Real Madrid and F.C. Barcelona Regal make it to the final - Feb 18, 2012

Erazem
Lorbek
Real Madrid and F.C. Barcelona Regal will face each other to fight for the Spanish King's Cup on Sunday afternoon after beating Banca Civica Seville and Caja Laboral respectively in semifinals. The whites displayed a great offensive game against one of the best defensive teams of the Liga Endesa ACB, showing an incredible accuracy from behind the arc (14/25). Meanwhile, Barcelona managed to qualify for the final following the opposite way; deffense. They suffocated Caja Laboral in the last quarter, allowing only 5 points from the Basques behind a top performance by Erazem Lorbek (209-F/C-84, college: Michigan St.). The big question now is, which style will prevail? Offense or deffense? Tomorrow we will know the answer.

The first team to advance to the final was F.C. Barcelona. Supported by their fans, the hosts were able to overcome a powerful beginning by Caja Laboral. Led by Maciej Lampe (210-C-85) (8 points in the first period), the Basques enjoyed short differences in the early beginning. San Emeterio and Milko Bjelica (207-C-84, agency: Beo Basket) joined Lampe later, as Caja Laboral controlled the boards to prevent Barcelona from feeling comfortable. Navarro, who didn't start the game, couldn't produce against the great deffensive effort of Caja Laboral, while only Lorbek showed capable to support the hosts. Things got even worse for Barcelona after halftime, when Caja Laboral amassed a 4-point lead (48-52) at the end of the third quarter. The hosts reacted well, though. They took nerves off themselves and increased their deffensive intensity to keep Caja Laboral scoreless for 6 minutes. Chuck Eidson (202-F/G-80, agency: Court Side, college: S.Carolina) also showed up to join Lorbek in the offensive end, scoring and feeding their teammates. Cala Laboral couldn't find its key players. as San Emeterio, Teletovic and Bjelica lost strenght and accuracy. Even though Nemanja Bjelica (209-F/C-88, agency: Interperformances) nailed a big three to bring his team within 5 (62-57) with 3 minutes eft, it meant nothing in the end as Lorbej immediately answered from downtown to abort the rally. The Slovenian forward finished with 26 points, his top scoring mark in Spain, being the only Barcelona player in double-figures. Teletovic, with 15 points, led Caja Laboral as San Emeterio and Lampe had 12 and 10 respectively.

Later, Real Madrid needed to break the game twice to be able to send home Banca Civica. Pablo Laso's team showed a high-quality offensive game in the first 11 minutes (30-14), bulding a solid advantage behind a great shooting accuracy. The Andalusians, renowned for their good deffensive performance, found no tools to keep Real Madrid off balance in the beginning. The whites relaxed a little bit then, something too dangerous when you are playing a Cup semifinal. As such, Banca Civica found some breath coming from behind the arc and completed consecutive 0-8 runs that brought them back into the game (40-41) right before halftime. Game was alive at that point, but the whites recovered their momentum after intermision behind Mirotic' three-pointers and capped a terrifice 27-6 run to gain a 20-point lead (67-47) after 26 minutes. The outcome seemd to be sealed, but it was far from being real. Once again, the Andalusians showed pride, and never surrendered. Step by step, improving deffense and hitting some key three-pointers, Joan Plaza's team rallied back again and came within 83-76, with almost three minutes to play. It was Mirotic, who else, who came up big with another three to give some calm to the whites and avoid further trouble. Banca Civica fought until the end, but there was no time to complete the comeback. Nikola Mirotic (207-F/C-91) was the man of the game with 21 points and 6 three-pointers, as Sergio Llull (190-PG-87) helped him with 17 and 7 assists. Bogdanovic, with 13, was the top scorer of Banca Civica, while Juan Triguero (208-C-83), Carl English (192-G-81, college: Hawaii) and Earl Calloway (191-G-83, college: Indiana) also scored in double figures.

Boxscores:

F.C. Barcelona Regal 66 - Caja Laboral 57
Real Madrid 92 - Banca Civica 84
