Goran Dragic's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Slovenians playing currently abroad - Mar 9, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Slovenians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is former international point guard Goran Dragic (190-86, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Phoenix Suns (21-41) in their last game. Despite Dragic's very good performance the Phoenix Suns lost 112-121 on the road to the Sacramento Kings. He had a double-double by scoring 17 points and making 16 passes. Dragic also added 4 rebounds and 5 steals in 36 minutes on the court. It's Dragic's first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Dragic averages: 14.1ppg, 2.9rpg, 7.0apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 49.6%, 3FGP: 30.8% and FT: 73.3% in the 60 games he played so far. He played for the Slovenian senior national team two years ago.

Erazem Lorbek

   #2. Second place goes to former international power forward Erazem Lorbek (209-84, college: Michigan St., currently plays in Euroleague). Lorbek led his Spanish team Regal FC Barcelona to a victory over the third-ranked Olympiacos (6-4) 90-77 in the Euroleague last Thursday. He was MVP of the game. Lorbek recorded 21 points. Regal FC Barcelona (9-1) is placed first in group F. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be critical. Lorbek is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Regal FC Barcelona's roster. His overall stats this season are: 9.7ppg, 3.4rpg, 1.1apg, 2FGP: 55.4%(62-112), 3FGP: 54.2%(13-24) and FT: 71.0%. Lorbek played for the Slovenian national team in 2011.

   #3. The Slovenian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international small forward Emir Preldzic (205-87, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Turkey. He was not able to help Fenerbahce Ulker (2-8) in their last game. Despite Preldzic's very good performance the seventh-placed Fenerbahce Ulker lost 85-94 in Tel-Aviv to the higher-ranked (#5) Maccabi T-A in the group F of Euroleague. He was the second best scorer with 15 points. Preldzic also added 7 passes in 23 minutes. It was Fenerbahce Ulker's third consecutive loss in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game is very crucial. Preldzic has been at the team for six years. This season his overall stats are: 8.7ppg, 2.2rpg, 3.3apg, 2FGP: 62.7%(42-67), 3FGP: 34.5% and FT: 71.7% in the 18 games. Preldzic has a dual citizenship: Slovenian and Turkish. Former Triglav Kranj starter played for the Slovenian national team five years ago.

   #4. Power forward Gasper Vidmar (211-87, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Turkey was not able to secure a victory for the league outsider Besiktas (0-10) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance Besiktas (#8) was defeated 83-73 at home by the higher-ranked Caja Laboral (#6) in the group F of Euroleague. Vidmar was the top scorer with 18 points. He also added 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. There are only four games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. So now every game will be important. Vidmar's total stats this season are: 9.2ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.2bpg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2010.

Former international point guard Aleksandar Capin (186-82, also represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Adriatic League) was the main contributor in a Radnicki KG's victory against the closely-ranked Buducnost (15-9) 78-63 in the Adriatic League on Saturday night. Capin was the best player in that game. He scored 23 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Radnicki Kragujevac (15-9) is placed third in the Adriatic League. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Adriatic League Regular Season. So now every game will be extremely important. Capin is currently first on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best passers (first place). This season he has very high stats. Capin averages: 17.5ppg, 2.6rpg, 5.1apg and 1.3spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Slovenian and Serbian. Capin used to play for the Slovenian national team five years ago.

   #6. Point guard Beno Udrih (194-82, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA couldn't help the Orlando Magic (17-46) in their last game. Despite his good performance the Orlando Magic was crushed 115-86 in Indianapolis by the Indiana Pacers. Udrih recorded 12 points and added 7 passes in a mere 18 minutes. This year Udrih's total stats are: 6.6ppg, 1.3rpg and 6.1apg in the eight games. He is a former international player as he played for the Slovenian senior team three years ago.

   #7. Former international point guard Jaka Lakovic (186-78, currently plays in Italy) contributed to a Air Avellino's surprising victory against the fifth-ranked Cantu (13-8) 63-52 in the Italian SerieA last Sunday. Lakovic was the top player that evening. He scored 27 points (!!!), had 4 rebounds and dished 5 assists. Sidigas Avellino (6-14) is placed 14th in the SerieA. This season Lakovic has very high stats. He averages: 15.5ppg, 3.0rpg and 5.8apg. Lakovic used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #8. Forward Marko Milic (201-77, currently plays in Iran) helped Mahram win their game against the closely-ranked Foolad Mahan (15-3) 73-63 in the Iranian Superleague on Friday night. He scored 18 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 36 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Mahram Tehran (14-3) is placed third in the Superleague. Milic is ranked fourth on the list of the top scorers in the league and also on the list of best rebounders (first place). He has very impressive stats this year: 16.4ppg, 9.0rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1spg in the 11 games. Milic used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2006.

Former international power forward Miha Zupan (205-82, currently plays in Turkey) helped Turk Telekom win their game against the closely-ranked Tofas (7-13) 76-70 in the Turkish TBL last Saturday. He scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a mere 19 minutes. Turk Telekom Ankara (6-15) is placed 13th in the TBL. Zupan has relatively good stats this year: 11.5ppg, 6.0rpg and 1.6apg in the 21 games. He used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #10. Center Mirza Begic (217-85, currently plays in Euroleague) managed to help Real Madrid to win in overtime against the sixth-ranked Zalgiris (4-6) 105-104 in the Euroleague on Thursday night. Begic recorded only 2 points. Real Madrid (9-1) is placed first in group E. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Euroleague Top 16. Begic has averaged so far 4.8ppg and 3.1rpg. He is a former international player as two years ago he still played for the Slovenian senior national team.

