Poor season for Serbians in NBA - Jun 11, 2012

Vladimir
Radmanovic
10 years ago, every Serbian basketball fan knew starting lineup of Sacramento Kings. 10 years ago, Serbian basketball fans didn't sleep because they wanted to see Vlade Divac and Peja Stojakovic in action as Kings were among the favourites to win the NBA Championship. 10 years ago, most of NBA international players were from Serbia and only USA - of course - had more NBA players. Now, if Serbian would like to see Serbian player in action in NBA, he/she would have to wait for garbage time of meaningless games.

Only three Serbians were part of the best league in the World in 2011/2012 season. Boston Celtics were one win away from NBA Finals, but Sasa Pavlovic (200-F/G-83) didn't have significant role in their run. Guard-forward played 45 games this season and averaged 2.7 points (FG 39.1 %, 3PT 29.3% and FT 37.5%), 1.6 rebounds and 0.4 assists in 11:41 minutes. Sasa played more when Celtics had injury problems, but obviously didn't convince Doc Rivers that he could do the job in important games - did not play in playoffs except in garbage time.
In first round of playoffs, Celtics eliminated Hawks. Vladimir Radmanovic (208-F-80) played two games in series between Atlanta and Boston and failed to score in 15 minutes on court. 'Radman' played 49 games in total - 4.5 points (FG 37.6%, 3PT 37.0% and FT 75.9%), 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 15:24 minutes. He started well, but his minutes and production on court were going down throughout the season as coach Larry Drew was losing faith in his abilities.
Finally, Darko Milicic (212-C-85). Eurobasket.com already wrote about him. His coach in Minnesota Timberwolves said everything about him in couple of words. Serbian center had another disappointing season and Rick Adelman didn't want to use him in final part of the season, not even in garbage time. Darko's numbers (4.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 16:18 minutes) are not even the biggest problem for him. As veteran coach said: 'He hasn't done anything to give you faith that he's going to go out and do the job. He's gotten himself out of shape and I don't think he's been as driven as you'd like.'

Conclusion is obvious: Celtics, Hawks and Timberwolves could live without their Serbian players in the future. All three Serbians are in the league for years - Vladimir Radmanovic was drafted in 2001, while Darko Milicic and Sasa Pavlovic were drafted in 2003. There are no new players from Serbia in NBA and it looks like that will not change in near future. Most serious candidate to join NBA is probably Nemanja Bjelica, but days when Serbia had many NBA players are definitely over.
