Liga Nationala Round 17: No surprise as #1 UBT Cluj Napoca defeat Olimpic - Jan 23, 2017

The round 17 was rather boring as all games ended with very predictable results.

Liga Nationala top team - UBT Cluj Napoca (13-2) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed eleventh ranked Olimpic (1-15) in Baia Mare 91-62. The game without a history. UBT Cluj Napoca led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Olimpic's 36. They outrebounded Olimpic 31-19 including a 25-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. UBT Cluj Napoca looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The former international Vlad Moldoveanu (206-88, college: American) stepped up and scored 16 points and 5 rebounds for the winners and American Kyndall Dykes (192-87, college: New Orleans) chipped in 14 points and 5 assists. UBT Cluj Napoca's coach Mihai Silvasan felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Serbian center Marko Pavlovic (210-86) responded with 16 points and 5 rebounds. UBT Cluj Napoca have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 13-2 record. Olimpic lost twelfth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with 15 games lost. UBT Cluj Napoca are looking forward to face league's second-placed Steaua CSM in Bucuresti in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Olimpic will play on the road against Targu Mures (#7) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that they can break losing series.
The game in Timisoara was also worth to mention about. 6th ranked Targu Mures (8-7) played at the court of seventh ranked BC Timisoara (9-7). BC Timisoara did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 91-72. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Targu Mures. Serbian guard Mladen Jeremic (198-88, agency: 011 Sports) nailed 22 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side and Jonte Flowers accounted for 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Montenegrin Goran Gajovic (199-88, agency: 011 Sports) came up with 18 points for Targu Mures in the defeat. BC Timisoara moved-up to sixth place. Targu Mures at the other side dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. BC Timisoara will play against Phoenix Galati (#8) on the road in the next round. Targu Mures will play against Olimpic and hope to get back on the winning track.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 17: Oradea won against Craiova on the opponent's court 87-82. CSU Sibiu outscored Dinamo B. in a home game 87-61. Phoenix Galati recorded a loss to Steaua CSM on the road 94-81.

BC Timisoara - Targu Mures 91-72

The game in Timisoara was also worth to mention about. 6th ranked Targu Mures (8-7) played at the court of seventh ranked BC Timisoara (9-7). BC Timisoara did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 91-72. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Targu Mures. The game was mostly controlled by BC Timisoara. Targu Mures was better in fourth quarter 24-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Targu Mures 43-30 including 17 on the offensive glass. BC Timisoara brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. Serbian guard Mladen Jeremic (198-88, agency: 011 Sports) nailed 22 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side and American swingman Jonte Flowers (196-85, college: Winona St.) accounted for 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Four BC Timisoara players scored in double figures. Craiova - Oradea 82-87

Very expected game when 9th ranked Craiova (4-11) was defeated at home by fifth ranked Oradea (10-6) 87-82. Craiova was ahead by 4 points after three quarters before a 24-20 charge of Oradea, which allowed them to win the game. They made 33-of-40 charity shots (82.5 percent) during the game, while Craiova only scored sixteen points from the stripe. Strangely Craiova outrebounded Oradea 46-28 including a 21-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. Craiova was plagued by 33 personal fouls down the stretch. American guard Martin Zeno (196-85, college: Texas Tech) nailed 17 points and 5 rebounds for the winning side and Canadian center Sean Denison (210-85, college: Santa Clara, agency: 011 Sports) accounted for 14 points and 10 rebounds. American swingman Jamar Abrams (201-89, college: E.Carolina, agency: Inception Sports) came up with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds and the other American import guard Tayloe Taylor (191-86, college: Livingstone) added 19 points and 8 assists respectively for Craiova in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Oradea have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending champion moved-up to third place, which they share with CSU Sibiu and Pitesti. Craiova lost third consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with 11 games lost. Oradea will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Craiova will play on the road against CS Dinamo Bucuresti (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

American power forward Chris Cooper (205-90, college: ODU) nailed a double-double by scoring 13 points and 16 rebounds for the winning side and swingman Radu Paliciuc (200-88) accounted for 15 points and 10 rebounds. Five CSU Sibiu players scored in double figures. Coach Dan Fleseriu's team controlled all game and the coach could let to play 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Steaua CSM's pressure prevailed and they won that period 24-14 extending their advantage to 13 points. They shot 62.1 percent from the field.
