Pau Gasol's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Spaniards playing currently abroad - Nov 28, 2012

We bring you last week's top performances from Spaniards who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Pau Gasol

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Pau Gasol (213-80, currently plays in NBA). Gasol led Los Angeles Lakers to a victory against the Brooklyn Nets (9-4) 95-90 in the NBA last Tuesday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 11 rebounds. Gasol also added 7 assists. The Los Angeles Lakers have 7-8 record this season. But the season just started, so everything may happen. It's Gasol's fifth year with the team. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Gasol averages: 13.1ppg, 9.1rpg, 3.3apg, 1.3bpg, 2FGP: 42.9%, 3FGP: 28.6% and FT: 75.9%. He is currently a member of the Spanish senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Marc Gasol (216-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA). Gasol was the major contributor in a Memphis Grizzlies' victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers (3-12) 84-78 in the NBA on Monday night. He scored 19 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 37 minutes. The Memphis Grizzlies have quite an impressive 10-2 record this season. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Gasol is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in Grizzlies' roster. Gasol has very impressive stats this season: 15.3ppg, 6.9rpg, 4.8apg, 1.3bpg, 2FGP: 52.5% and FT: 90.9%(60-66) in the 12 games he played so far. He is in the roster of the Spanish senior national team.

   #3. The Spanish player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Serge Ibaka (208-89, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. Ibaka could not help the Oklahoma City Thunder (11-4) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance the Oklahoma City Thunder was defeated 108-100 on the road by the Boston Celtics. Ibaka recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. This season Ibaka has very high stats. He averages: 14.5ppg, 7.6rpg, 2.9bpg and FT: 88.1%. Ibaka has a dual citizenship: Congolese and Spanish. Ex-C.B. L'Hospitalet player is also a member of the Spanish senior national team.

   #4. Point guard Jose Manuel Calderon (192-81, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA was not able to help the Toronto Raptors (3-12) in their last game. Despite his good performance the Toronto Raptors lost 98-106 in Philadelphia to the 76ers. Calderon had a double-double by scoring 13 points and making 12 passes. He also added 5 rebounds in 37 minutes. It was Raptors' fifth consecutive loss in a row. Calderon has been at the team for eight years. Calderon belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #7 with 7.8apg. This year he also averages: 10.3ppg and 2.1rpg in the 15 games. Calderon is also Spanish national team player.

   #5. Former international center Albert Miralles (208-82, also represented by Interperformances, currently plays in Euroleague) contributed to an ALBA Berlin's victory against the closely-ranked Chalon/Saor (2-5) 87-82 in the Euroleague last Thursday. Miralles recorded 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 17 minutes. ALBA Berlin (3-4) is placed fourth in group B. They ended the series of four consecutive loses. There are only three games left until the end of the Euroleague Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Miralles' overall stats are: 6.4ppg and 4.9rpg in the seven games. He used to play for the Spanish national team seven years ago.

   #6. Power forward Victor Claver (207-88, currently plays in NBA) was not able to secure a victory for the Portland Trail Blazers (6-8) in their game against the Phoenix Suns (7-8) in the NBA. Claver cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 1 points. The Portland Trail Blazers were crushed 114-87 in Phoenix by the Suns. This season Claver averages just 0.3ppg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Spanish National Team roster.

   #7. Former U18 international point guard Miguel Ortega (188-91, currently plays in Denmark) couldn't help Randers (3-9) in their game against Aarhus BC (5-7) in the Danish Ligaen. Despite his very good performance in Wednesday night's game He scored 17 points, had 7 boards, passed 3 assists and added 4 steals. Ortega belongs to league's best passers (ranked #2) and also on the list of most steals (fourth place). He has very reliable stats this season: 14.3ppg, 4.3rpg, 6.1apg and 2.1spg. Ortega used to play for the Spanish U18 national team three years ago.

   #8. Point guard Salvador Camps (178-79, currently plays in Ireland) contributed to an easy victory against one of league's weakest teams Killester (3-7) crushing them 79-58 in the Irish Superleague in Saturday night's game. Camps had a double-double by scoring 13 points and making 10 passes. He also added 5 rebounds and 6 steals in 28 minutes. Moycullen Galway (3-5) is placed fourth in the Superleague. Camps is currently second on the league's list of best passers and also on the list of most steals (first place). This year his total stats are: 9.8ppg, 3.2rpg, 7.4apg and 3.0spg in the five games. Camps used to play for the Spanish national team back in 2001.

   #9. Former U20 international guard Francisco Robles (195-81, currently plays in United Kingdom) managed to help Bristol Acadamy Flyers to win against the 12th-ranked Westminster Warriors (1-3) 77-74 in the British EBL D1 (second division) last Saturday. He scored 5 points and added 6 passes. Bristol Acadamy Flyers (5-1) is placed second in the EBL D1. It's Robles' first season with the team. Robles has averaged so far 9.0ppg, 1.7rpg and 3.0apg. He used to play for the Spanish U20 national team twelve years ago.

