The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Ataman (7-2) in Rostov on Friday night. Hosts were defeated by fifth ranked AltajBasket (6-3) 63-54. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Ataman. The guests trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 63-54. AltajBasket dominated on the defensive end, holding Ataman to just 7 points in third quarter. They held Ataman to an opponent 23.6 percent shooting from the field compared to 35.2 percent accuracy of the winners. Forward Alexander Lunev (201-80, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) stepped up and scored 18 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and guard Sergey Chernov (187-86) chipped in 13 points and 5 assists. The best for the losing side was guard Dmitriy Zagnoyko (192-85) with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. AltajBasket have an impressive series of five victories in a row. Newly promoted AltajBasket maintains fifth place with 6-3 record, which they share with Ruskon-Mord. Ataman at the other side still keeps top position with two games lost. AltajBasket is looking forward to face Rjazan (#7) at home in the next round. Ataman will play against Severstal (#12) in Cherepovec and is hoping to win this game.
Bottom-ranked Spartak Vidnoye (0-8) is still winless. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their eighth consecutive match to fourth ranked Ural Ekaterinburg (6-2) 85-70. Forward Dmitri Nikolaev (200-83) nailed 14 points and 8 rebounds for the winning side and Alimdzhan Fedyushin accounted for 20 points. Forward Vladislav Trushkin (201-93) came up with 14 points and 5 rebounds for Spartak Vidnoye in the defeat. Spartak Vidnoye's coach rotated twelve players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Ural Ekaterinburg. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Univ.Surgut and Novosybirsk. Spartak Vidnoye lost their eighth game in a row. Newly promoted team still closes the standings with eight games lost. Ural Ekaterinburg will play against Ruskon-Mordovia (#6) in Saransk in the next round. Spartak Vidnoye will play at home against TEMP-SUMZ Revda (#8) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
