Extraliga Round 27: Inter Bratislava beats Nitra by one after a very close game - Feb 9, 2013

The most exciting game of round 27 in the Extraliga took place in Bratislava. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 3rd placed Nitra (15-10) to sixth ranked Inter Bratislava (11-13) 89-88 on Saturday evening. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 28-24. But Nitra won second period 21-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. It was a good game for the former international power forward Martin Rancik (204-78, college: Iowa St.) who saved his team from a defeat with a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!) and 14 rebounds. Serbian point guard Nenad Milosevic (190-83) contributed with 17 points and 7 assists for the winners. Bahamas guard J.R. Cadot (195-87, college: TCU) answered with 17 points and 9 rebounds for Nitra. Inter Bratislava maintains sixth place with 11-13 record. Nitra at the other side keeps the third position with ten games lost. Inter Bratislava are looking forward to face league's second-placed Levice on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Nitra will play against Handlova and is hoping to win this game. Bottom-ranked Svit managed to get a sixth victory, breaking the series of two consecutive loses. This time they won against seventh-ranked SKP Banska Bystrica82-69. It was a great evening for American guard Ravone George (193-83, college: Alabama) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points, 9 assists and 4 steals. Sean Smith helped adding 20 points and 4 assists. The best for the losing side was American forward Noah Dahlman (199-89, college: Wofford) with 6 points and 9 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Svit maintains ninth place with 6-19 record. SKP Banska Bystrica at the other side keeps the seventh position with 14 games lost. Svit will play against higher ranked Prievidza (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. SKP Banska Bystrica will play against Inter Bratislava and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Extraliga top team - Komarno (18-5) added another victory to their record on Saturday. This time they beat fifth ranked Prievidza (11-12) 95-87. It was a quality performance for Vincent Simpson who led the winners and scored 29 points and 4 assists. Joseph Harris came up with 21 points and 7 rebounds (perfect from the field making all nine shots !!!) for Prievidza in the defeat. Prievidza's coach Raul Jimenez rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Komarno have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain first place with 18-5 record. Defending champion Prievidza keeps the fifth position with 12 games lost. Komarno will meet Nova Ves (#4) on the road in the next round. Prievidza will play against Svit and hope to secure a win. The game in Handlova supposed to be also worth to mention about. Second ranked Levice (17-6) played at the court of 8th ranked Handlova (6-17). Levice smashed Handlova 94-73. Levice have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. They maintain second place with 17-6 record behind leader Komarno. Handlova lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with 17 games lost. Levice's next round opponent will be Inter Bratislava (#6) at home. Handlova will play against Nitra in Nitra.

His fellow American import forward Amin Stevens (198-90, college: Florida A&M) accounted for 22 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side. Four Komarno players scored in double figures. In the last season he averaged 13.6 points, 4 rebounds and 4.2 assists. He comes in Prievidza from strong Danish club that has played in Finals last four seasons in row. Slovakian Anton Gavel (188-PG-84, agency: Pro One Sports) wins the title abroad as his Brose Baskets claimed the fourth straight BBL title in Germany. They swept the title series versus EWE Baskets following a tough overtime win in Bamberg. Bostjan Nachbar scored 20 points to pace Brose Baskets to the key victory tonight.

The visitors gained a 17:13 lead after the opening frame. EWE Baskets maintained the lead throughout the second period. They ensured a 37:32 halftime lead. Bostjan Nachbar and Alex Renfroe denied the deficit putting the hosts up by one 40:39 midway through the third term. The lead changed hands for several times before Mustafa Abdul-Hamid made it 53:49 for the visitors. Casey Jacobsen trimmed the gap at 2-point mark 51:53 at the third break. The teams continued to go toe for toe throughout the fourth period. Bostjan Nachbar almost singlehandedly put the hosts in front 70:68. Adam Chubb followed an offensive rebound with a put back to make it 70:70. Chris Kramer sank two free throws to give Oldenburg a 72:70 lead with under two minutes remaining. Bostjan Nachbar evened the game but Adam Chubb sank another basket to pull the visitors in front 74:72 with just six seconds left in regulation. Brose Baskets set up a three-point attempt for Casey Jacobsen. He missed it but Maik Zirbes tipped the ball in and sent the game into overtime. Casey Jacobsen set the tone with a three-pointer early in the extra period. Bostjan Nachbar soon stretched the lead to 7 points 85:78. Dru Joyce put EWE Baskets within three on several occasions but Casey Jacobsen nailed three free throws late in overtime to seal the victory for Brose Baskets. He finished with 15 points, while Alex Renfroe added 14 points for the winning side. Chris Kramer, Dru Joyce and Adam Chubb answered with 16 points each for EWE Baskets. Anton Gavel averaged 12.3ppg, 2.1rpg, 3.0apg, FGP: 51.4%, 3PT: 36.7%, FT: 79.4% in EuroLeague and had 14.8 points per game in BBL.

The Head Coach Krunoslav Krajnovic builds up competitive roster to achieve the highest goals of the club. BC Prievidza has confirmed negotiations with three Slovak players and one foreigner.
