Glasgow Rocks lift Senior Women Scottish Cup - Feb 6, 2012

The final game of the weekend started with Glasgow Rocks winning the tip off, Rona Corkindale unlucky to score, but it was Edinburgh first on target starting this final with a fine three point shot. We had a high scoring first period, the scores tied at 9-9 before the first time out was called with just over three minutes left in the quarter. Phil Birchs ladies came out fighting from there, going on a 4-0 run and moving 13-9 ahead, but Edinburgh stole a basket in the dying seconds, ending the quarter 13-11 in the Rocks favour.

Edinburgh started the second half strong, going into the lead and instigating a flurry of scoring, topped by a three pointer by Shirley Birch at the seven minute mark, swinging the lead in the Rocks favour. The Rocks continued this dominance, Rona Corkindales two made free throws and Mairi MacNeils three pointer taking the Glasgow team into a double digit lead for the first time in the game, Edinburgh then taking a time out with fifty seconds left in the quarter. This proved effective as a big push from the Kool Kats saw the difference reduced to six points with the score 31-25 to the Rocks at half time.

Glasgow charged ahead in the third, Ailidh Hood one of those on target as the Rocks went twelve points in the lead, but the difference was cut with a big three pointer from the Kool Kats. At the halfway point in the quarter the Rocks were still six points ahead until Lauren Walker of Edinburgh reduced this to four with a long range two pointer, and then right down to two with two made free throws by Sarah O'Brien (166-G-91) with four minutes to go in the third. Glasgow bounced back however and Phil Birchs side finished the third period strong, he score 54-47 to the Rocks.

Edinburgh got their dream start to the fourth quarter, scoring a quick basket and drawing an unsportsmanlike foul from Shirley Birch, converting both free throws and then scoring a three pointer from the halfway possession to take the game to just four points again. At the six minute mark however the Rocks had regained their commanding ten point lead and the city of Edinburgh were forced into a time out. It was pretty evenly matched for the next four minutes, both teams shooting well but Edinburgh again calling the time out at three minutes, the Rocks now eleven in the lead, which increased to thirteen after Ailidh Hoods trip to the free throw line following the technical foul called on Lauren Walker of the Kool Kats. The Rocks continued this until the end, eventually running out winners by twelve points. Final score: City of Edinburgh Kool Kats (60) (72) Glasgow Rocks.
