Here is the weekly review of the top performing Portuguese players, who play currently abroad.


Joao Gomes

   #1. This week's number one is an international shooting guard Joao Gomes (201-85, currently plays in Italy). He could not help Dolomiti En. TR (12-10) in their last game. Despite Gomes' very good performance Dolomiti En. TR lost 67-76 on the road to the lower-ranked (#7) Auxilium TO. He was the top scorer with 15 points. Gomes also added 4 rebounds in 28 minutes on the court. It was Dolomiti En. TR's first loss after six consecutive victories. It's Gomes' first season with the team. This year he averages: 8.5ppg, 5.1rpg, 2FGP: 35.4%, 3FGP: 33.9% and FT: 79.4% in 22 games he played so far. Gomes has a dual citizenship: Cape Verdean and Portuguese. Ex-Barreirense player is currently a member of the Portuguese senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to former U20 international point guard Miguel Cardoso (188-93, currently plays in Germany). He led Karlsruhe SC to a victory over the 14th-ranked Heidelberg USC (6-16) 81-68 in the German Regionalliga (fourth division) on Saturday night. Cardoso was MVP of the game. He scored 21 points, had 8 rebounds and dished 8 assists. KIT SC Karlsruhe (16-7) is placed second in South-West group. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Cardoso has relatively good stats this season: 15.0ppg, 4.9rpg, 9.0apg, 1.7spg, 2FGP: 57.3%(51-89), 3FGP: 32.4% and FT: 88.1%. He played for the Portuguese U20 national team in 2013.

Jose Miranda

   #3. The Portuguese player who performed third best last week abroad was former U18 international small forward Jose Miranda (189-94, currently plays in Spain). Miranda was not able to help Santfeliuenc in their game against JAC Sants (8-12) in the Spanish EBA (fourth division). He scored 5 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. The 14th-placed Santfeliuenc (7-13) was defeated 78-74 at home by the higher-ranked JAC Sants (#9) in the Group C-A. It was Santfeliuenc's sixth consecutive loss in a row. Miranda's overall stats this season are: 4.0ppg, 5.0rpg. He played for the Portuguese U18 national team five years ago.

   #4. Small forward Henrique Onofre (189-94, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for Martorell (14-6) in their game against Calvia (15-5) in the Spanish EBA (fourth division). Onofre scored only 4 points. Martorell (#2) was defeated 84-80 on the opponent's court by the leading Calvia in the Group C-A. Onofre's overall stats this season are: 8.8ppg, 3.5rpg and 1.1apg. He used to play for the Portuguese U20 national team back in 2014.


The list of other players, who all have Portuguese passport but never been selected to any of Portuguese national teams:

   #1. Ivan Almeida (198-SF-89, college: Stonehill, currently plays in France). He could not help Cholet Basket (8-15) to beat Paris-Levallois (14-9). Almeida scored 8 points. Cholet Basket was edged 75-74 on the road by the much higher-ranked Paris-Levallois (#5). Almeida's overall stats this season are: 5.5ppg, 4.3rpg and 2.0apg. He has a dual citizenship: Cape Verdean and Portuguese.

   #2. Fernando Raposo Laurencio (206-C/F-89, currently plays in France) managed to help BCM Gravelines Dunkerque Grand Littoral in a victory against one of league's weakest teams Entente Orleans 45 (6-17) 67-59 in the French ProA on Saturday night. Raposo Laurencio recorded only 2 points in 14 minutes. BCM Gravelines Dunkerque Grand Littoral (12-10) is placed seventh in the ProA. This year Raposo Laurencio's overall stats are: 3.2ppg and 4.4rpg in 13 games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Portuguese and French.

   #3. Kevin Monteiro (196-F-94, currently plays in Switzerland) was not able to help Winterthur (0-2) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Monteiro's good performance Winterthur was badly defeated 75-59 at home by the lower-ranked Neuchatel (#5). He recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 12 rebounds. Monteiro's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Monteiro's overall stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 5.9rpg, 1.6apg and 1.1spg. He has both Portuguese and Swiss nationalities.

   #4. Venelin Hristov (198-G/F-95, currently plays in Bulgaria) was not able to secure a victory for Cherno More (5-14) in their game against Lukoil Academic Sofia (17-3) in the Bulgarian NBL. Hristov scored only 4 points in 18 minutes. Cherno More was crushed 107-60 on their home court in Varna by the leading Lukoil Academic Sofia. It was Cherno More's fourth consecutive loss in a row. Hristov has been at the team for five years. This season his overall stats are: 5.0ppg, 2.2rpg and 1.4apg in 15 games. Hristov also holds two passports: Portuguese and Bulgarian.

   #5. Experienced Robert Fultz (191-PG-82, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Italy) contributed to Roseto's victory against the eighth-ranked Mantova (13-11) 88-81 in the Italian Serie A2 (second division) in Sunday night's game. Fultz scored only 4 points and added 5 passes in 28 minutes. Mec-Energy Roseto (14-10) is placed sixth in East group. This year Fultz's overall stats are: 8.3ppg, 3.0rpg and 4.4apg in 22 games. He has dual citizenship: Portuguese and Italian.

   #6. Daniel Relvao (206-F, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the George Mason in their game against the Virginia Commonwealth University in the NCAA. Relvao recorded only 4 points. His team was defeated 71-60. Relvao's overall stats this season are: 0.8ppg and 1.6rpg.

   #7. Joel Almeida (195-F-85, college: Brockport St., currently plays in Spain) contributed to a CB Granada's victory against the league outsider Zamorano 84-79 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) on Saturday night. He scored 6 points in 17 minutes. This year Almeida's overall stats are: 8.5ppg and 3.8rpg in 25 games. He has Cape Verdean and Portuguese nationalities.

   #8. Arnaldinho Filho (187-G-78, currently plays in Brazil) couldn't help Botafogo F.R. (3-1) in their last game. Despite Filho's very good performance the league leader Botafogo F.R. lost 78-82 to the second-ranked Contagem. He was the second best scorer with 17 points in 29 minutes. This year Filho has relatively solid stats: 14.0ppg and 2.0rpg in four games. He holds both Portuguese and Brazilian passports.

Vitoria SC - FC Porto 70-95 FC Porto cruised past Vitoria SC on the road to sweep the semifinal series. The game was mostly controlled by FC Porto Ferpinta. Vitoria SC managed to win fourth quarter 21-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. FC Porto Ferpinta dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Vitoria SC's 26. Barreirense - Terceira 56-60 Terceira celebrate Proliga title. They upset Barreirense on the road to sweep the championship series. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Barreirense won third quarter 11-10. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Terceira take advantage of home court in first game of final series of Proliga and grab first win. Next game will be played on 26th of May. Terceira - Barreirense 63-56 Naturalized Sao Tome and Principe center Ekjersey Viana (203-77) stepped up and scored 12 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and guard Luis-Felipe Tomassi (175-92) chipped in 16 points.
