LEB Gold Round 12: Meridiano Alicante beats Palencia Baloncesto in the most crucial game of the week - Dec 23, 2012

There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Alicante. Third ranked Meridiano Alicante faced one of their biggest challengers Palencia Baloncesto. Host Meridiano Alicante (8-4) defeated guests from Palencia (7-5) 77-59. The game without a history. Meridiano Alicante led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. The best player for the winners was the former international center Jesus Fernandez (204-75) who scored 14 points and 5 rebounds. point guard Albert Sabat (187-85) chipped in 10 points and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was swingman Carles Bravo (193-79) who recorded 13 points and 4 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Meridiano Alicante maintains third position with 8-4 record having just three points less than leader Andorra. Palencia Baloncesto at the other side keeps the fourth place with five games lost. They share the position with Breogan. Meridiano Alicante are looking forward to face Caceres Basket (#12) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Palencia Baloncesto will play against Melilla Baloncesto (#13) and is hoping to prove to their fans that the loss was just an accident.
Bottom-ranked Melilla Baloncesto managed to get a third victory. This time they won against eighth-ranked Planasa NV 88-73. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 15-point difference suggests that Melilla Baloncesto is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Planasa NV. It was a good game for German power forward Kiril Wachsmann (203-83, college: Iona, agency: Edge Sports) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 16 rebounds. Jose Antonio Marco contributed with 16 points and 9 assists for the winners. Melilla Baloncesto's coach Gonzalo Garcia allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Lithuanian forward Vaidotas Volkus (202-85, college: Redlands CC) replied with 19 points for Planasa NV. Melilla Baloncesto (3-9) moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with Ourense. Planasa NV at the other side dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. They share it with 4 other teams. Melilla Baloncesto will play against higher ranked Palencia Baloncesto (#4) on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Planasa NV will play against Ourense and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Leader River Andorra delivered the eleventh victory on Friday night. This time they beat 9th ranked Lleida Basquet (5-7) 76-67. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Lleida Basquet. Worth to mention a quality performance of Devin Wright who helped to win the game recording 11 points and 9 rebounds. The best for the losing side was Sergi Pino with 17 points. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. River Andorra have a solid four-game winning streak. Newly promoted River Andorra maintains first position with 11-1 record. Loser Lleida Basquet dropped to the seventh place with seven games lost. They share the position with 4 other teams. River Andorra will meet at home league's second-placed Ford Burgos in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Lleida Basquet will play against Leyma Basquet (#6) in Coruna and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very interesting game took place in Huesca. It ended with only three-point defeat on the road of higher ranked CB Clavijo (5-7) to twelfth ranked Lobe Huesca (5-7) 66-63 in the fight for the seventh place. The winners were led by Jamar Samuels who scored that evening 16 points and 8 rebounds. Lobe Huesca moved-up to seventh place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated CB Clavijo. CB Clavijo lost third consecutive game. Lobe Huesca's next round opponent will be FCB Regal II (#11) in Barcelona.
We should mention about the upset which took place in Ourense, where higher ranked Leyma Basquet (6-6) lost to fourteenth ranked Ourense (3-9) in a road game 58-70 on Friday. The best player for the winners was Mateo Kedzo who scored 12 points and 7 rebounds. Leyma Basquet's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Ourense moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with Melilla. Leyma Basquet at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keeps the sixth position with six games lost. Ourense will face higher ranked Planasa NV (#8) in Pamplona in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.

In the last two games of round 12 FCB Regal II was defeated by A.Ford Burgos in a road game 87-72. Breogan beat Caceres at home 69-64.
The best stats of 12th round was 19 points and 16 rebounds by Lucas Sikma of A.Ford Burgos.
