing team was power forward Candido Sa (202-92) who recorded a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds and guard Diogo Gameiro (184-95) added 13 points respectively. Benfica B's coach Goran Nogic tested twelve players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Oliveirense have an impressive five-game winning streak. Illiabum - Electrico FC 55-63

Even 18 points by guard Eugenio Silva (190-90) did not help to save the game for Illiabum. International Miguel Queiroz (202-91) added 8 points and 10 rebounds. No shocking result in a game when fifth ranked Guifoes (7-4) beat at home 8th ranked Angrabasket (3-8) 78-69. Guifoes have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Sangalhos. Angrabasket lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with eight games lost. Guifoes' next round opponent will be Terceira (#10) in Angra Heroismo where they are favorite. Angrabasket will play on the road against Leca.
