Malcolm Armstead selected the top Romanian playing abroad in last week's games - Apr 1, 2017

  follow us on Facebook Twitter

We bring you last week's top performances from Romanians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

Malcolm Armstead
Malcolm Armstead
#1. This week's number one is an international point guard Malcolm Armstead (187-89, agency: Three Eye Sports, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Turkey). He could not help Yesilgiresun Bld (9-14) in their last game. Despite Armstead's good performance Yesilgiresun Bld lost 76-84 on the road to the second-ranked Anadolu Efes. He scored 10 points and added 3 assists in 34 minutes on the court. Armstead has relatively good stats this year: 12.9ppg, 2.8rpg, 5.3apg, 1.8spg, 2FGP: 47.1%, 3FGP: 29.6% and FT: 73.8% in 23 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Armstead is currently a member of the Romanian senior national team. Strangely he has never played in Romania.

Alexandru Olah
Alexandru Olah
#2. Second place goes to an international center Alexandru Olah (213-93, college: Northwestern, currently plays in Belgium). Olah was not able to help Belfius Mons-Hainaut in their game against Limburg United (13-13) in the Belgian Euromillions League. He scored 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Belfius Mons-Hainaut was defeated 72-59 in Limburg by the higher-ranked United (#6). It's Olah's first season with the team. This year Olah has relatively solid stats: 10.6ppg, 5.0rpg, 1.2apg, 2FGP: 49.2%, 3FGP: 29.2% and FT: 82.9%. He is in the roster of the Romanian senior national team.

Emanuel Cate
Emanuel Cate
#3. The Romanian player who performed third best last week abroad was U20 international center Emanuel Cate (206-97, currently plays in Spain). Cate was not able to secure a victory for Sevilla (8-16) in their game against Joventut (8-17) in the Spanish Liga Endesa. It was not his best game last Sunday. Cate scored only 2 points in 9 minutes on the court. Sevilla lost 57-71 at home to the lower-ranked (#14) Joventut. This year Cate's overall stats are: 1.9ppg, 2.1rpg, 2FGP: 47.6% and FT: 71.4% in 13 games. He is also a member of the Romanian U20 national team.

Rares Uta
Rares Uta
#4. Power forward Rares Uta (211-97, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help CB Granada (18-9) in their game against Meridiano Alicante (18-9) in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division). Uta scored 6 points. CB Granada was edged 82-81 in Alicante by the lower-ranked Meridiano (#4). There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This season Uta averages: 6.3ppg and 4.6rpg. He used to play for the Romanian U18 national team back in 2015.

The list of other players, who all have Romanian passport but never been selected to any of Romanian national teams:

#1. Victor Osmatescu (201-C-96, currently plays in Italy). Osmatescu could not help Scauri (11-14) to beat Cefalu (12-13). He scored only 4 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. The 11th-placed Scauri (11-14) was defeated 68-61 on the road by the higher-ranked Cefalu (#9) in the Group C. It was Scauri's third consecutive loss in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This season Osmatescu averages: 6.3ppg and 4.4rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Romanian and Italian.

#2. Experienced Alexei Andrus (195-G/F-79, currently plays in Germany) was not able to help Zwickau (7-17) in their last game. Despite Andrus' very good performance the 12th-placed Zwickau (7-17) was crushed 119-91 on the opponent's court by the second-ranked Vilsbiburg in the South-East group. He scored 18 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 28 minutes. It was Zwickau's fifth consecutive loss in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Andrus is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Zwickau's roster. Andrus has reliable stats this season: 13.0ppg, 4.4rpg and 2.2apg in 24 games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Romanian and Moldovan.

#3. Jonhatan Nir (204-F-86, currently plays in Israel) managed to help Hapoel Ramat Gan Givataim in a victory against one of league's weakest teams Hasharon (5-20) 82-72 in the Israeli National League (second division) in Tuesday night's game. Nir recorded only 3 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. Hapoel Ramat Gan Givataim (16-9) is placed third in the National League. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. Nir has reliable stats this year: 11.0ppg, 5.2rpg and 1.4apg in 21 games. He has both Romanian and Israeli nationalities.

#4. Yaniv Solomon (201-SF-94, currently plays in Israel) is a teammate of previously mentioned Jonhatan Nir and both played together in the last Israeli National League game. Solomon was the major contributor in a Hapoel Ramat Gan Givataim's victory against one of league's weakest teams Hasharon (5-20) 82-72. He recorded 23 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Solomon has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 19.4ppg, 6.8rpg, 1.8apg and 1.5spg. Solomon also holds two passports: Israeli and Romanian. Despite his Romanian nationality, Solomon previously played for the Israeli U18 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Romanian team.

Other top Romanian players, who play abroad:

Robert-gratian Neculaes (203-F/C) plays for Lliria in Spanish EBA
Alexandru Darii plays for BBC Nitia in Luxembourg N2
