Goran Dragic's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Slovenians playing currently abroad - Mar 2, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Slovenians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is former international point guard Goran Dragic (190-86, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Phoenix Suns (21-39) in their last game. Despite Dragic's very good performance the Phoenix Suns were crushed 113-88 at home by the Boston Celtics. He had a double-double by scoring 19 points and making 10 passes. Dragic also added 5 rebounds and 2 blocks in 43 minutes on the court. It's Dragic's first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Dragic averages: 14.2ppg, 2.9rpg, 6.9apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 49.4%, 3FGP: 31.2% and FT: 73.6% in the 58 games he played so far. He played for the Slovenian senior national team two years ago.

Beno Udrih

   #2. Second place goes to former international point guard Beno Udrih (194-82, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. Udrih was not able to help the Orlando Magic (16-43) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite his good performance the Orlando Magic was crushed 125-101 on the road by the Sacramento Kings. Udrih recorded 14 points and added 8 assists (made all of his seven free throws). Udrih has relatively good stats this season: 8.0ppg, 2.0rpg, 8.0apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 40.9%, 3FGP: 14.3% and FT: 91.7%. He played for the Slovenian national team in 2010.

   #3. The Slovenian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international power forward Erazem Lorbek (209-84, college: Michigan St., currently plays in Euroleague). Lorbek led his Spanish team Regal FC Barcelona to a 2-point victory against the fourth-ranked Khimky (5-4) 71-69 in the Euroleague on Thursday night. He scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds (went 6 for 6 at the free throw line) in 29 minutes. Regal FC Barcelona (8-1) is placed first in group F. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. Lorbek is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Regal FC Barcelona's roster. This season Lorbek's overall stats are: 9.1ppg, 3.5rpg, 1.1apg, 2FGP: 52.9% and FT: 72.4% in the 18 games. He played for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #4. Power forward Bostjan Nachbar (207-80, currently plays in Germany) was the major contributor in a Brose Baskets Bamberg's victory against the 16th-ranked EnBW Ludwigsburg (9-16) crushing them 88-68 in the German BBL in Monday night's game. Nachbar scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Brose Baskets Bamberg (21-2) is placed first in the BBL. It was his team's 11th consecutive victory in a row. This season Nachbar has relatively solid stats: 13.1ppg, 4.2rpg and 2.3apg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2010.

Former international point guard Aleksandar Capin (186-82, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Adriatic League) led his Serbian team Radnicki KG to a victory over the closely-ranked Buducnost (14-9) 78-63 in the Adriatic League last Saturday. Capin was MVP of the game. He scored 23 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 39 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Radnicki Kragujevac (15-8) is placed third in the Adriatic League. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Adriatic League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Capin is ranked first on the list of the top scorers in the league and also on the list of best passers (first place). He has very impressive stats this year: 17.5ppg, 2.6rpg, 5.3apg and 1.4spg in the 20 games. Capin has a dual citizenship: Slovenian and Serbian. He used to play for the Slovenian national team five years ago.

   #6. Power forward Gasper Vidmar (211-87, currently plays in Turkey) was not able to secure a victory for Besiktas (12-7) in their game against Fenerbahce Ulker (17-2) in the Turkish TBL. Despite his good performance on Monday night Vidmar recorded 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Vidmar's total stats this season are: 8.4ppg, 6.1rpg and 1.1apg. He is a former international player as he played for the Slovenian senior team three years ago.

   #7. Former international center Mirza Begic (217-85, currently plays in Euroleague) contributed to a 3-point Real Madrid's victory against the eighth-ranked Brose Baskets Bamberg (0-9) 76-73 in the Euroleague in Thursday night's game. Begic scored 8 points in 15 minutes. Real Madrid (8-1) is placed first in group E. This year Begic's total stats are: 4.9ppg and 3.1rpg in the 19 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #8. Forward Marko Milic (201-77, currently plays in Iran) contributed to Mahram's victory against the closely-ranked Foolad Mahan (15-3) 84-76 in the Iranian Superleague last Tuesday. Milic recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 10 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Mahram Tehran (14-3) is placed third in the Superleague. Milic is currently fourth on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (first place). This season he has very high stats. Milic averages: 16.4ppg, 9.0rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1spg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2006.

