A League Round 17: Sabac defeats Srbobran Reahem in the closest game of the week - Jan 24, 2013

The most exciting game of round 17 in the A League took place in Sabac. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 7th ranked Srbobran Reahem (7-9) to fourth ranked Sabac (9-7) 58-57 on Wednesday evening. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 20-17. But Srbobran Reahem won second period 13-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Sabac won last quarter 13-14. They made 16-of-18 free shots (88.9 percent) during the game. They also forced 21 Srbobran Reahem turnovers. Center Mirjana Velisavljevic (188-78) stepped up and scored 12 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and forward Jelena Stankovic (180-93) chipped in 14 points and 5 rebounds. Forward Branka Stankovic (183-86) responded with 16 points and 5 rebounds (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!). Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Sabac maintains fourth place with 9-7 record. Newly promoted Srbobran Reahem dropped to the eighth position with nine games lost. Sabac are looking forward to face Stara Pazova (#9) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Srbobran Reahem will play against Radnicki KG in Kragujevac and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
The game between Top Four teams took place in Kragujevac. Third ranked host Radnicki KG (10-5) defeated second-ranked Jagodina 2001 (13-3) 76-70. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Jagodina 2001. Bosnian center Nikolina Milic (195-94) nailed 18 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side and Aleksandra Katic accounted for 22 points and 4 steals. The former international power forward Ivana Grubor (185-84) came up with 25 points and 7 rebounds for Jagodina 2001 in the defeat. Radnicki KG maintains third place with 10-5 record having four points less than leader Crvena Zvezda. Jagodina 2001 at the other side keeps the second position with three games lost. Radnicki KG will play against Srbobran Reahem (#8) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Jagodina 2001 will have a break next round.
A League top team - Crvena Zvezda (14-1) had no problems winning another game on Wednesday. This time they crushed eleventh ranked Celarevo (0-15) 98-51. The best player for the winners was Katarina Vuckovic who scored 18 points and 4 assists. Milena Lakovic produced 15 points and 7 rebounds for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Crvena Zvezda have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They maintain first place with 14-1 record. Loser Celarevo still closes the standings with 15 games lost. Crvena Zvezda will meet at home Beocin (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Celarevo will play against Vrbas Medela and hopes to get finally their first victory.
A very interesting game took place in Nis. It ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 9th ranked Stara Pazova (6-10) to sixth ranked Student Radnicki (8-8) 53-50 on Wednesday evening. Marija Ilic orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. Stara Pazova's coach Jovan Gorec rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Student Radnicki moved-up to fifth place. Stara Pazova at the other side keeps the ninth position with ten games lost. Student Radnicki's next round opponent will be Sumadija KG (#6) in Kragujevac. Stara Pazova will play at home against Sabac.

In the last game of round 17 Sumadija KG won against Beocin on the opponent's court 70-55.

Beocin - Sumadija KG 55-70

Rather expected game when 10th ranked Beocin (4-11) was defeated at home by eighth ranked Sumadija KG (7-8) 70-55. The game was mostly controlled by Sumadija KG. Beocin was better in third quarter 20-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The victory was the third consecutive win for Sumadija KG. They moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Vrbas Medela. Beocin at the other side keeps the tenth position with 11 games lost. Sumadija KG's next round opponent will be higher ranked Student Radnicki (#5) in Nis and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Beocin will play on the road against the league's leader Crvena Zvezda (#1) in Beograd.

Celarevo - Crvena Zvezda 51-98

A League top team - Crvena Zvezda (14-1) had no problems winning another game on Wednesday. This time they crushed eleventh ranked Celarevo (0-15) 98-51. The game was mostly controlled by Crvena Zvezda. Celarevo managed to win second period 24-23. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Celarevo to just 6 points in third quarter. Crvena Zvezda dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Celarevo's 34 and made 25-of-31 free shots (80.6 percent) during the game. Crvena Zvezda forced 23 Celarevo turnovers and outrebounded them 48-22 including a 34-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. Crvena Zvezda looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Celarevo's players. The best player for the winners was power forward Katarina Vuckovic (191-94) who scored 18 points and 4 assists. Center Marija Radovic (186-91) chipped in 19 points. Five Crvena Zvezda players scored in double figures. Milena Lakovic produced 15 points and 7 rebounds and forward Maja Strbac (173-94) added 15 points respectively for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Student - Stara Pazova 53-50

A very interesting game took place in Nis. It ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 9th ranked Stara Pazova (6-10) to sixth ranked Student Radnicki (8-8) 53-50 on Wednesday evening. Stara Pazova was tied at the half but could not keep up in last two quarters eventually losing the game. They outrebounded Stara Pazova 36-25 including 22 on the defensive glass. Center Marija Ilic (190-85, agency: Global Sports Plaza) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. Forward Marija Tosic (178-83) contributed with 9 points for the winners. Swingman Dijana Stancic (182-93) answered with 23 points and guard Zorana Nikolic (166-92) added 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the effort for Stara Pazova. Stara Pazova's coach Jovan Gorec rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Student Radnicki moved-up to fifth place. Stara Pazova at the other side keeps the ninth position with ten games lost. Student Radnicki's next round opponent will be Sumadija KG (#6) in Kragujevac. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Jagodina 2001. The hosts were ahead by 2 points but lost the second period ending it with a 1-point deficit before their 27-20 run, which allowed them to win the game. Radnicki KG forced 24 Jagodina 2001 turnovers. Bosnian center Nikolina Milic (195-94) nailed 18 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side and guard Aleksandra Katic (172-87, college: Brown) accounted for 22 points and 4 steals. 37-year old power forward Suzana Milovanovic (185-PF-79) put on an amazing game in the last round for Partizan and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 17. She had a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds, while her team beat Novosadska ZKA (#11, 3-13) 67-55. Partizan maintains the 3rd position in Serbian 1 ZLS.
