American Mekia Valentine (193-F/C-88, agency: Merit Sports) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Sf.Gheorghe and that's her to receive a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 18. The 24-year old power forward had a double-double of 34 points and fifteen rebounds, while her team outclassed, the league's bottom-ranked team Oradea (#14, 0-16) with 43-point margin 103-60. Sf.Gheorghe maintains the 5th position in Romanian Liga Nationala. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Sf.Gheorghe will need more victories to improve their 12-5 record. Valentine turned to be Sf.Gheorghe's top player in her first season with the team. Univ. of California-Santa Barbara graduate has very impressive stats this year. Valentine is in league's top in rebounds (5th best: 9.3rpg) and averages solid 1.6bpg and 56.7% FGP.
The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 27-year old former international power forward Anca Sipos (185-F/C-85) of Alexandria. Sipos impressed basketball fans with 22 points and 4 assists. Of course she lead Alexandria to another comfortable win outscoring the lower-ranked Brasov (#10, 7-10) 84-53. This victory allowed Alexandria to move up to 6th position in the standings. Her team lost some distance to top teams. But 10-7 record is not bad and everything may still change. Sipos is a newcomer at Alexandria and despite he is not a team leader yet, every game he becomes more reliable player. Hopefully performances like the last one will happen more often.
The third best performed player last round was American Shanika Freeman (186-F/C-83) of Satu Mare (#3). Freeman scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. She was a key player of Satu Mare, leading her team to a 90-42 easy win against the lower-ranked Targu Mures (#11, 5-12). Satu Mare is closer and closer to the top of the standings. They will still need more victories. But 14-3 record is not that bad... Freeman has a very solid season. In 17 games in Romania she scored 13.1ppg. She also has 6.7rpg and FGP: 61.4%.
Other top performing players last week: 4. Tamara Bajic (172-G-87) of Sp.Studentesc - 23 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists 5. Chelsea Lyons (175-G) of Alexandria - 20 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists 6. Judit Kajdacsi (192-C-79) of Sf.Gheorghe - 10 points, 17 rebounds and 2 assists 7. Utahya Drye (185-F-88) of Satu Mare - 13 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists 8. Georgiana Rus (189-F-87) of Alexandria - 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists 9. Florentina Ardeleanu (171-G-83) of Satu Mare - 17 points and 6 assists 10. Jasmin Bailey (172-G/F-90) of Sf.Gheorghe - 9 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists
The Player of the week is choosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3*(REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4*(2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3*(2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3*(3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)
