The Balkan battle opened the Eight Finals of the World Championship. Serbia became the first Quarterfinalist beating Croatia 73:72 in a thriller. Serbia started with 5-0 run, but could not kept the lead in the opening quarter. Bogdanovic Bojan tied it at 5:5, while Roko-Leni Ukic (195-G-84) brought his side 12:9. Bogdanovic Bojan increased to 20:13, while Loncar Kresimir made it 27:19 at the end of the period. Kosta Perovic (217-C-85) opened the second period with a dunk and Tepic Milenko reduced to 27:23. Moreover Kosta Perovic pulled Serbia to 29:29 making another dunk. Keselj Marko with a three gave them 34:32 and Nenad Krstic (214-C-83) made 36:34. Actually that was the end of the first half, however the Battle continued in the court. Aleksandar Rasic (195-G-84, agency: Beo Basket) started the third frame with a three-pointer for 37:36 and Nenad Krstic made two free-throws for 39:36. Roko-Leni Ukic tied it all at 40:40 and Bogdanovic Bojan brought Croatia 42:41. The squads exchanged the leads several times until the end of the quarter and Milan Macvan (205-F-89) scored for 54:50 for Serbia. The last frame became the most interesting in the game. Tomas Marko reduced it to 54:52 and Tomas Marko scored for 56:54. Serbia created a 5-0 run for 61:54, but the game was not over. Marko Popovic (185-G-82, college: S.Idaho JC) nailed three in reply for 64:60, while Marko Banic (204-F-84) n a row for 67:65. Marko Popovic reduced to 68:67 with 24 seconds in the game and he also scored for 70:69. Tomas Marko an unbelievable steal and passed again to Marko Popovic that made one free throw for 70:70. Aleksandar Rasic drove a lay-up for 72:70, while again Marko Popovic reduced to 72:72 with 5 seconds in the game. Aleksandar Rasic was however fouled and made one free throw for the final success. Nenad Krstic paced all the winners with 16 points and Aleksandar Rasic added 15. Kosta Perovic netted 10 and Milan Macvan scored 8. Marko Popovic had a great night in defeat finishing with 21 points for Croatia. Roko-Leni Ukic posted 11 and Marko Banic poured in 10.

Vladimir Stimac (209-C-87, agency: Interperformances) is coming back to Latvia. After two seasons in Crvena Zvezda, strong center signed with BK Ventspils. Before moving to Crvena Zvezda, Stimac played in SK Valmiera dominating in both Latvian and Baltic League. He was transferred on loan by Lithuanian powerhouse Zalgiris Kaunas.
Last season he averaged 7.3ppg and 5.0rpg in EuroCup and 6.4ppg and 3.4rpg in Adriatic League making Serbian League Playoff semifinal with his team [read more]

Serbia narrowly defeated Argentina in the final game of the preliminary round at the World Championship tonight. Serbia overcame another stellar performance from Luis Scola (206-F/C-80) to tame previously undefeated Argentina. The victory allowed Serbia to win Group A.

Serbia narrowly defeated Argentina in the final game of the preliminary round at the World Championship tonight. Serbia overcame another stellar performance from Luis Scola (206-F/C-80) to tame previously undefeated Argentina. The victory allowed Serbia to win Group A. It was a close game from start to finish. Argentina got to the better start as they were up 16:4 midway through the first frame. Pablo Prigioni (191-G-77) and Luis Scola gave the Latin American team a 20:7 advantage but Serbia scored next seven points to get closer. They managed to narrow the deficit at just two-point mark at the break 20:22. Luis Scola opened the second term with six points in a row as Argentina were back in the drivers seat. Milos Teodosic (195-G-87) nailed 7 points in a 9:0 run from Serbia as they surged in front 31:30. The lead changed hands for several times before Markovic sealed the first half outcome at 40:39 for Serbia. Jasen tipped off the second half with a triple as Argentina once again returned the lead. Serbia bounced back as they drove at 58:54 lead with ten minutes to go. Dusko Savanovic (204-F/C-83, agency: Beo Basket) and Nenad Krstic (214-C-83) notched four consecutive points at the beginning of the fourth stanza and Serbia accumulated a 62:54 lead. Nenad Krstic gave the European team a 9-point cushion midway through the fourth term 67:58. But Priogioni, Gutierrez and Luis Scola trimmed the deficit at just three points 72:75 with just over two minutes to go. Quinteros drained a three-pointer as the teams appeared tied at 75. Nenad Krstic and Luis Scola exchanged points but then Dusko Savanovic hit a trey to ensure an 80:77 lead for Serbia with 18 seconds remaining. Rasic then knocked down four free throws in the dying seconds to ice the victory for Serbia. Dusko Savanovic provided 19 points for Serbia. Nenad Krstic added 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Milos Teodosic had 16 points in the win. Luis Scola tallied game-high 32 points and 7 rebounds for Argentina. Carlos Delfino (198-G-82) and Pablo Prigioni finished with 13 points apiece in the losing effort.
