The most important game in the last round took place in Mahon between second ranked Menorca Basquet (17-9) and seventh ranked Ford Burgos (16-10) on Saturday night. Menorca Basquet was defeated by Ford Burgos in a tough game at home 68-72. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Menorca Basquet. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 22-8. But Menorca Basquet won second period 25-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. British-American forward Darren Phillip (201-78, college: Fairfield) orchestrated the victory by scoring 4 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Rafael Huertas (189-84, agency: Court Side) contributed with 16 points for the winners. Center Oliver Arteaga (211-83) replied with 6 points and 14 rebounds for Menorca Basquet. Menorca Basquet's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Ford Burgos moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Lleida and Navarra. Menorca Basquet at the other side keeps the second position with nine games lost. They share it with La Palma. Ford Burgos is looking forward to face league's leader Canarias in Tenerife in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Menorca Basquet will play on the road against Melilla Baloncesto and is hoping to win this game.
LEB Gold top team - Canarias (20-5) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat seventeenth ranked CB Granada (6-20) in Tenerife 88-77. Guard Jaime Heras (193-82) scored 14 points and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Jakim Donaldson chipped in 8 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. Canarias' coach Alejandro Martinez used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international center Jesus Fernandez (204-75) responded with a double-double by scoring 29 points and 10 rebounds. Canarias maintains first position with 20-5 record. CB Granada lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the seventeenth place with 20 games lost. Canarias will play against Ford Burgos (#6) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. CB Granada will play against UB La Palma (#3) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Melilla Baloncesto (15-10) and Leche Rio Breogan (13-13), which took place in Lugo. Higher ranked Melilla Baloncesto lost to tenth ranked Leche Rio Breogan in a road game 67-71 on Saturday. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Melilla Baloncesto. Brooks Sales notched a double-double by scoring 12 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort. Even a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists by Jose Salvador Arco did not help to save the game for Melilla Baloncesto. Leche Rio Breogan moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Knet Clavijo and Girona. Loser Melilla Baloncesto dropped to the seventh position with ten games lost. Leche Rio Breogan will meet bottom-ranked Clinicas Rincon (#18) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Melilla Baloncesto will play against the league's second-placed Menorca Basquet (#2) and will have a slim chance for a victory.
Another upset was a game between Girona FC (13-13) and Palencia Baloncesto (12-13), which took place in Palencia. Higher ranked Girona FC lost to thirteenth ranked Palencia Baloncesto in a road game 65-80. The best player for the winners was Ian O'Leary who had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. Palencia Baloncesto's coach Nacho Lezkano allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Palencia Baloncesto moved-up to eleventh place, which they share with Leon. Girona FC at the other side keeps the eighth position with 13 games lost. Palencia Baloncesto's next round opponent will be Caceres 2016 (#13) on the road.
The game between sixth ranked Grupo Iruna Navarra (16-10) and 18th ranked Clinicas Rincon (4-22) in Pamplona on Friday ended with biggest points difference. Grupo Iruna Navarra outscored guests from Malaga 75-53. Jorge Garcia orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Grupo Iruna Navarra moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Burgos and Lleida. Clinicas Rincon lost third consecutive game. They stay dead last with 22 lost games.
