Cherno more lost at home to croation Zadar by 63:73 (38:40) in the first
1/16 final game of Saporta Cup. The guests led all game through and never
were on jeopardy losing the game. Their only weak period came at the end of
the first half. Trailing by 14 points with 2 minutes to go bulgarians
managed to cut their deficit to just 2 at the halftime. But after that it
was all Zadar. The stars Komazec and Radja did their job and wre much helped
by Krunic, who became Zadar's topscorer with 19 points. Cherno more made
errors 9especially both americans Farmer and Hughes) and only Stoykov
effprts were not enough to save the day. We proved that we are the better
team, said Zadar head coach Ivica Buric. We conrolled the game and deserved
to win. I can't explain why did we play so terrible, so Cherno more coach
Simeon Varchev. Zadar is not better than us but used well our errors. I
don't have big expectations for the return leg but it's a fact that we play
better in away games.

In the in the beginning of the game very unlucky played "Lietuvos Rytas"
leaders - E.Elliott (0/4 first field goals) and A.Giedraitis (3 fouls in 1
half) , but bosnian team was not able to stop "Lietuvos Rytas" tallest
players - A.Okunsky , G.Aidietis and A.Kazlauskas easily collected rebounds
under the basket. Very successfully game started A.Slezas - he scored 7 of
his 11 points in the first few minutes of the game. Successfully from the
bench game started A.Macijauskas and "Lietuvos Rytas" was having advantage
in the most part of the first half."Bosna" leaders Halimic and Mirkovic
played not very good in the first half.Halimic in the first half scored only
6 points and Mirkovic was'nt very dangerous but after drives few times made
fine assists. In the first half for "Bosna" played only 6 players. In the
second half Halimic was irrepressible , but "Lietuvos Rytas" leaders Elliott
and Giedraitis started to play successfully and "Bosna" players got tired
and "Lietuvos Rytas" increased the advantage till 9 points - 58:67 but after
few mistakes "Bosna" reduced difference till 4 points - 65:69 , the last
points in the game scored A.Slezas by free throws. (Mindaugas Veromejus)

R.Jarutis in 20's , D.Salenga 18 - Tvrdic 27 pts, Zizic and Zemljic in 23's,
Vujcic 20)
In the in the beginning of the game fight went point to point - result was
6:6, 9:9 , 14:17 . It was very hard to "terminator" R.Matulis (198cm) and
E.Priudokas (196cm) play against croatians N.Vujcic (211cm) and A.Zizic
(207cm) . The tallest "Sakalai" player is S.Kuzminskas (209cm, 1982) but he
will be able to play in European cup games after few years. "Split" centers
and power forwards look effective to compare with "Sakalai" : N.Vujcic
(211cm) , A.Zizic (207cm) , H.Henjak (211cm) and J.Poljak (214m). "Sakalai"
played first Saporta cup game without ex head coach R.Paulauskas and
american PG J.Rich (now "Alita"). N.Vujcic in the first half was
irrepressible (he scored 14 pts). R.Matulis was not able to stop him ,
because it was his best game. In the first half "Split" players grabbed 26
rebounds and "Sakalai" - only 14 . Then croatian team won length 7:0 and
finished the half : 38:50. In the second half "Sakalai" after Salenga and
Jarutis 3 pointers reduced difference till 55:59. But "Split" team won one
more length 6:1 and kept advantage in all 2 half because they had the
advantage of height and fought for balls better than competitors . The
biggest advantage "Split" had at the end of the game - 75:91 , but "Sakalai"
as usual successfully played in the last seconds of the game . "Sakalai" had
no chances even to equalize the result although in group they lost only 3
times ("Split" - 4 times). However it is not the same team which played in
group. (Mindaugas Veromejus)
“Split” scored 4 “dry” points in the beginning of the game and didn’t lose
the preponderance. The score was equal 2 times 6:6 and 9:9. “Sakalai” was
trying to catch up with “Split”, but when the difference was small,
Croatians increased their advantage. Lithuanian team was playing well. It is
difficult to do something against the team, which has even 6 higher players
than the highest “Sakalai” player R.Matulis. It was much easier to score for
“Split” players and this team grabbed much more balls then “Sakalai” because
of the height advantage. In addition, “Sakalai” has financial problems,
coach R.Paulauskas, legionaries J.Rich and T.Mason left this club, so the
team became weaker. In the meanwhile, “Split” became stronger, because
D.Zemljc started to play in this team. Even 4 players from “Split” scored
more than 20 points and all of them are higher than 199 cm. (Gediminas
Lukasevicius)

