U18 Women Youth Play Offs Final
St Mirren Reid Kerr College v City of Edinburgh Kool Kats
St Mirren made a quick start, helped by J. Crawford who had been injured, as she stepped on court in her last game as U18 for St Mirren. R. Lewis took control of the game from point for her team while Kats captain K.Simpson was at the heart of both her teams offence and defence. S. Thomson scored an effortless layout after a smart steal from teammate E. Campbell as St Mirren were driven on after watching their U16s miss out on the trophy earlier in the day. Saints, pressed from half-court hoping to force Kool Kats into mistakes, Kats worked tirelessly with a man to man defence to stop the St Mirren offensive onslaught. St Mirrens efficiency arounfd the basket ensured they were in control while G. OBrian of Kats kept her team ticking over and ensured they stayed within touching distance. It was 15 -11 on the scoreboard but R. Lewis continued hussling and running, which paid off with a return of steals and efficient finishing. End of the quarter 22-13.
Similar dynamic at the beginning of the second quarter with Kats hussling on defence but not being able to convert their offensive opportunities as they had done through the season, as Saints continued to tick over and they pushed the score out to 39-20 at the end of the quarter.
St Mirrens passing was outstanding all game but especially in the third quarter, putting Kats under real pressure and forcing multiple turnovers. Kats came on court much more organised with K. Simpson and H Peacock showcasing their skills to contribute to their teams score and R. Simpson displaying a courageous effort on defence. St Mirren didnt drop the energy or rhythm, continuing to move the ball with pace and conviction to allow them to convert a number of easy points. End of the quarter score: 57-40.
Kats certainly werent going to disappear out of this final game though and took it to St Mirren again at teh start of the fourth with K. Simpson scoring the first 2 points. Kats zone defence helped to retain St Mirrens for the first 3 minutes reducing the difference on the scoreboard to 10 points but G McCrea scored 2 threes in a row for a 70-58 score with 3 minutes to the end. Both teams pushed until the last minute but St Mirren earned their right to win this one. Final score 72-61 for St Mirren, and emotional win to the team with S. Thomson, R.Lewis, G. McCrea and J Crawford playing their last game for St Mirren U18s .
