Playing overseas can be a very good situation to be in- Apr.2, 2010 (by Luis)
Hello Everybody!
To start, I will like to say that it has been a while since I kept up with a blog. Last time I entertained the idea of having a blog was in the 2004-2005 season, when I spent half of a season with the Golden State Warriors and the remainder half with the Denver Nuggets. Hello Everybody! To start, I will like to say that it has been a while since I kept up with a blog. Last time I entertained the idea of having a blog was in the 2004-2005 season, when I spent half of a season with the Golden State Warriors and the remainder half with the Denver Nuggets. Having taken part in that blog was a pleasure to me since it was a venue through which I could stay in touch with those that wanted an in-depth glance into my career and life. Needless say, I very much welcome the idea of engaging in this blog where I can once again share my experiences with those that are interested enough to take a closer look at my life overseas, on and off the court. Having said that, Im currently in Samara, Russia playing in the Russian superleague for a team named Krasnye Krylya or Red Wings. We take part in the Eurochallenge, which is an extention of, or what can be considered similar to what we are more familiar with, the Euroleague. We recently just qualified to the final four in the Eurochallenge. This is definitely something huge for us since, as I was told by one of my teammates, our team was predicted to be out in the first round. So much for those predictions! As for the Russian superleague, we are not doing so well though, we currently hold the 7th place out of nine teams. In the beginning of the season we were rolling and by mid-season we held the third place by ourselves. As we went home for Christmas break our coach got replaced by his assistant and we went on an 8 games slid and did not win a game for the entire month of January. In the months of February and March, a new coach was hired. We have won a few games, which have helped us stay in the hunt for playoff position. I hope we can maintain a good standing and therefore a playoff spot. Right now Im doing really well in the Eurochallenge games as Im averaging 18.8 points a game along with 4 assists. Through the years Ive learned that playing overseas can be a very good situation to be in. At times the game back home can be perceived as one that is predominantly dominated by athleticism, which can be a good thing but on the flip side it is also perceived as a game that lacks fundamentals. Basketball in Europe or overseas as we call it back home can be a very helpful route in learning how to play fundamentally sound basketball. One major reason for this is because here in Europe theyve basically eliminated the Jab Series or being able to move or drag your inside foot prior to letting the ball hit the ground, which is what American basketball is all about. This was the most difficult thing for me to adjust to when coming here to Europe. Not being able to shot fake and go right was like having to learn how to play basketball all over again. Having to Jab right and go left every time no matter if the advantage is on the right side, was something that my friends and I would joke about before I decided to come out here. Adjusting to the different game balls that are used in different countries and arenas can also be a little annoying but you adapt and just play the game. The exact date has not yet been determined, but early this month we are going to be taking place in a playoff preliminary round. In that round the last four teams of the league will be playing each other one time. Upon this happening 3 teams will advance to the playoffs along with the first 4 teams of the league. Hopefully on the next blog I will be speaking about us taking part in the first round of the playoffs. Wish me luck!!!