   #11. Former U20 international point guard Mirza Sarajlija (187-91, currently plays in Serbia) couldn't help Tamis in their game against Borac in the Serbian A League, despite his very good performance in Saturday night's game. Sarajlija was the second best scorer with 16 points. He also added made 3 passes and 4 steals in 33 minutes. But his team lost 72-76. Sarajlija has averaged so far 7.0ppg, 1.7rpg and 1.2spg in the six games. He used to play for the Slovenian U20 national team two years ago.

   #12. Former international forward Dragisa Drobnjak (200-77, another player represented by Beo Basket, currently plays in Belgium) couldn't help Base Oostende in their game against Belfius Mons-Hainaut in the Belgian Ethias League. Drobnjak scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. His team was edged 69-68. Drobnjak has averaged so far 9.5ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.7apg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team back in 2008.

   #13. Former international power forward Uros Slokar (210-83, currently plays in Spain) helped G.Canaria 2014 win their game against the 13th-ranked CB Canarias 78-70 in the Spanish ACB in Sunday night's game. He scored 6 points. Slokar has averaged so far 4.6ppg and 2.6rpg. He used to play for the Slovenian national team two years ago.

   #14. Former U20 international guard Maj Kovacevic (190-90, currently plays in Slovakia) helped Nitra edge in an overtime the tenth-ranked Levice 93-91 in the Slovakian Extraliga last Monday. Kovacevic was the top player that evening. He scored 21 points in 32 minutes. This year Kovacevic has relatively solid stats: 14.2ppg and 1.6rpg in the 26 games. He used to play for the Slovenian U20 national team back in 2010.

   #15. Former international forward Zeljko Zagorac (204-81, currently plays in Hungary) couldn't help Falco-Szova in their game against Albacomp in the Hungarian A Division. Despite his very good performance on Saturday night Zagorac recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 12 rebounds. This season Zagorac has very high stats. He averages: 20.3ppg, 12.5rpg and 1.1spg. Zagorac used to play for the Slovenian national team five years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Slovenian passport but never been selected to any of Slovenian national teams:

   #1. Rasid Mahalbasic (211-C-90, currently plays in Poland) led Asseco Prokom Gdynia to a victory over the seventh-ranked Polpharma (10-12) crushing them 88-64 in the Polish TBL last Friday. Mahalbasic was the best player in that game. He recorded 18 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 20 minutes. Asseco Prokom Gdynia (15-7) is placed third in the TBL. The Regular Season already ended. This year Mahalbasic's total stats are: 8.9ppg and 5.1rpg in the 22 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Austrian and Slovenian.

   #2. Experienced Jure Balazic (204-F-80, currently plays in Turkey) was the main contributor in Erdemir's victory against one of league's weakest teams Antalya (4-17) crushing them 77-50 in the Turkish TBL in Saturday night's game. He was the top player that evening. Balazic recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals. Erdemirspor Eregli (8-13) is placed eighth in the TBL. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. Balazic has relatively good stats this season: 11.6ppg and 5.4rpg.

   #3. Nejc Strnad (190-PG-83, currently plays in Greece) contributed to Ikaros' victory against one of league's weakest teams Peristeri GS (5-14) 88-79 in the Greek A1 on Saturday night. Strnad recorded 13 points and had 3 steals in a mere 17 minutes. Ikaros Kallitheas (8-11) is placed eighth in the A1. This year Strnad averages only 3.1ppg in the 18 games.

   #4. Damir Zeleznik (185-G-80, currently plays in Austria) contributed to a Xion Dukes' victory against the closely-ranked BC Vienna (8-8) 92-79 in the Austrian A Bundesliga in Friday night's game. He recorded 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in 27 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Xion Dukes Klosterneuburg (16-8) is placed fourth in the A Bundesliga. Zeleznik has averaged so far 8.2ppg, 2.7rpg, 3.5apg and 1.1spg in the 22 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenian.

   #5. Rene Zvan (182-PG-87, currently plays in Slovakia) managed to help BK Edymax SPU Nitra to win against the closely-ranked Inter Bratislava (16-15) 97-86 in the Slovakian Extraliga on Wednesday night. Zvan scored only 2 points, made 3 passes and 3 steals. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. BK Edymax SPU Nitra (19-11) is placed third in the Extraliga. His team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. Zvan has averaged so far 3.7ppg, 1.3rpg and 2.2apg.

   #6. Uros Benacek (206-C-92, currently plays in Czech Republic), who plays in the Czech Republic NBL could not help BC Kolin to beat CEZ Nymburk. He cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. Benacek recorded only 2 points in 22 minutes. His team was crushed by 43 points 108-65. Benacek has averaged so far 4.0ppg and 1.7rpg in the 23 games.

Hopsi erase 18-point deficit, Olimpija so close from shameful loss - 2 days ago
Hopsi rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat Tajfun 77-75 and Union Olimpija almost lost to 10th placed Terme Olimia. Hopsi-Tajfun 77-75: Hopsi trailed by 18 points late in the second quarter and never led more than three points, but it was enough to earn their 13th win of the season and now is one step away from advancing to the Championship stage. Tajfun Sentjur added another new player to their roster by inking Tomaz Jereb (192-G-91) until June 2019. Jereb arrives from League Two (2SKL) side Konjice, where he averaged 18.5 points (ranked second), 5.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists (ranked second), 2.9 steals and 0.5 blocks in 15 games this season.