Former U18 international guard Bojan Krivec (188-87, currently plays in Croatia) couldn't help Kvarner 2010 (12-4) in their game against Alkar Sinj (10-6) in the Croatian A1, despite his good performance on Saturday night. Krivec scored 12 points, made 6 passes and 3 steals in 32 minutes. But the league leader Kvarner 2010 lost 62-67 in Sinj to the lower-ranked (#4) Alkar. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Krivec is ranked first on the list of the best passers in the league and also on the list of most steals (fourth place). He has averaged so far 9.9ppg, 2.1rpg, 4.9apg and 1.6spg in the 16 games. Krivec used to play for the Slovenian U18 national team eight years ago.

   #10. Small forward Emir Preldzic (205-87, also represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Turkey) faced previously mentioned Gasper Vidmar in the Turkish TBL last game. Preldzic managed to help Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul to win against the 12th-ranked Besiktas (5-16) 78-70 in a derby game. He recorded 5 points and added 5 assists. Preldzic has been at the team for six years. Preldzic is currently fifth on the list of best passers. He has averaged so far 9.1ppg, 4.1rpg and 4.6apg. Preldzic is a former international player as five years ago he still played for the Slovenian senior national team.

   #11. Former international forward Zeljko Zagorac (204-81, currently plays in Hungary) was the main contributor in Falco-Szova's victory against one of league's weakest teams FS Debrecen crushing them 130-42 in the Hungarian A Division last Wednesday. He was the best player in that game. Zagorac scored 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 23 minutes. He has very impressive stats this year: 21.1ppg, 12.6rpg and 1.1spg in the seven games. Zagorac used to play for the Slovenian national team five years ago.

   #12. Former international forward Dragisa Drobnjak (200-77, another player represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Belgium) contributed to a Base Oostende's victory against the sixth-ranked Leuven Bears 80-72 in the Belgian Ethias League on Friday night. He scored 9 points and added 4 passes. Drobnjak has averaged so far 9.6ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.6apg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2008.

   #13. Former U21 international point guard Matej Venta (188-84, currently plays in Czech Republic) helped BK Lions Hradec win their game against the seventh-ranked BK Usti nad Labem 91-87 in the Czech Republic NBL in Wednesday night's game. Venta scored 22 points, grabbed 5 boards, dished 7 assists and stole 4 balls (was perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line) in 32 minutes. He has very impressive stats this year: 19.6ppg, 6.4rpg, 5.0apg and 1.3spg in the seven games. Venta used to play for the Slovenian U21 national team eight years ago.

   #14. Former U20 international point guard Mirza Sarajlija (187-91, currently plays in Serbia) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Tamis in their game against Borac in the Serbian A League. Despite his very good performance last Saturday He was the second best scorer with 16 points. Sarajlija also added made 3 passes and 4 steals. He has averaged so far 8.4ppg, 2.0rpg, 1.2apg and 1.4spg. Sarajlija used to play for the Slovenian U20 national team back in 2011.

   #15. Former international power forward Miha Zupan (205-82, currently plays in Turkey) helped Turk Telekom win their game against the closely-ranked Tofas 76-70 in the Turkish TBL on Saturday night. He scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a mere 19 minutes. Zupan has reliable stats this year: 11.8ppg, 6.1rpg and 1.6apg in the 20 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Slovenian passport but never been selected to any of Slovenian national teams:

   #1. Experienced Vlado Ilievski (190-PG-80, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Adriatic League), who plays in Croatia could not help Cedevita (12-10) to beat Szolnok (7-15). Ilievski cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 3 points and added 4 passes. Cedevita was defeated 64-59 on the road by the lower-ranked Szolnok (#12). There are only four games left until the end of the Adriatic League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Ilievski has averaged so far 5.0ppg, 1.1rpg and 2.2apg. He has a dual citizenship: FYR Macedonian and Slovenian.

