Liga Nationala Round 18: Oradea still unable to win any game - Jan 24, 2013

Bottom-ranked Oradea (0-16) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 103-60 loss to fifth ranked Sf.Gheorghe (12-5) in Sfantu Gheorghe on Wednesday evening. The game without a history. Sf.Gheorghe led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 78 of its points in the paint compared to Oradea's 26. Sf.Gheorghe forced 24 Oradea turnovers and outrebounded them 59-16 including a 26-0 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 33 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Oradea's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Sf.Gheorghe made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was American power forward Mekia Valentine (193-88, college: UCSB, agency: Merit Sports) who had a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!), 15 rebounds and 5 blocks (on 15-of-19 shooting from the field). Hungarian center Judit Kajdacsi (192-79, agency: Laszlo Vinko Group) chipped in 10 points and 17 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Alexandra Vlaicu (178-91) who recorded 18 points and 5 assists. Sf.Gheorghe maintains fifth position with 12-5 record. Oradea at the other side still closes the standings with 16 games lost. Sf.Gheorghe will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Oradea will play at home against Alexandria (#6) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

It was a good game for American forward Utahya Drye (185-88, college: Virginia Tech) who led her team to a victory with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Florentina Ardeleanu contributed with 17 points, 6 assists and 4 steals for the winners. American power forward Chantel Hilliard (187-90, college: Auburn) replied with 13 points and 9 rebounds for Targu Mures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Satu Mare maintains third position with 14-3 record behind leader ICIM Arad. Targu Mures lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the eleventh place with 12 games lost. Satu Mare will play against Alba Iulia (#4) at home in the next round. Targu Mures will play against the league's leader ICIM Arad (#1) and hope to get back on the winning track.

In the last two games of round 18 Brasov was crushed by Alexandria in a road game 84-53. Craiova was beaten by Sp.Studentesc at home 53-65.

Alexandria - Brasov 84-53

There was no surprise when 9th ranked Brasov (7-10) was crushed on the road by seventh ranked Alexandria (10-7) 84-53. The game was mostly controlled by Alexandria. Brasov was better in third quarter 20-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Alexandria dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Brasov's 34. Alexandria forced 22 Brasov turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists comparing to just 6 passes made by Brasov's players. It was a good game for the former international power forward Anca Sipos (185-85) who led her team to a victory with 22 points and 4 assists. The former international forward Georgiana Rus (189-87) contributed with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for the winners. Four Alexandria players scored in double figures. American guard Brandie Hoskins (175-85) replied with 16 points and point guard Gabriela Cursaru (169-92) added 7 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Brasov. Brasov's coach Daniel Calancea gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Alexandria moved-up to sixth place. Brasov at the other side keeps the ninth position with ten games lost. They share it with Craiova. Alexandria will play against Oradea (#14) in Oradea in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Brasov will play at home against Cluj Napoca (#13) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Targu Mures - Satu Mare 42-90

The game with biggest result difference took place in Targu Mures. Local Targu Mures (5-12) were outscored by third ranked Satu Mare (14-3) 90-42. The game was mostly controlled by Satu Mare. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Targu Mures to just 6 points in fourth quarter and to 13 points in second half. Satu Mare dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Targu Mures' 28. Satu Mare forced 27 Targu Mures turnovers and outrebounded them 44-31 including 20 on the offensive glass. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 27 assists comparing to just 7 passes made by Targu Mures' players. It was a good game for American forward Utahya Drye (185-88, college: Virginia Tech) who led her team to a victory with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Craiova - Sp.Studentesc 53-65

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both tenth ranked Sp.Studentesc and 8th ranked Craiova had identical 7-9 record. But Craiova was not able to use a home court advantage and lost to the opponent from Bucuresti 65-53. The game was mostly controlled by Sp.Studentesc. Craiova was better in second period 17-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Craiova 43-27 including a 32-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a good game for Serbian guard Tamara Bajic (172-87) who led her team to a victory with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). Bosnian center Emina Demirovic (186-85) contributed with 7 points and 16 rebounds for the winners. Swingman Irina Bors (178-88) replied with 21 points and Serbian center Zorica Mitov (189-87) added 8 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Craiova. Sp.Studentesc (8-9) moved-up to eighth place. Craiova lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the ninth position with ten games lost. They share it with Brasov. Sp.Studentesc will play against league's second-placed CSM Targoviste on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Craiova will have a break next round.