That was an easy practice for Hapoel. The real games will start in the 1/8
finals , where Israli team will meet Lietuvos rytas (LTU).
As expected, Jerusalem crushes the Cypriots, maybe the weakest team which
made it to the 1/16 round. Derrick Hamilton came back after his forced-spell, and showed how
happy he is to get back to the team with a series of dunks, blocks and
assists (HJM finished with 32 assists!). Another statistical note: Jerusalem
made 13 shots out 17 from perimeter range! (Sagi Levanon)

Croatians did not leave the shadow of the chance for Sodi Varna, and proved
to be one level better team. Almost 30-points difefrence tells everything
about this spectacle. Now Zadar can focus on the game against Racing Paris
(FRA).

Pamesa Valencia had another easy game and despite that Belgian team tried
very hard get the victory, they were not able to do it. Spanish team will
face Chalon (FRA).
Lietuvos rytas Vilnius (LTU) - Bosna Sarajevo (BIH) 103-73 (Slezas

The second home game was way better for Lithuanian team. Bosnian team had no
solution for great performance of Lietuvos rytas. Lietuvos will face Hapoel
Jerusalem (ISR) in the 1/8 finals.
To compare with first game in Sarajevo "Lietuvos Rytas" leaders A.Giedraitis
and E.Elliott played much better and Halimic who was irrepressible in first
game have'nt possibilities to shoot from beyond the 3 points arc like he did
in first game. "Lietuvos Rytas" forwards and centers were much better under
the basket although A.Okunsky was'nt very good. G.Aidietis two times
made smashing dunks and "Bosna" have'nt any posibilities to reduced
difference. In the second half "Lietuvos Rytas" increased the advantage till
16 points - 87:51. But then "Lietuvos Rytas" coach let to play bench players
and "Bosna" won length 17:5 and reduced difference till 92:68. At the end of
the half "Lietuvos Rytas" second PG G.Kadziulis played great - he scored 3
pointer and then by smashing dunk ended the game .Final result - 103:73. (Mindaugas

Very tough game. 6-points advantage after the first game was definitely too
small for Tau Ceramica. So Spaniards had to take that game very seriously in
order to advance to 1/8 finals. Despite Tau Ceramica attacked from the first
minutes, they were not able to get bigger points distance. But 4-points
victory satisfied them a lot and now they will have to be ready for the game
against AEK Athens (GRE).
Ra'anana had to win by 6 to qualify to the next round. It was close alright.
Tau controled the boards (32-21) especially because of a weak day by
Steinahuer. However, Ra'anana
tied the game a couple of minutes to the end, but the much more experienced
Spaniards were more accurate in money time, and completed a 2-0 sweep. (Sagi

Hoop-Pekaes Pruszkow (POL) - Chalon (FRA) 88-77 (Jeklin 18, Dryja 16,
Bagatskis 14, Stern 9+14reb – Ostrowski 21+6reb, Gatlin 15, Robinson 14).
Attn: 3,500
It was not the first time, when Poles could not stop Ostrowski. 19-points
difference from the first game was too big for Pruszkow to catch up during
the home game. Despite 11 lost, Chalon advanced to 1/8 finals, where they
will meet the best Spoanish team this season Pamesa Valencia.
Racing Paris (FRA) - Ricoh Astronauts Amsterdam (NED) 75-70, OT (62-63,

Lieverst 13, Spinks 13+6reb, Mc Guthrie 12+6ast). Attn: 2,000
Dutch teamn was very close to a big sensation, and the game appeared to be
the most exciting in Saporta games tonight. Ricoh Astronauts went to Paris
as underdogs are they had to win the game at least by 2 points. The regular
time was finished with their two points victory, which means overtime.
However here host team showed more experience and won th ewhole event 75-70.
Racing will face KK Zadar in 1/8 finals.

Greek team should call it “an easy practice” having almost 40 points victory
over Swedish team. Norrkoping was not able challenge Iraklis, and only trio
Kruse – Kermoury – Prtic mainaged to give small resisatnce. 7 Iraklis
players scored in double figures. Iraklis will meet probably Split (CRO) in
the 1/8 finals.

