It's still too early stage of the Regular Season in Superlaegue, but even now we can clearly see the differece between stronger teams and outsiders. The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with change at the leadership position and favorites losing the games.

Round 5 in Superlaegue means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Saransk where host Ruskon-Mordovia (3-2) edged league's leader Universitet-Yugra (4-1) 84-82 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Universitet-Yugra. The hosts trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 26-18 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Ruskon-Mordovia shot the lights out from three sinking 15 long-distance shots on high 57.7 percentage. The best player for the winners was guard Fedor Klyuchnikov (192-90) who scored 20 points and 5 assists. Forward Roman Semerninov (200-81) chipped in 18 points. The former international forward Vladimir Dyachok (204-80) produced 22 points and 4 steals (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the guests. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Ruskon-Mordovia moved-up to fifth place, which they share with TEMP-SUMZ and Severstal. Universitet-Yugra at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. They share it with Ataman. They were replaced at the leadership position by Ataman. Universitet-Yugra will play next round against league's leader Ataman trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Ruskon-Mordovia will try to continue on its current victory against fourteenth ranked Volgograd on the road.
Undefeated Ataman (4-1) recorded its first loss in Rostov. Hosts were defeated by fourteenth ranked Sojuz Zaretchny (2-3) 102-97. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Ataman. Point guard Sergei Chudinovskich (193-81) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Aleksander Pushkin contributed with 37 points (!!!) for the winners. Canadian power forward Sean Denison (211-85, college: Santa Clara, agency: Interperformances) answered with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds for Ataman. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Sojuz Zaretchny moved-up to ninth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Ataman at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. They share it with Univ.Surgut. Sojuz Zaretchny will play against Rjazan (#10) on the road in the next round. Ataman will play against the league's second-placed Universitet-Yugra (#2) and will have a slim chance for a victory.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Ural Ekaterinburg (3-1) against tenth ranked Novosybirsk (2-2) on Friday night. Visiting Ural Ekaterinburg was edged by Novosybirsk in a tough game in Novosybirsk 88-89. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Ural Ekaterinburg. Pavel Podkolzin stepped up with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 14 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) for the winners. Chris Monroe responded with 26 points and 5 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Novosybirsk moved-up to eighth place. Loser Ural Ekaterinburg keeps the third position with one game lost. They share it with Planeta-Univ.. Novosybirsk will meet at home higher ranked Planeta-Univ. (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ural Ekaterinburg will play against AltajBasket in Barnau and hope to secure a win.
The game in Revda supposed to be also worth to mention about. 5th ranked Rjazan (2-3) played at the court of seventh ranked TEMP-SUMZ Revda (3-2). TEMP-SUMZ Revda smashed Rjazan 86-63. Aleksey Tsvetkov nailed 13 points and 7 rebounds (perfect from the field making all six shots) for the winning side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. TEMP-SUMZ Revda moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Severstal and Ruskon-Mord. Rjazan at the other side dropped to the ninth position with three games lost. TEMP-SUMZ Revda will have a break next round. Rjazan will play at home against Sojuz Zaretchny (#11) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The best player for the winners was Stanislav Zinchenko who scored 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Severstal's coach Sergei Mokin felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Severstal moved-up to fifth place, which they share with TEMP-SUMZ and Ruskon-Mord. Loser Volgograd dropped to the fourteenth position with four games lost. Severstal will face Dynamo Moscow (#12) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Volgograd will play against Ruskon-Mordovia in Saransk.

In the last two games of round 5 Dynamo MO was defeated by AltajBasket in Barnau 81-65. Planeta-Univ. beat Avtodor at home 80-75.

Severstal - Volgograd 77-51

The game with biggest result difference took place in Cherepovec. Local Severstal (3-2) outscored 11th ranked Volgograd (1-4) 77-51 on Saturday night. The game without a history. Severstal led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Volgograd to just 7 points in second quarter. They outrebounded Volgograd 39-25 including 26 on the offensive glass. Volgograd was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was forward Stanislav Zinchenko (203-87) who scored 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Sergei Zakharov (194-86) chipped in 20 points. Severstal's coach Sergei Mokin felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Guard Alexei Marchenko (191-87) produced 14 points and 7 rebounds and guard Artem Komissarov (200-90) added 12 points respectively for the guests. Severstal moved-up to fifth place, which they share with TEMP-SUMZ and Ruskon-Mord. Loser Volgograd dropped to the fourteenth position with four games lost. There was a minor upset in Barnau where higher ranked Dynamo Moscow (2-3) was defeated by twelfth ranked AltajBasket (2-3) 81-65 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by AltajBasket. Dynamo Moscow was better in fourth quarter 18-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. AltajBasket forced 19 Dynamo Moscow turnovers. Dynamo Moscow was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was guard Sergey Chernov (187-86) who scored 27 points and 9 assists. Center Sergey Varlamov (209-84) chipped in 6 points and 12 rebounds. Forward Vladimir Belov (207-84) produced 15 points and forward Evgeny Karpeko (204-89) added 9 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the guests. Very important is a road loss of third ranked Ural Ekaterinburg (3-1) against tenth ranked Novosybirsk (2-2) on Friday night. Visiting Ural Ekaterinburg was edged by Novosybirsk in a tough game in Novosybirsk 88-89. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Ural Ekaterinburg. Ural Ekaterinburg was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 5-point lead after three quarters before a 29-23 charge of Novosybirsk, which allowed them to win the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Center Pavel Podkolzin (226-85) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 14 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) for the winners and swingman Pavel Zakamov (192-80, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) chipped in 16 points and 5 assists. American guard Chris Monroe (191-81, college: G.Washington) responded with 26 points and 5 assists and guard Anton Glazunov (182-86) scored 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Novosybirsk moved-up to eighth place. Loser Ural Ekaterinburg keeps the third position with one game lost. They share it with Planeta-Univ.. Novosybirsk will meet at home higher ranked Planeta-Univ. (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ural Ekaterinburg will play against AltajBasket in Barnau and hope to secure a win.

No shocking result in a game in Ukhta where fourth ranked Planeta-Univ. (3-1) defeated 11th ranked Avtodor (1-3) 80-75 on Friday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Planeta-Univ. made 26-of-30 free shots (86.7 percent) during the game. Planeta-Univ. outrebounded Avtodor 44-31 including 28 on the offensive glass. Avtodor was plagued by 31 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was Vladislav Grushevskiy who had a double-double by scoring 25 points and 11 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!). Power forward Aleksandr Zaykin (208-84) chipped in a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds. Four Planeta-Univ. players scored in double figures. point guard Andrey Mateyunas (180-88) produced 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and power forward Sergey Toropov (206-89) added 11 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Planeta-Univ. moved-up to third place, which they share with Ural Ekaterinb. Avtodor lost third consecutive game. Avtodor at the other side, also newcomer in the league, dropped to the thirteenth position with three games lost. Planeta-Univ. will face Novosybirsk (#8) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Avtodor will play against Spartak Vidnoye (#15) in Moscow and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
