Proliga Round 15: No surprise as #1 Oliveirense defeats Leca - Feb 5, 2013

Proliga top team - Oliveirense (13-1) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed eleventh ranked Leca (1-11) in Oliveira 94-55. The game was mostly controlled by Oliveirense. Leca managed to win fourth quarter 11-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Oliveirense forced 24 Leca turnovers and outrebounded them 35-20 including 22 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 7 passes made by Leca's players. It was a great evening for the former international center Nuno Cortez (205-82) who led his team to a victory scoring 24 points and 9 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). The former international guard Joao Reveles (187-80) helped adding 11 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. The best for the losing side was naturalized Angolan forward Paulo Ferreira (187-80) with 8 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Oliveirense have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They maintain first place with 13-1 record. Leca lost eleventh consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with 11 games lost. Oliveirense will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Leca will play at home against Guifoes (#5) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that they can break losing series.
An interesting game took place in Guifoes where higher ranked Guifoes (7-6) were upseton its own court by tenth ranked Terceira (4-10) 65-52. It was an exceptional evening for forward Frederico Tavares (194-88) who led the winners and scored 19 points and 6 rebounds. Joao Torrie accounted for 10 points and 13 rebounds. Forward Fabio Fernandes (201-86) came up with 13 points and 5 rebounds for Guifoes in the defeat. Terceira moved-up to eighth place. Guifoes at the other side keep the fifth position with six games lost. Terceira will play against higher ranked Angrabasket (#7) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Guifoes will play against Leca and hope to get back on the winning track.

In the last two games of round 15 Ginasio lost to Electrico FC on the opponent's court 56-70. Maia Basket outscored Benfica B in a home game 99-63.


Electrico FC - Ginasio 70-56

Very expected game in Ponte de Sor where 8th ranked Ginasio (3-10) was defeated by second ranked Electrico FC (12-2) 70-56. The game was mostly controlled by Electrico FC. Ginasio was better in second period 11-9. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Electrico FC dominated down low during the game scoring 44 of its points in the paint compared to Ginasio's 20. They outrebounded Ginasio 38-25 including 28 on the defensive glass. Ginasio was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. It was an exceptional evening for naturalized Cape Verdean swingman Mario Neves (190-77) who led the winners and scored 9 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Tiago Pinto (183-88) accounted for 16 points and 5 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) for the winning side. Guard Tiago Barreiro (187-83) came up with 20 points and guard Alexandre Nuno (187) added 11 points respectively for Ginasio in the defeat. The victory was the eighth consecutive win for Electrico FC. They maintain second place with 12-2 record behind leader Oliveirense. Ginasio lost their fourth game in a row. They dropped to the ninth position with ten games lost. They share it with Benfica B. Electrico FC will play against Maia Basket (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Ginasio will play against Benfica B (#10) in Lisboa and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Very predictable result when third ranked Maia Basket (11-3) smashed at home 9th ranked Benfica B (3-10) 99-63. Maia Basket maintains third place with 11-3 record having just two points less than leader Oliveirense. Benfica B lost their third game in a row. Newly promoted team keeps the ninth position with ten games lost. They share it with Ginasio. Maia Basket will play against league's second-placed Electrico FC in Ponte de Sor in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Benfica B will play on the road against Ginasio (#9) in Figueira da Foz and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Guifoes were tied at the half but could not keep up in last two quarters eventually losing the game. They outrebounded Guifoes 41-28 including a 34-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was an exceptional evening for forward Frederico Tavares (194-88) who led the winners and scored 19 points and 6 rebounds. Power forward Joao Torrie (200-91) accounted for 10 points and 13 rebounds for the winning side. Four Terceira players scored in double figures. Forward Fabio Fernandes (201-86) came up with 13 points and 5 rebounds and guard Pedro Silva (178-82) added 11 points and 5 steals respectively for Guifoes in the defeat. Terceira moved-up to eighth place. Guifoes at the other side keep the fifth position with six games lost. Vitoria SC(LPB) signed experienced 39-year old Portuguese ex-international center Elvis Evora (205-115kg-78) from Oliveirense. In 38 LPB games he had 7.1ppg and 4.1rpg last season. He helped them to make it to the semifinals. A very impressive season as he was named to Eurobasket.com Portuguese League All-Domestic Players Team.