After the miracle game in Latvia, Porto played much worse at home. But even
here Ventspils was not able to challenge Portuguese champions. Maynbe Portoi
should consider playing their home games at …Ventspils.
Zepter Slask Wroclaw (POL) - BK Slovakofarma Pezinok (SVK) 84-81 (41-45)

Zepter can say about good luck. Motivated Pezinok completely surprised host,
which was expecting an easy victory. Slovak champs won the first part by 4
points and Slask Zepter had to speed up in the second half to secure the
onlt ticket for Polish team in the 1/8 finals. Slask Zepter will play there
against Adecco Milano (ITA).
Kinder Bologna (ITA) - Telekom Bonn (GER) 87-69 (40-31) (Danilovic

11+10reb). Attn: 6,303
Despite Kinder slightly lowered their level comparing to the beginning of
this season, they are still considered as the main favorite for the Saporta
Cup winner. The game against Telekom Bonn confirmed only their high goals
for thi sseason. German team tried to challenge former Euroleague champions
only in forst 20 minutes. Then the game belonged to Italians. Their next
opponent in the 1/8 finals will be Frankfurt Skyliners (GER).
Even if the qualification to next Saporta round was almost sure, Kinder had
to check the shape and the performing of Stombergas and Ekonomou. Both the
players responded well, and now Kinder can look to next games with a sure
mind. But there are persisting rumors that the team is looking for an
imporrt center to strengthen the roster under the boards (and to respond to
Paf towering Vrankovic too). (John Smith)
Darussafaka Istanbul (TUR) - Radnicki Beograd (YUG) 75-60 (Guler 14,

Darussafaka managed to catch up with the 11-points difference from the first
game and won the second fight by 15. Their next opponent Porto seems very
unpredictable, so it should be an interesting game.
KK Split (CRO) - Sakalai Vilnius (LTU) 89-80 (37-37) (Subotić 7,

Split can celebrate their Saporta Cup 1/8 finals, while they were better
than their Lithuanian opponents and won the second game too.
Split Croatia osiguranje made another win against Sakalai 89:80 (37:37) and
now they will play in 1/8 of Saporta Cup against Iraklis. With the new coach
Petar Bezelj, players of Split delivered an important victory. But it was
very tough game for Split players since they were under very big preassure.
They made some childish mistakes, and in some segments of the game they
looked like they were playing together for the first time. But the final
result is the most important and everything else will be forgotten as soon
as posibble. (Zeljka Visosevic)
Frankfurt Skyliners (GER) - Plannja Basket (SWE) 71-58 (Collier 20p.
5reb., Guarasci 13p. 8reb. 6/6FG, Frisch 11p. 5/8FG, Kelecevic 8p. 6reb. -
Gehrke 20p. 5/6 3p. 77%FG, Banks 13p. 6reb., Aulander 7p., Lundahl 7p)
Easy game for Skyliners. Their another oppenent in the 1/8 finals will be
much stronger, since Kinder Bologna belongs still to the European elite.
Skyliners lead early in the game, through Alexander Frisch, who had some
good moments in the first half, scoring nine of his eleven points that
night. Plannja had a lot of turnovers and their shooting selection was more
then doubtful. Only Torbjorn Gehrke shot one three pointer after another,
but this didn’t helped the team, because their offensive game was weak that
night. A solid Gary Collier kept the Skyliners out of trouble in the second
half, when he scored most of his 20 points, leaving no doubts, that the
Skyliners will face Kinder in the next round. Peter Guarasci also performed
well, after he was sidelined against Alita and Zalgiris. Kai Nuernberger is
also back after an ankle injury, but he's now at 50%. Plannja-Coach Magarity
said after the match, that his team was not able to defend inside, giving
theirt opponents an easy job. He said also that Plannja had a great season
in the Saporta Cup, beating some top teams and advancing the first time to
the play-offs. Skyliners-Coach Koch said, that his team was in both games
better then Plannja, and he's looking forward to the Kinder-game, where he
see's his team with a chance of 30% or less, winning this match. (Kris

Krka (SLO) - Adecco Milano (ITA) 57-56 (36-36) (Nakic 17, Smodis
14+8reb, Viskovic 11+9reb – Nialon 18+9reb, Richardson 9+7reb, Portaluppi
9+5reb). Attn: 1,500
Tough game, since Krka wanted to win it very hard with the 7-points
difference. But Milano controled the game not allowing the host get bigger
advantage. Krka won it, but it was their last Euro game this season. Adecco
Milano will play against Polich champions Slask Zepter in the 1/8 finals.
About Adecco, Lee Nailon this time was in a UP night, and used well his
skills to guard Smodis, who was absent in first match, and was the main
problem to solve for Adecco.
Now, maybe that Milano will keep the roster so, after some days in which the
technical staff has been hiypotizing a two import guards roster, releasing
Nailon. (John Smith)
