Helios beat Zlatorog in Game 4 to claim second title - Jun 5, 2016
Helios Suns won their second Slovenian League championship title by defeating Zlatorog 64-56 in Game 4 of their best-of-five series. Marijan Cakarun (204-C-90) led all scorers with 19 points for Helios and Hugh Robertson (195-G-89, college: S.Florida) added 11 points. Zlatorog shot just 27-percent (16-of-59) from the field and now have lost their all four final series so far (1999, 2000, 2004, 2016). Dejan Jeftic (197-F-89) came off the bench for team-high 12 points and Goran Jurak (202-F/C-77) scored 10. Zlatorog trailed just once in the first quarter, 2-3, after Simo Atanackovic (206-F-90) scored a jumper and an additional free throw after being fouled. The visitors had their largest lead of the night at 22-14 midway through the second quarter, but Helios responded with an 11-0 run for their second advantage of the game, 25-24. Zlatorog twice retake the lead (25-24, 27-26), before Helios go ahead 30-27 late in the first halftime and never looked back for the rest of the game. Marijan Cakarun (204-C-90) opened the second half with six straight points and Jan Mocnik (178-PG-87) hit a 3-pointer to end a 9-0 run for a 42-31 lead, the largest margin of the game. Zlatorog reduced the deficit to 54-56 and had a chance to take the lead, but Miha Vasl (192-G-92) missed a 3-pointer and, after an offensive rebound, Dejan Jeftic (197-F-89) missed another shot attempt with two minutes left. From that point, Marijan Cakarun (204-C-90) hit back-to-back shots from the paint and Jan Mocnik (178-PG-87) added a pair of free throws to put Helios up 62-54 just 15 seconds remaining.
Krka claim third straight Cup title, Luka Lapornik named MVP - Feb 21, 2016
Krka collected their third straight Slovenian Cup title downing Lastovka 66-33 in the 2016 Finals at Hall Tivoli in Ljubljana. Krka's 66 points are the fewest of any cup winner ever and Lastovka' 33 points are the fewest of any cup finalist ever. Ziga Dimec Team earned the victory in the traditional All-Star Game in Vrhnika at the weekend. Ziga Dimec unloaded 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace the winners. Matic Rebec Team recorded a 41:25 lead after the opening frame. But Ziga Dimec selection went on a 41:19 rally in the second term to ensure a 66:60 halftime lead. Ziga Dimec Team drained 60 points in the second half and marched to the victory at the end. Robert Abramovic (185-PG-88, agency: Hoops Marketing) netted 21 points, while Miha Vasl (192-G-92) added 12 points for the winners. Cory Remekun (203-F/C-91, college: St.Louis, agency: Arete Sports Agency) responded with 29 points for Matic Rebec Team. Matic Rebec notched 12 points and 11 assists in the loss. Miha Vasl earned victory in the Three-Point Shootout Contest.
Tajfun win first Supercup, Cebular MVP - Sep 26, 2015
Tajfun Sentjur became the third Slovenian Supercup champion as they defeated Krka 72-60 in Skofja Loka. Sandi Cebular (195-G-86, agency: ProStep Sports Agency) had 15 points and 5 assists and was named MVP, Ceola Clark III (190-G-89, college: W.Illinois, agency: Lee Basketball Services Ltd.) added 12 points, all from behind the 3-point arc, Ivan Drzic (204-C-83) came off the bench for 10 points. Krka was led by game-high 18 points from Jure Lalic (211-C-86, agency: Agency), Stefan Sinovec (195-G-88, agency: Beo Basket) scored 16 points off the bench, Ive Ivanov (200-C-85, agency: Agency) finished with 11 points. After Krka hit its opening basket, Sandi Cebular sank back-to-back 3-pointers to inspire Tajfun to a 16-4 run. Tajfun extended their lead to 49-29 late in the second quarter. They shot 68% from the field in the first halftime, including 11-of-13 from 2-point range. Krka opened second half with a 13-4 run and Jure Lalic scored 10 points in that span. Jacob Parker and Ceola Clark III made back-to-back 3-pointers to put Tajfun ahead 59-45. Krka cut the deficit to five points, 55-60, early in the fourth quarter,but Tajfun responded with a 12-3 run.
