Racism or Nationalism - Oct 21, 2012

Marko Jaric
Marko Jaric is a proud Serb, this much we know.
He loves his country and defends its honor.

In response to accusations that Serbian fans subjected Danny Rose a black England player to racist monkey chants, Jaric tweeted:
"Could Englishmen teach us about human rights?
They invented hooliganism and slavery.
"I know my people, I know that we are not racists. The fans, especially in Eastern Europe, will go to every point to try and piss you off. If its skin color theyre going to call you that, if its something else, trust me, theyre going to find something to get to you. But I know that it is not because we are racist."

What can we call the actions of the Serbian fans? Was Jaric accurate?

1) Did the English Invent Slavery?
Slavery's roots can be traced back to the Code of Hammbuabi (c. 1760 BC). So Jaric, far from a historian, was a few years off on his accusation against the British.

2) Did the British invent hooliganism?
Well, the actual word was possibly first widely used in the late 1800s in Britain to describe street gang behavior. And in the 1970's the word was used to describe rowdy crowds at British football games. But crowd violence at sporting events was recorded as long ago as the year 532 when the Nika Riots broke out in Constantinople, when two chariot racing factions nearly burned down the half the city. So Jaric may have been correct about the word "hooliganism", but was again off some year on his claim.

3) Are Serbians racists?
No. The actions of a few should not condemn the many. Jaric is correct.

4) Were the monkey chants of some Serbian fans a racist provocation?
Not much question about this one. The taunts were rooted in the "belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race" Jaric is correct that Serbian fans were trying to get under the skin of Danny Rose. Problem is that they couldn't get past the skin of Danny Rose. One cannot hide racism behind the cloak of gamesmanship or nationalism. Jaric is mistaken.
