Electrico FC loses to Maia Basket in the game between Top 4 teams - Feb 11, 2013

The game between Top Four teams took place in Maia. Third ranked host Maia Basket (12-3) defeated one of their biggest challengers Electrico FC (12-4) 65-54. The game was mostly controlled by Maia Basket. Electrico FC managed to win third quarter 21-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Maia Basket forced 21 Electrico FC turnovers. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international forward Nuno Marcal (205-75) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 9 rebounds and center Paulo Diamantino (203-85) who added 11 points and 11 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side guard Tiago Pinto (183-88) responded with 14 points and 4 assists. Maia Basket have a solid three-game winning streak. Maia Basket moved-up to second place. Electrico FC at the other side keeps the third position with four games lost. Maia Basket will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Electrico FC will play on the road against the league's leader Oliveirense in Oliveira and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Leca managed to get the second consecutive victory. This time newly promoted Leca edged fifth-ranked Guifoes 59-56. The winners were led by Tiago Lopes who scored that evening 16 points and 4 steals and Daniel Ramos supported him with 11 points. Even 9 points and 9 rebounds by forward Jose Almeida (199-86) did not help to save the game for Guifoes. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Leca (3-11) moved-up to tenth place. Guifoes lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the sixth position with eight games lost. They share it with Angra. Leca will play against higher ranked Sangalhos (#4) at home in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Guifoes will play against Illiabum in Ilhavo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Angra Heroismo between Angrabasket and Terceira. Seventh ranked Angrabasket (7-8) got a very close victory on the road over 9th ranked Terceira (5-11). Angrabasket managed to escape with a 3-point win 55-52 on Saturday evening. Angrabasket have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Guifoes. Loser Terceira dropped to the eighth position with 11 games lost. Angrabasket will meet Benfica B (#9) in the next round. Terceira will play against Ginasio in Figueira da Foz and hope to secure a win and be promoted back to the LPB just one year after relegation.
10th ranked Ginasio (3-12) was defeated at home by eighth ranked Benfica B (4-11) with the biggest margin this round 71-60. It was a very good performance for Candido Sa who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds. Benfica B's coach Goran Nogic allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Despite that victory Benfica B went down to ninth position due to points difference. Ginasio lost sixth consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom place with 12 games lost. Benfica B's next round opponent will be higher ranked Angrabasket (#7) at home and it may be quite challenging game. Ginasio will play against Terceira (#8) in Angra Heroismo and be promoted back to the LPB just one year after relegation.

In the last game of round 16 Illiabum lost to Sangalhos on the opponent's court 62-69.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 28 points by Nuno Bizarro of Sangalhos.


Leca - Guifoes 59-56

Bottom-ranked Leca managed to get the second consecutive victory. This time newly promoted Leca edged fifth-ranked Guifoes 59-56. Guifoes were ahead by 1 point after three quarters before a 17-13 charge of Leca, which allowed them to win the game. Guifoes were plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. The winners were led by Tiago Lopes who scored that evening 16 points and 4 steals and guard Daniel Ramos (193-91) supported him with 11 points. Even 9 points and 9 rebounds by forward Jose Almeida (199-86) did not help to save the game for Guifoes. Guard Pedro Silva (178-82) added 10 points for lost side. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Leca (3-11) moved-up to tenth place. Guifoes lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the sixth position with eight games lost. They share it with Angra. Leca will play against higher ranked Sangalhos (#4) at home in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Guifoes will play against Illiabum in Ilhavo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Sangalhos - Illiabum 69-62

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both fourth ranked Sangalhos and 6th ranked Illiabum had identical 8-7 record. This time Sangalhos used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Ilhavo 69-62. It looked good early as Illiabum took an 10-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Sangalhos took control and eventually winning the game that evening by 7 points. They made 21-of-25 charity shots (84.0 percent) during the game. It was a very good performance for forward Nuno Bizarro (192-80) who helped to win the game recording 28 points. Guard Jorge Seabra (174-81) contributed with 11 points and 9 assists (made all of his nine free throws !!!) for the winners. Center Pedro Silva (202-78) replied with a double-double by scoring 10 points and 13 rebounds and guard Alexandre Coelho (178-90) added 13 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Illiabum. Four Illiabum players scored in double figures. Sangalhos maintains fourth position with 9-7 record. Illiabum lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the fifth place with eight games lost. Sangalhos' next round opponent will be Leca (#10) on the road where they are favorite. Illiabum will play against Guifoes (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Benfica B outrebounded Ginasio 36-23 including 25 on the defensive glass. 26 personal fouls committed by Ginasio helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a very good performance for power forward Candido Sa (202-92) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with defeat of the leader, derby games and favorites losing the games. The most surprising game was another loss of top-ranked Dragon Force (11-3) in Figueira da Foz on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by fifth ranked Ginasio (6-8) 76-71. Maia Basket Clube (LPB) strengthened their roster with addition of 26-year old French forward Matt Gamberoni (208-113kg-91, college: Trevecca Nazarene). He supposed to play at Stevnsgade BBK in Danish Ligaen, but was released by the team in October. In three games he recorded 5.3ppg, 4.0rpg and 1.0spg this season.