   #10. Guard Daniel Munoz (183-87, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the American in their game against the Florida Atlantic University (0-0) in the NCAA. Munoz recorded only 4 points and added 4 passes in 40 minutes. The American was edged 56-55 in Boca Raton, FL by the Florida Atlantic University. Munoz plays fourth season for the team. He has averaged so far 9.0ppg, 1.7rpg and 3.0apg in the three games. Munoz is a former U17 international player as nine years ago he still played for the Spanish national team.

   #1. Tiago Splitter (211-C/F-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA) was the major contributor in a San Antonio Spurs' victory against the Washington Wizards (0-12) crushing them 118-92 in the NBA in Monday night's game. He had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 12 rebounds. Splitter also added 7 assists and 2 blocks in 23 minutes. The San Antonio Spurs have quite an impressive 12-3 record this season. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Splitter has relatively good stats this year: 8.1ppg, 4.1rpg and 1.1apg in the 15 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Brazilian and Spanish.

   #2. Gustavo Barrera (194-G-85, currently plays in Uruguay) led Hebraica to a victory over the ninth-ranked Olimpia (10-11) 90-86 in a derby game in the Uruguayan LUB on Saturday night. He was MVP of the game. Barrera scored 28 points (!!!), had 5 rebounds and dished 7 assists. Hebraica Macabi (14-8) is placed fifth in Capital group. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Barrera is the league's best passer and also on the list of most steals (fourth place). He has very reliable stats this season: 12.4ppg, 4.0rpg, 7.2apg and 2.0spg. Barrera is another player who holds two passports: Spanish and Uruguayan.

   #3. Caio Silveira (211-C-87, also represented by Interperformances, currently plays in Brazil) contributed to an easy victory against the 12th-ranked Vila Velha (1-1) crushing them 82-61 in the Brazilian NBB in Saturday night's game. He recorded 21 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 27 minutes. It was his first game for Flamengo this season. His team is placed first in the NBB. So far his team won all six games in the Regular Season. Silveira has both Spanish and Brazilian nationalities.

   #4. Luis Scola (206-F/C-80, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a Phoenix Suns' victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers (3-12) 91-78 in the NBA last Tuesday. He recorded 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. The Phoenix Suns have 7-8 record this season. It's Scola's first year with the team. Scola has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 13.1ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.7apg. Scola also holds two passports: Argentinian and Spanish.

   #5. Experienced Carlos Cherry (184-PG-79, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in France) was the main contributor in a Quimper UJAP's victory against the 12th-ranked Saint Chamond (3-6) 86-77 in the French NM1 (third division) on Saturday night. He was MVP of the game. Cherry recorded 28 points (!!!), 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals in 34 minutes. Quimper UJAP (6-3) is placed fifth in the NM1. It's Cherry's first season with the team. Cherry belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #7 with 5.0apg. This year his other stats are: 12.8ppg, 3.9rpg and 2.0spg in the eight games.

   #6. Sergi Coll (204-F/C-82, currently plays in Portugal) helped Ovarense win their game against the closely-ranked Vitoria SC 93-85 in the Portuguese LPB in Sunday night's game. Coll scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. He has relatively good stats this season: 12.5ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.8apg and 1.5spg.

   #7. Ignacio Ordin (183-PG-78, currently plays in France) helped Pau-Lacq-Orthez win their n overtime game against the 11th-ranked Saint-Quentin 101-98 in the French ProB (second division) on Friday night. Ordin scored 19 points. Ordin's total stats this season are: 8.6ppg, 2.1rpg and 3.5apg.

   #8. Rodrigo Riera (184-G-72, currently plays in Uruguay) helped Cordon win their game against the fifth-ranked Hebraica 93-83 in a derby game in the Uruguayan LUB in Wednesday night's game. He scored 16 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line) in 39 minutes. This year Riera's total stats are: 7.1ppg, 2.7rpg and 2.5apg in the 18 games. He has dual citizenship: Spanish and Uruguayan.

   #9. Jose Manuel Coego (204-C/F-78, currently plays in Portugal), who plays in the Portuguese LPB could not help CAB Madeira (2-2) in their last game. Despite Coego's good performance CAB Madeira was edged 72-69 at home by the lower-ranked (#7) Sampaense. He scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in only a mere 14 minutes. This year Coego's total stats are: 5.5ppg and 5.3rpg in the four games.

   #10. Pablo Ibon (201-F-76, currently plays in Uruguay) was not able to help Aguada in their game against Bohemios in the Uruguayan LUB. He scored 9 points and added 3 assists in 25 minutes. His team lost 83-96. This year Ibon's total stats are: 4.7ppg and 1.6rpg in the 20 games. He holds both Spanish and Uruguayan passports.

Movistar Estudiantes (Liga Endesa) signed experienced 34-year old American forward Dylan Page (204-104kg-82, college: Wisc.-Milwaukee). He played this summer at Capitanes de Arecibo in Puerto Rican BSN league, but left. In three Liga Americas games he had 7.0ppg, 3.0rpg and 1.0apg. Planasa Navarra de Pamplona (LEB Silver) re-signed experienced 35-year old guard Inaki Narros (196-81). He has played there for the last two seasons.
