LFB Round 9: Top-ranked Rivas Ecopolis win another game - Dec 8, 2012

Coincidentally all hosts won their games. The round 9 was rather routine as all games ended with very predictable results.

LFB top team - Rivas Ecopolis (9-0) had no problems winning another game on Saturday. This time they crushed eleventh ranked Socinsa Bembibre (1-7) 63-42. The game was mostly controlled by Rivas Ecopolis. Socinsa Bembibre managed to win fourth quarter 12-9. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Socinsa Bembibre to just 4 points in third quarter. 24 personal fouls committed by Socinsa Bembibre helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for international center Laura Nicholls (189-89, agency: Josep and Nicolas) who led her team to a victory with 7 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. International point guard Anna Cruz (173-86, agency: Josep and Nicolas) contributed with 16 points for the winners. Rivas Ecopolis' coach Miguel Mendez felt very confident using 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American center Britany Miller (193-87, college: Florida St.) answered with 10 points and 8 rebounds for Socinsa Bembibre. Undefeated Rivas Ecopolis have an impressive series of nine victories in a row. They maintain first place with 9-0 record. Socinsa Bembibre lost third consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay at the bottom position with seven games lost. Rivas Ecopolis will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Socinsa Bembibre will play at home against Caja Rural (#4) in Zamora and is hoping to prove to their supporters that they can break losing series.
The game between fourth ranked Caja Rural (5-4) and 8th ranked Gran Canaria (3-5) in Zamora ended with biggest points difference. Caja Rural outscored guests from Las Palmas 81-60. Belgian Kim Mestdagh (179-90, college: Colorado St.) stepped up and scored 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and Mariona Ortiz chipped in 12 points and 4 assists. The best for the losing side was international power forward Vanessa Ble (190-91) with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Newly promoted Caja Rural maintains fourth place with 5-4 record. Gran Canaria at the other side dropped to the sixth position with five games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Caja Rural will play against bottom-ranked Socinsa Bembibre (#11) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Gran Canaria will play against the league's second-placed Perfumerias Avenida (#2) in Salamanca and hopes to get back on the winning track.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 9: UNB Obenasa was beaten by Cadi ICG S. on the road 71-66. Uni Girona won against Burgos on its own court 66-53. Conquero unfortunately lost to Perfumerias in Salamanca 66-74.
The most impressive performance of 9th round was 24 points and 9 rebounds by Astou Traore of Cadi ICG S..



Cadi ICG S. - UNB Obenasa 71-66

There was a small surprise when ninth ranked Cadi ICG S. (3-5) beat 7th ranked Navarra Pamplona (3-5) in Seu D'urgell 71-66. Navarra Pamplona was ahead by 3 points at the halftime before a 27-12 third quarter run of Cadi ICG S.. They dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Navarra Pamplona's 24. Senegalese power forward Astou Traore (182-81, agency: Josep and Nicolas) stepped up and scored 24 points and 9 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners and American swingman Aja Parham (183-84, college: Boston Coll.) chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds. Cadi ICG S.'s coach Andreu Bou allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The best for the losing side was Latvian power forward Aija Putnina (191-88, agency: Josep and Nicolas) with 24 points and 7 rebounds and point guard Maria Asurmendi (168-86) scored 12 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Five Navarra Pamplona players scored in double figures. Cadi ICG S. moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated Navarra Pamplona. Navarra Pamplona lost their fifth game in a row. Cadi ICG S. will play against Jopisa Burgos (#6) on the road in the next round. Navarra Pamplona will play against Hondarribia-Irun and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Uni Girona - Burgos 66-53

Rather expected game when 6th ranked Jopisa Burgos (3-5) lost on the road to third ranked Argon Uni Girona (6-2) 66-53. It looked good early as Jopisa Burgos took an 1-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Argon Uni Girona had a 22-6 second period charge getting the lead and Jopisa Burgos was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 53-66. Argon Uni Girona dominated on the defensive end, holding Jopisa Burgos to just 6 points in second quarter. They outrebounded Jopisa Burgos 36-21 including a 28-12 advantage in defensive rebounds. American center Cierra Bravard (193-89, college: Florida St.) stepped up and scored 18 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and her fellow American import power forward Jacinta Monroe (193-88, college: Florida St.) chipped in 13 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Argon Uni Girona's coach Anna Caula allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was center Laura Gil (190-92, agency: Josep and Nicolas) with 10 points and 8 rebounds and point guard Anna Gomez (179-86, agency: Josep and Nicolas) scored 12 points. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Argon Uni Girona. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Perfumerias. Jopisa Burgos lost their fourth game in a row. Newly promoted team keeps the sixth position with five games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Argon Uni Girona will play against Conquero (#10) in Huelva in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Jopisa Burgos will play at home against Cadi ICG S. (#8) in Seu D'urgell and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Perfumerias - Conquero 74-66

Very predictable result when second ranked Perfumerias Avenida (6-2) won against 10th ranked Conquero (2-6) in Salamanca 74-66. It looked good early as Conquero took an 10-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Perfumerias Avenida had a 24-7 second period charge getting the lead and Conquero was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 66-74. Perfumerias Avenida dominated on the defensive end, holding Conquero to just 7 points in second quarter. They outrebounded Conquero 43-19 including a 30-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. International point guard Marta Xargay Casademont (181-90, agency: Josep and Nicolas) stepped up and scored 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and the former international swingman Marta Fernandez (178-81) chipped in 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The best for the losing side was Polish power forward Joanna Walich (183-81) with 34 points (!!!) and the former international point guard Lidia Mirchandani (172-76) scored 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. The victory was the third consecutive win for Perfumerias Avenida. They maintain second place with 6-2 record having four points less than leader Rivas Ecopolis, which they share with Uni Girona. Newly promoted Conquero keeps the tenth position with six games lost. Perfumerias Avenida will play against Gran Canaria (#9) in Las Palmas in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Conquero will play at home against Argon Uni Girona and hopes to get back on the winning track.

The game without a history. Caja Rural led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Gran Canaria's players. Belgian Kim Mestdagh (179-90, college: Colorado St.) stepped up and scored 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and point guard Mariona Ortiz (182-92) chipped in 12 points and 4 assists.
