Stoenescu confident of Eurobasket Women place - Jul 28, 2010

Romania veteran Ancuta Stoenescu (171-G-80, agency: Data Plus Group) is confident the team can navigate one of the toughest groups in EuroBasket Women qualifying and book their ticket to Poland.

Gheorge Mandache's team have been drawn in Group B alongside Israel, Latvia and Serbia, which looks like the toughest group of all on paper, but Stoenescu is confident Romania have the beating of at least two of their opponents.

'It's true it's a tough group, but in my opinion, Serbia and Israel are not what they used to be,' she said. 'The generations have changed, but we still have our core of players and we have matured.

'I think Latvia is the only really difficult opponent, a team that did a great job of hosting the last EuroBasket. Let us not forget that two teams go through from the group, so I think we can reach our goal.'

Stoenescu is one of four players in Romania's squad to be veterans from the team that won bronze at the European Youth Championship in 2000, with Florina Pascalau, Andra Mandache and Cristina Ciocan the others.

The 30-year-old guard now believes it would be fitting for that group to take Romania back to the EuroBasket for what could be their final tourmanet together.

'Back then, nobody gave us a chance,' she said of the 2000 tournament. 'Now, it's almost the same, especially going up against Latvia. We, along with the younger players, want to prove our worth again and put Romania in with the elite.'