   #2. Nejc Strnad (190-PG-83, currently plays in Greece) led Ikaros to a victory against one of league's weakest teams Peristeri GS (5-14) 88-79 in the Greek A1 last Saturday. Strnad recorded 13 points and had 3 steals in a mere 17 minutes. Ikaros Kallitheas (8-11) is placed eighth in the A1. This year Strnad averages only 2.5ppg in the 17 games he played so far.

   #3. Rasid Mahalbasic (211-C-90, currently plays in Poland) was not able to help Asseco Prokom Gdynia (14-7) in their game against Trefl Sopot (14-7) in the Polish TBL. He scored 6 points in 19 minutes. Asseco Prokom Gdynia lost 65-78 in Sopot to the second-ranked Trefl. It was Asseco Prokom Gdynia's first loss after four consecutive victories. Mahalbasic's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Mahalbasic has averaged so far 8.4ppg and 5.1rpg in the 21 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Austrian and Slovenian.

   #4. Damir Zeleznik (185-G-80, currently plays in Austria) contributed to a Xion Dukes' victory against the closely-ranked BC Vienna (8-7) 92-79 in the Austrian A Bundesliga in Friday night's game. Zeleznik recorded 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Xion Dukes Klosterneuburg (16-7) is placed fourth in the A Bundesliga. Zeleznik has averaged so far 7.9ppg, 2.6rpg, 3.5apg and 1.1spg. He has both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenian nationalities.

   #5. Jure Balazic (204-F-80, currently plays in Turkey) was not able to secure a victory for Erdemir (7-13) in their game against Hacettepe (4-16) in the Turkish TBL. Balazic recorded 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 32 minutes. Erdemir was edged 71-69 at home by the league outsider (#16) Hacettepe. It was Erdemir's third consecutive loss in a row. Balazic's stats this year are: 11.4ppg and 5.0rpg in the 19 games.

   #6. Marko Milicevic (204-F-82, currently plays in Greece) helped Ikaroi Serron win their game against the tenth-ranked Arkadikos 65-60 in the Greek A2 (second division) on Saturday night. He scored 11 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 25 minutes. Milicevic has averaged so far 8.7ppg and 4.4rpg in the 16 games. He also holds two passports: Serbian and Slovenian.

   #7. Rene Zvan (182-PG-87, currently plays in Slovakia) couldn't help Nitra in their game against Nova Ves in the Slovakian Extraliga. Zvan cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 3 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 19 minutes. His team lost 84-94. Zvan has averaged so far 3.7ppg, 1.3rpg and 2.2apg in the 25 games.

   #8. Uros Benacek (206-C-92, currently plays in Czech Republic) couldn't help BC Kolin in their game against BK Decin in the Czech Republic NBL. He scored only 4 points. His team was defeated 96-91. Benacek has averaged so far 4.0ppg and 1.6rpg.

Krka Novo Mesto (Telemach League) agreed terms with 30-year old ex-international guard Sandi Cebular (195-86, agency: Duran International). He played last season at Tajfun (Telemach League). In 12 games he had 14.3ppg, 3.5rpg, 2.3apg and 1.2spg. He helped them to win the Supercup. Cebular also played 6 games in FIBA Europe Cup where he recorded 14.7ppg, 4.3rpg, 3.5apg and 1.3spg. Andrej Zakelj will be the next Slovenian coach in Poland after he signed a one-year contract with the extraklasa Tauron Basket Liga side TBV Startu Lublin. Zakelj made his first steps as a coach with Slovan in 2007 and working as an assistant. After two seasons he moved to Union Olimpija and stayed with the team until the end of the 2014-15 season. USK Praha (NBL) confirmed in their roster Slovenian coach Mirsad Alilovic. Alilovic also coached at USK Praha Blast season. The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others his team won Slovenian Supercup in 2014. Alilovic was selected to Coach Assistant: Slovenian League All-Star Game back in 2011.
