Extraliga Round 21: Levice defeats leader Komarno - Jan 7, 2013

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked Komarno (14-4) on the court of fourth ranked Levice on Monday night. Visitors were defeated by Levice 72-55. The game was mostly controlled by Levice. Komarno managed to win second period 18-12. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Levice made 8 blocks. It was a good game for American guard Brandon Fields (193-88, college: Nevada) who led his team to a victory with 15 points and 7 assists. International forward Jozef Vojtek (204-85) contributed with 8 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Levice's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward Kevin Thompson (205-89, college: Morgan St.) answered with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 12 rebounds for Komarno. Levice (11-6) moved-up to third place. Komarno at the other side still keeps top position with four games lost. Levice are looking forward to face Nova Ves (#4) on the road in the next round. Komarno will play against the league's second-placed Nitra in Nitra and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Nova Ves (11-8) against fifth ranked Prievidza (9-9) on Saturday night. Visiting Nova Ves were defeated by Prievidza in a tough game in Prievidza 87-94. American forward Joseph Harris (196-87, college: Co.Carolina) stepped up and scored 23 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and Justin Manns chipped in 18 points and 7 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). The best for the losing side was American point guard Maurice Acker (178-87, college: Marquette) with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 12 assists. Defending champion maintains fifth place with 9-9 record. Nova Ves at the other side dropped to the fourth position with eight games lost. Prievidza will play against Inter Bratislava (#6) on the road in the next round. Nova Ves will play against Levice and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 21 Inter Bratislava beat Svit on the road 88-79. B.Bystrica won against Handlova on its own court 90-84.
The most impressive performance of 21th round was 36 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds by Kevin Bridgewaters of Handlova.


Levice - Komarno 72-55

Svit - Inter Bratislava 79-88

No shocking result in a game when sixth ranked Inter Bratislava (9-10) beat on the road bottom-ranked Svit (4-16) 88-79. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 31-17. But Svit won second period 16-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Inter Bratislava made 17-of-20 charity shots (85.0 percent) during the game. The former international power forward Martin Rancik (204-78, college: Iowa St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 29 points and 12 rebounds for the winners and American guard Clarence Jackson (193-89, college: Siena) chipped in 26 points and 5 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American forward A.J. Stewart (205-88, college: Texas St.) with a double-double by scoring 29 points and 10 rebounds and the other American import forward Kenneth Henderson (201-82, college: Texas Arlington) scored 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Svit's coach David Solomon rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Inter Bratislava maintains sixth place with 9-10 record. Svit at the other side stay at the bottom position with 16 games lost. Inter Bratislava will play against higher ranked Prievidza (#5) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Svit will play against Handlova (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 8th ranked Handlova's (5-12) road loss to seventh ranked SKP Banska Bystrica (8-11) 84-90. The hosts were tied after three quarters but managed to speed up in last quarter eventually winning the game. SKP Banska Bystrica forced 21 Handlova turnovers. Handlova was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Bosnian center Stjepan Gavran (206-78) stepped up and scored 20 points and 7 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners and Croatian forward Sasa Jankovic (204-84) chipped in 14 points and 9 rebounds. Five SKP Banska Bystrica players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American guard Kevin Bridgewaters (175-84, college: Chattanooga, agency: TSS Management) with 36 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds and the other American import center Zack Crimmins (213-89, college: Columbia) scored 16 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. SKP Banska Bystrica maintains seventh place with 8-11 record. BK 04 AC LB Spisska Nova Ves (SBL) signed Canadian forward Matt Marshall (198-98kg, college: Brock). It is actually his comeback to Nova Ves as he has played here before. Marshall played last season at Niagara River Lions in Canadian NBL. But in three NBL Canada games he had just 0.7ppg. Marshall also played that season for BK 04 AC LB Spisska Nova Ves where in 26 SBL games he recorded 7.3ppg, 6.6rpg and 1.4apg. BC Prievidza (SBL) strengthened their roster with addition of 23-year old American forward Chris Perry (203-113kg-94). He just graduated from Lincoln Memorial (NCAA2). In 28 games he recorded very impressive stats: 17.7ppg, 8.4rpg and 1.3bpg last season. Perry helped them to make it to the final and they also made it to the NCAA D2 Final Four.
