The most important game in the last round took place in Coimbra between third ranked Ovarense (10-4) and fifth ranked Sampaense (8-6) on Saturday night. Ovarense was defeated by Sampaense in a tough game on the road 80-85. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Ovarense. The hosts trailed by 10 points after three quarters before their 28-13 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Sampaense dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Ovarense's 32. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Steve Baker (187-90, college: Green Bay) who helped to win the game recording 27 points and the other American import forward Al Rapier (200-89, college: Stony Brook, agency: Dynamics Global Management) who added 19 points and 8 assists during the contest. At the losing side the former international forward Miguel Miranda (205-78) responded with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. Sampaense have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain fifth position with 8-6 record. Ovarense at the other side keeps the third place with four games lost. Sampaense are looking forward to face league's second-placed CAB Madeira in Funchal in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Ovarense will play at home against Vitoria SC in Guimaraes and is hoping to win this game.
LPB top team - Benfica (13-1) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat eighth ranked Lusitania (4-10) in Angra 70-61. The winners were led by the former international forward Carlos Andrade (197-78, college: Queens, NC) who scored that evening 22 points and 8 rebounds and LaceDarius Dunn supported him with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Even 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists by American center Marcel Momplasir (205-81, college: Rhode Island) did not help to save the game for Lusitania. Benfica have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 13-1 record. Lusitania at the other side keeps the eighth place with ten games lost. They share the position with Fisica. Benfica will play against Barcelos (#7) at home in the next round where they are favorite. Lusitania will play against Alges and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Vitoria SC maintains sixth position with 8-7 record. Galitos-Tley lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom place with 13 games lost. Vitoria SC will meet higher ranked Ovarense (#3) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Galitos-Tley will play against Fisica (#9) in Torres Vedras and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last game of round 16 Alges lost to Academica on the opponent's court 76-80.

Academica - Alges 80-76

Very expected game in Coimbra where 10th ranked Alges (2-12) were defeated by fourth ranked Academica (10-5) 80-76 on Saturday. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 30-18. But Alges won second period 20-11. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Academica won last quarter 21-18. Forward Joao Balseiro (192-87) fired 23 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) chipped in 18 points and 9 rebounds. American forward Jamarkus Holt (205, college: Delta St.) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds and guard Antonio Pires (185-86) added 10 points and 10 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Academica maintains fourth position with 10-5 record. Alges lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keep the tenth place with 12 games lost. Academica will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Alges will play against Lusitania (#8) in Angra and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Sixth ranked Vitoria SC (8-7) crushed at home 11th ranked Galitos-Tley (2-13) by 21 points 87-66, which is the biggest margin this round on Sunday night. The hosts trailed by 5 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 11-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 87-66. Vitoria SC looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Naturalized Cape Verdean guard Ivan Almeida (198-89, college: Stonehill) fired 20 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals for the winners. The former international swingman Jose Silva (194-89) chipped in 22 points. Four Vitoria SC players scored in double figures. American power forward Chris Barnes (205-88, college: Georgia) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds and his fellow American import guard Jeremy Bynum (190-88, college: Jacksonville St., agency: Interperformances) added 9 points and 6 rebounds respectively for lost side. Neuchatel inks Kevin Monteiro - 4 hours ago
Union Neuchatel Basket (LNA) agreed terms with 23-year old forward Kevin Monteiro (196-94) from BC Winterthur. In 12 LNA games he had 9.0ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.4apg and 1.0spg last season. He helped them to win the Supercup. Monteiro also played that season for Fribourg Olympic. But in two LNA games he did not score anything. The other team he played shortly was Academie Fribourg where in 5 LNA games he recorded 12.0ppg, 5.0rpg, 2.2apg and 2.0spg. Monteiro won Swiss LNA championship title in 2016.    [read more]

FC Porto (LPB) confirmed in their roster 23-year old point guard Pedro Bastos (186-94). He played there last season. Bastos managed to play in three leagues last year. In 41 LPB games he had 5.0ppg, 1.3rpg and 2.5apg. He helped them to win the Supercup and make to league final. Bastos also played 6 games in FIBA Europe Cup where he recorded 4.3ppg, 1.0rpg and 1.3apg. FC Porto (LPB) re-signed experienced 39-year old former international forward Miguel Miranda (205-78). He played there last season. Miranda managed to play in three leagues last year (!!!). In 40 LPB games he recorded 4.4ppg, 2.9rpg and 1.4apg. He helped them to win the Supercup and make to league final. Miranda also played 6 games in FIBA Europe Cup where he averaged 7.0ppg, 4.8rpg and 2.0apg.
