LPB Round 16: Vitoria SC defeats Galitos-Barreiro in the closest game of the week - Jan 23, 2017

The most exciting game of round 16 in the LPB took place in Guimaraes. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 5th ranked Galitos-Barreiro (11-5) to third ranked Vitoria SC (12-4) 83-80 on Saturday evening. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Victor Moses (201-89, college: Georgetown, KY) who helped to win the game recording 19 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) and international forward Joao Balseiro (192-87) who added 17 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side point guard Jacques Conceicao (187-89) responded with 29 points and 5 rebounds (on 13-of-15 shooting from the field). Vitoria SC have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Benfica. Galitos-Barreiro lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. They share it with Oliveirense. Vitoria SC is looking forward to face Oliveirense (#4) in Oliveira in the next round. Galitos-Barreiro will play at home against the league's leader FC Porto Ferpinta and is hoping to prove to their fans that they can break losing series.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked Benfica (12-4) against sixth ranked Illiabum (10-6) on Sunday night. Visiting Benfica was defeated by Illiabum in Ilhavo 85-71. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Benfica. The winners were led by American forward Rashad Bishop (198-88, college: Cincinnati, agency: Basket Management Solutions) who scored that evening 23 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists (made all of his seven free throws) and Augusto Sobrinho supported him with 15 points. Illiabum's coach Ricardo Vasconcelos allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even 14 points by international forward Joao Soares (202-90, agency: Interperformances) did not help to save the game for Benfica. Newly promoted Illiabum maintains sixth position with 10-6 record. Benfica at the other side keeps the second place with four games lost. They share the position with Vitoria SC. Illiabum will play against Lusitania (#10) in Angra in the next round. Benfica will play at home against Electrico FC (#9) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
LPB top team - FC Porto Ferpinta (13-3) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed eighth ranked CAB Madeira (7-9) 91-68. Nick Washburn fired 12 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. FC Porto Ferpinta's coach Moncho Lopez felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Diogo Gameiro produced 16 points and 9 assists for lost side. FC Porto Ferpinta have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 13-3 record. CAB Madeira lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with nine games lost. FC Porto Ferpinta will meet Galitos-Barreiro (#5) on the road in the next round. CAB Madeira will play against Ovarense and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 16: bottom-ranked Sampaense was destroyed by Ovarense on the opponent's court 88-67. Maia Basket unfortunately lost to Lusitania in a home game 82-89. Oliveirense rolled over Electrico FC on the road 77-56.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 37 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 10 assists by Nick Novak of Ovarense.

Illiabum - Benfica 85-71

Ovarense - Sampaense 88-67

Very expected game when 12th ranked Sampaense (1-15) was crushed on the road by seventh ranked Ovarense (8-8) 88-67 on Saturday. American point guard Nick Novak (182-90, college: Pitt-Johnstown, agency: Dynamics Global Management) fired a double-double by scoring 37 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 10 assists for the winners. Austrian-American forward Bryce Douvier (201-91, college: Texas A&M-CC) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ovarense's coach Nuno Manarte felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Rui Nery (195-96) produced 18 points and 5 rebounds and Serbian center Dusan Ognjenovic (216-91, agency: Dynamics Global Management) added 10 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. Ovarense maintains seventh position with 8-8 record. Sampaense lost seventh consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom place with 15 games lost. Ovarense will meet CAB Madeira (#8) in the next round. Sampaense will play against Maia Basket (#11) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Maia Basket - Lusitania 82-89

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both tenth ranked Lusitania and 11th ranked Maia Basket had identical 3-12 record. But Maia Basket was not able to use a home court advantage and lost to the opponent from Angra 89-82 on Saturday night. American center Chris Matagrano (206-90, college: New Hampshire) fired 38 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds for the winners. Serbian guard Filip Simic (185-90, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 18 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. The former international forward Nuno Marcal (205-75) produced 20 points and 9 rebounds and point guard Pedro Catarino (184-90) added 20 points respectively for lost side. Five Maia Basket players scored in double figures. Lusitania (4-12) moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Electrico FC. Loser Maia Basket keeps the eleventh position with 13 games lost. Lusitania will meet at home higher ranked Illiabum (#6) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Maia Basket will play against Sampaense (#12) in Coimbra and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

LPB top team - FC Porto Ferpinta (13-3) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed eighth ranked CAB Madeira (7-9) 91-68. FC Porto Ferpinta dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to CAB Madeira's 32. FC Porto Ferpinta forced 21 CAB Madeira turnovers and outrebounded them 37-21 including 24 on the defensive glass. FC Porto Ferpinta looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American center Nick Washburn (208-91, college: Hillsdale, agency: Duran International) fired 12 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Point guard Andre Bessa (179-89) chipped in 12 points. Washburn is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. FC Porto Ferpinta's coach Moncho Lopez felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward James Ellisor (195-90, college: Bemidji St.) fired 17 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. The other American import swingman Carlos Morris (196-92, college: Minnesota, agency: AproK Sports Group) chipped in 16 points. Four Oliveirense players scored in double figures. Coach Ricardo Rodrigues's team controlled all game and the coach could let to play all 12 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Swingman Joao Lanzinha (191-89) produced 12 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals and Cape Verdean forward Kevin Coronel (197-91) added 8 points and 15 rebounds respectively for lost side. Oliveirense have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 11-5 record, which they share with Galitos-Barreiro.
