Bottom-ranked Blancos de Rueda managed to get a fifth victory, breaking the six-game losing streak on Saturday night. This time they won against fourth-ranked Meridiano Alicante in Valladolid 69-57. The hosts trailed by 4 points after three quarters before their 27-11 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Blancos de Rueda outrebounded Meridiano Alicante 37-21 including a 25-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. American center Curtis Borchardt (211-80, college: Stanford, agency: Pro One Sports) had a double-double by scoring 10 points and 15 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Argentinian guard Diego Garcia (190-79) chipped in 15 points and 6 assists during the contest. At the losing side Bulgarian forward Kaloyan Ivanov (205-86) responded with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Meridiano Alicante's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Blancos de Rueda maintains eighteenth position with 5-17 record. Meridiano Alicante lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth place with nine games lost. They share the position with Unicaja. Blancos de Rueda are looking forward to face league's second-placed Real Madrid on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Meridiano Alicante will play against Valencia Basket and is hoping to win this game.
ACB top team - Regal FC Barcelona (19-3) added another victory to their record. This time they beat eighth ranked Gescrap BB (11-11) in Bilbao 72-65. Slovenian power forward Erazem Lorbek (209-84, college: Michigan St.) notched 15 points to lead the effort and Juan Carlos Navarro supported him with 7 points and 6 assists. Even 22 points by Greek swingman Kostas Vasiliadis (200-84, agency: FCM) did not help to save the game for Gescrap BB. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Regal FC Barcelona have an impressive eight-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 19-3 record. Gescrap BB at the other side keeps the eighth place with 11 games lost. They share the position with 3 other teams. Regal FC Barcelona will play against Cajasol (#9) in Sevilla in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Gescrap BB will play on the road against FIATC Joventut in Badalona and hopes to get back on the winning track.
The game in Valencia was also quite interesting. Third ranked Caja Laboral (16-6) played at the court of 6th ranked Valencia Basket (11-11). Caja Laboral managed to secure a 5-point victory 68-63 on Saturday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Valencia Basket. Mirza Teletovic fired 21 points for the winners. Nando De Colo produced 14 points for lost side. Valencia Basket's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Caja Laboral maintains third position with 16-6 record having just three points less than leader FCB Regal. Loser Valencia Basket dropped to the eighth place with 11 games lost. They share the position with 3 other teams. Caja Laboral will meet at home CAI Zaragoza (#7) in the next round. Valencia Basket will play against Meridiano Alicante and hope to secure a win.
An interesting game took place in Zaragoza where higher ranked Unicaja Malaga (13-9) was upset on the court of ninth ranked CAI Zaragoza (12-10) 76-59. Worth to mention a great performance of Bracey Wright who helped to win the game recording 24 points. CAI Zaragoza's coach Jose Luis Abos allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. CAI Zaragoza moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Lagun Aro GBC. Unicaja Malaga at the other side keeps the fourth position with nine games lost. CAI Zaragoza's next round opponent will be higher ranked Caja Laboral (#3) in Vitoria and it may be quite challenging game. Unicaja Malaga will play at home against Lagun Aro GBC in San Sebastian and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Seventh ranked Lagun Aro GBC (12-10) crushed at home 16th ranked Asefa Estudiantes (6-16) by 22 points 103-81, which is the biggest margin this round on Sunday night. Sergi Vidal scored 24 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners. Lagun Aro GBC's coach Alfonso Alonso felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Lagun Aro GBC moved-up to sixth place, which they share with CAI Zaragoza. Asefa Estudiantes lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the sixteenth position with 16 games lost.
