ACB Round 15: Regal FC Barcelona hands first loss to Real Madrid - Dec 30, 2012

The most surprising game was the first loss of undefeated Real Madrid (14-1) on the court of tenth ranked Regal FC Barcelona on Sunday night. Visitors were defeated by Regal FC Barcelona 96-89. It ended at the same time the 14-game winning streak of Real Madrid. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 23-20. But Real Madrid won second period 24-22. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Real Madrid 31-20 including 22 on the defensive glass. Regal FC Barcelona shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 57.1 percentage. It was a good game for international guard Juan Carlos Navarro (192-80) who led his team to a victory with 33 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds (perfect behind the arc making all five shots). American forward Pete Mickeal (199-78, college: Cincinnati) contributed with 15 points for the winners. International Rudy Fernandez (198-85) answered with 18 points and 5 rebounds for Real Madrid. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Defending champion (8-7) moved-up to seventh place, which they share with 3 other teams. Real Madrid at the other side still keeps top position with one game lost. Regal FC Barcelona is looking forward to face bottom-ranked Lagun Aro GBC (#18) in San Sebastian in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Real Madrid will play at home against FIATC Joventut (#11) in Badalona and is hoping to win this game.
The game in Zaragoza was also worth to mention about. 4th placed Gescrap BB (10-5) played at the court of sixth ranked CAI Zaragoza (9-6). CAI Zaragoza managed to secure a 7-point victory 81-74. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Gescrap BB. It was a great evening for Croatian forward Damjan Rudez (208-86) who led his team to a victory scoring 24 points and 5 rebounds. Henk Norel helped adding 16 points and 5 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American power forward Lamont Hamilton (208-84, college: St.John's) with 23 points. Gescrap BB's coach Fotis Katsikaris rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. CAI Zaragoza maintains sixth place with 9-6 record. Gescrap BB at the other side dropped to the fifth position with five games lost. CAI Zaragoza will play against Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (#15) in Madrid in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Gescrap BB will play on the road against Valencia Basket (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Tenerife between CB Canarias and Assignia Manresa. Fourteenth ranked CB Canarias (5-10) got a very close home victory over 17th ranked Assignia Manresa (2-13). CB Canarias managed to escape with a 3-point win 81-78 on Saturday evening. It was an exceptional evening for Jakim Donaldson who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 18 rebounds. Troy DeVries came up with 16 points and 6 rebounds for Assignia Manresa in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Newly promoted CB Canarias maintains fourteenth place with 5-10 record. Loser Assignia Manresa keeps the seventeenth position with 13 games lost. They share it with Lagun Aro GBC. CB Canarias will meet at home higher ranked UCAM Murcia (#12) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Assignia Manresa will play against Cajasol (#16) in Sevilla and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Blancos de Rueda (6-9) and Cajasol (4-11), which took place in Sevilla. 13th ranked Blancos de Rueda was outleveled in a road game by sixteenth ranked Cajasol 94-57. The best player for the winners was Luka Bogdanovic who scored 20 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cajasol moved-up to fifteenth place, which they share with Mad-Croc. Blancos de Rueda lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the twelfth position with nine games lost. Cajasol's next round opponent will be Assignia Manresa (#17) at home.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 15: FIATC Joventut was smashed by G.Canaria 2014 on the road 80-50. UCAM Murcia was destroyed by Asefa Estudian. on its own court 68-91. Unicaja unfortunately lost to Valencia in a road game 64-82. Caja Laboral managed to beat Mad-Croc at home 84-77.
