The season is fast approaching in Romania and the regional qualifiers for the Romanian Cup signals the first official games of the season. No longer classified as preseason encounters or friendlies, the clubs in the top league in Romania take their Cup seriously. For the purpose of this article we'll focus on the regional being held in Dobresti, a suburb just outside of the Country's capital city of Bucharest. The pairings in this regional have some intrigue as 4 clubs face off in 3 games in 3 nights. U Mobitelco, CSM, Dinamo, and Giurgiu all will have their first chance this year to show what their clubs have.

The first night's match up of U Mobitelco and Dinamo is a game between two clubs with a long and storied tradition. Dinamo along with Steaua both of Bucharest took turns winning titles year after year for some three decades from the 50's to 80's. Dinamo added 3 more titles in the 90s and last took the top honor in the 2002-2003 Season. Coincidentally, the 2nd division championship round played out some 17 months ago featured Dinamo, who had fallen on difficult times in the win-loss column the year prior, and Giurgiu, a team that had never played in the first division. The two clubs both joined the 1st division last season as a result. This season Dinamo has decided to begin the season without imports as they attempt to build their base of Local and National younger talent. U Mobitelco (Cluj) on the other hand is stocked with experience. The 2010-2011 Romanian Champion is considered by many around the league to be a club that could compete for another championship this season. Although they did not bring back two key performers from their team last season, Dykes and Krystonovic, they are reloaded with one of the stronger rosters on paper going into the season. Sean Barnette (198-F-86, college: Wingate) has led the team in scoring during the preseason and the strong and athletic 3 man will a difficult guy to contend with for Dinamo.

The late game features CSM and Giurgiu. As noted above, Giurgiu is just now entering it's second season in the top league, while CSM has firmly supplanted Dinamo as the power from the capital city. CSM returns much of the same roster from the best season in franchise history last year and is looked at as a club that could vie for hardware this season and a deep playoff run. Pupovic, the Serbian big man who played in Ukraine last season with CSM teammate Bosnjak has taken the spot in the starting line-up formerly occupied by American Bryson McKenzie. Much of the other key roles are the same of a very good club of a year ago with Martinic and Gallimore leading the way. Giurgiu, on the other hand, had a complete overhaul in the off-season only returning Brian Burrell (192-G-84, agency: TSS Management, college: UTPA) from the list of imports from last season. It's early and really anything can happen, but this is a good early season test for all clubs involved at this regional and will go a long way towards beginning to determine who will establish themselves this season as a top contender. The winner of the bracket will advance along with possibly a 2nd club to be determined by other qualifiers and results. Saturday's games will be Giurgiu and Cluj while the two teams from Bucharest face each other CSM and Dinamo. Sunday CSM and Cluj Mobitelco play while the two teams that joined the top division a year ago play again on the final day of the qualifier, Giurgiu and Dinamo. Results will be covered here with all the other news of the day.

Liga Nationala Round 7 (Second Stage): Steaua CSM lose to CSU Sibiu in the game between Top 4 teams - 1 day ago
The game between Top Four teams took place in Sibiu. Third ranked host CSU Sibiu (16-9) smashed their biggest opponent Steaua CSM (15-10) 76-55. It was a key game for the second position in Nationala. The game was mostly controlled by CSU Sibiu. Steaua CSM managed to win third quarter 13-11. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. It was a great evening for Serbian point guard Igor Mijajlovic (192-8...   [read more]
