Liga Nationala Round 17: No surprise as #1 ICIM Arad defeats Alexandria - Jan 19, 2013

Liga Nationala top team - ICIM Arad (15-1) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed sixth ranked Alexandria (9-7) 82-55. The game was mostly controlled by ICIM Arad. Alexandria managed to win third quarter 19-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Alexandria to just 7 points in second quarter. ICIM Arad dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Alexandria's 20 and made 18-of-22 free shots (81.8 percent) during the game. American center Kari Laplante (195-89, college: USC) stepped up and scored 23 points and 8 rebounds for the winners and her fellow American import forward Chrissy Givens (180-85, college: Middle Tenn.St.) chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds. American guard Chelsea Lyons (175, college: Wisc.-Green Bay) responded with 15 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. ICIM Arad have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 15-1 record. Alexandria at the other side dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. ICIM Arad are looking forward to face Cluj Napoca (#13) on the road in the next round which should be another easy win for them. Alexandria will play against Brasov (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Bottom-ranked Oradea (0-15) is still winless. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 15th consecutive match to thirteenth ranked Rapid (4-12) 87-60. The former international guard Florina Diaconu (170-82) nailed 23 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists and 7 steals for the winning side and Claudia Ene accounted for 17 points and 5 rebounds. Rapid's coach Dan Militaru felt very confident using 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ruxandra Chis (176-93) came up with a double-double by scoring 15 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for Oradea in the defeat. Rapid moved-up to twelfth place. Oradea lost their fourteenth game in a row. They still closes the standings with 15 games lost. Rapid will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Oradea will play on the road against Sf.Gheorghe (#5) in Sfantu Gheorghe and hopes to get finally their first victory.
Third ranked Satu Mare (13-3) crushed at home 12th ranked Cluj Napoca (3-12) by 46 points 95-49, which is the biggest margin this round on Saturday night. The best player for the winners was Shanika Freeman who had a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds. Georgia Jones produced 14 points for the guests. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Satu Mare maintains third place with 13-3 record having just two points less than leader ICIM Arad. Cluj Napoca lost their fifth game in a row. They dropped to the thirteenth position with 12 games lost. Satu Mare will meet Targu Mures (#11) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Cluj Napoca will play against the league's leader ICIM Arad and hope to secure a win.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 17: Alba Iulia won against Sp.Studentesc on the opponent's court 73-60. Targoviste outscored Targu Mures in a home game 80-43. Sf.Gheorghe managed to beat Brasov on the road 81-76. Timisoara defeated Craiova on its own court 71-62.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 18 points and 14 rebounds by Jillian Robbins of Targoviste.


Sp.Studentesc - Alba Iulia 60-73

Very expected game in Bucuresti where 10th ranked Sp.Studentesc (7-9) was defeated by fourth ranked Alba Iulia (12-4) 73-60 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 7-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 73-60. Alba Iulia made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. They also forced 19 Sp.Studentesc turnovers. The best player for the winners was Russian-Israeli forward Ekaterina Abramzon (185-87) who scored 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. American forward Rebecca Tobin (195-88, college: Arizona St.) chipped in 22 points and 5 rebounds. Bosnian center Emina Demirovic (186-85) produced 16 points and 6 rebounds and Serbian center Vladinka Erak (190-84) added 11 points and 11 rebounds respectively for the hosts. The victory was the eighth consecutive win for Alba Iulia. They maintain fourth place with 12-4 record. Loser Sp.Studentesc dropped to the eighth position with nine games lost. They share it with Craiova and Brasov. Alba Iulia will meet at home league's second-placed CSM Targoviste in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Sp.Studentesc will play against Craiova (#8) in Craiova and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

They dominated on the defensive end, holding Targu Mures to just 7 points in fourth quarter. CSM Targoviste dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Targu Mures' 24. CSM Targoviste forced 23 Targu Mures turnovers and outrebounded them 52-26 including a 21-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. Americans were the main players on the court.
