Serge Ibaka's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Spaniards playing currently abroad - Jan 2, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Spaniards who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Serge Ibaka (208-89, currently plays in NBA). He was the major contributor in an overtime Oklahoma City Thunder's victory against the Dallas Mavericks (13-19) 111-105 in the NBA last Thursday. Ibaka recorded a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 17 rebounds. He also added 5 blocks. The Oklahoma City Thunder has quite an impressive 24-6 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Ibaka has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 14.3ppg, 8.5rpg, 3.0bpg, 2FGP: 58.0%(174-300), 3FGP: 29.4% and FT: 82.3%. Ibaka has a dual citizenship: Congolese and Spanish. Ex-C.B. L'Hospitalet player is currently a member of the Spanish senior national team.

Marc Gasol

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Marc Gasol (216-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Memphis Grizzlies (19-9) in their last game. Despite Gasol's very good performance the Memphis Grizzlies lost 89-99 on the road to the Philadelphia 76ers. He was the second best scorer with 18 points. Gasol also added 8 boards, handed out 8 passes and blocked 2 shots in 38 minutes. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Gasol's fifth year with the team. He has very impressive stats this season: 14.3ppg, 7.5rpg, 3.9apg, 1.8bpg, 2FGP: 50.3% and FT: 88.0% in the 28 games he played so far. Gasol is in the roster of the Spanish senior national team.

   #3. The Spanish player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced international power forward Pau Gasol (213-80, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He was not able to help the Los Angeles Lakers (15-16) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Gasol's very good performance the Los Angeles Lakers were defeated 126-114 in Denver by the Nuggets. He was the second best scorer with 19 points. Gasol also added 6 boards, handed out 5 passes and blocked 2 shots. Gasol is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in Lakers' roster. This season he has very high stats. Gasol averages: 12.7ppg, 8.7rpg, 4.0apg, 1.4bpg, 2FGP: 42.1%, 3FGP: 36.8% and FT: 74.7%. He is also a member of the Spanish senior national team.

   #4. Point guard Jose Manuel Calderon (192-81, currently plays in NBA) led Toronto Raptors to an easy victory against the Orlando Magic (12-19) crushing them 123-88 in the NBA on Saturday night. Calderon recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and making 10 passes. The Toronto Raptors have 11-20 record this season. Calderon has been at the team for eight years. He is currently sixth on the list of best passers. Calderon has very reliable stats this season: 10.3ppg, 2.7rpg and 7.6apg. He is also Spanish national team player.

Former international center Albert Miralles (208-82, also represented by Interperformances, currently plays in Euroleague), who plays in Germany was not able to secure a victory for ALBA Berlin (0-1) in their last game. Despite Miralles' good performance the sixth-placed ALBA Berlin lost 63-77 in Madrid to the higher-ranked (#4) Real in the group E of Euroleague. He was the top scorer with 14 points. Miralles also added 4 rebounds in 21 minutes. This year Miralles' overall stats are: 6.6ppg and 4.3rpg in the 11 games. He used to play for the Spanish national team eight years ago.

   #6. Power forward Victor Claver (207-88, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a Portland Trail Blazers' victory against the Philadelphia 76ers (15-17) 89-85 in the NBA last Saturday. Claver scored 8 points. The Portland Trail Blazers have 16-14 record this season. Claver's total stats this year are: 2.0ppg and 2.1rpg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Spanish National Team roster.

   #7. Former international guard Ricky Rubio (192-90, currently plays in NBA) couldn't help the Minnesota Timberwolves (14-13) in their game against the Houston Rockets (17-14) in the NBA. Rubio scored 8 points in 21 minutes. The Minnesota Timberwolves were edged 87-84 in Houston by the Rockets. But the season just started, so everything may happen. This year Rubio's total stats are: 4.2ppg, 2.0rpg, 4.0apg and 1.2spg in the five games. He used to play for the Spanish national team two years ago.

   #8. Point guard Daniel Munoz (183-87, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the American in their game against the University of Kansas (0-0) in the NCAA. He recorded 6 points. The American was crushed 89-57 in Lawrence, KS by the University of Kansas. Munoz plays fourth season for the team. Munoz has averaged so far 8.3ppg, 5.1rpg and 3.7apg. He used to play for the Spanish U17 national team back in 2003.


The list of other players, who all have Spanish passport but never been selected to any of Spanish national teams:

   #1. Experienced Luis Scola (206-F/C-80, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA could not help the Phoenix Suns (11-21) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Phoenix Suns lost 107-111 on the road to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Scola had a double-double by scoring 33 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 2 blocks in 43 minutes. It was Suns' sixth consecutive loss in a row. Scola has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 12.8ppg, 6.3rpg and 1.9apg in the 32 games he played so far. Scola has a dual citizenship: Argentinian and Spanish.

   #2. Tiago Splitter (211-C/F-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA) led San Antonio Spurs to an easy victory against the Dallas Mavericks (13-19) crushing them 111-86 in the NBA last Sunday. Splitter scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 27 minutes. The San Antonio Spurs have quite an impressive 25-8 record this season. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Splitter has relatively good stats this year: 9.5ppg, 4.9rpg and 1.4apg in the 33 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Brazilian and Spanish.

   #3. Ontario Lett (198-F-79, college: Pittsburgh, currently plays in Iran) led Naft Sepahan to a victory over the closely-ranked Al Badr (3-8) 100-88 in the Iranian Superleague in Monday night's game. Lett was MVP of the game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 29 points and getting 13 rebounds. Lett also added and 4 steals. Naft Sepahan Tehran (2-9) closes the standings in the Superleague. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Lett is currently first on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (first place). This season he has very high stats. Lett averages: 27.0ppg, 8.5rpg and 3.5spg. He is a naturalized American. Lett used to play for Calpe Aguas in Spanish league.

   #4. Omar Quintero (183-PG-81, college: S.Nazarene, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican LNBP (second division) was not able to help Huracanes (20-15) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Huracanes lost 88-100 in Xalapa to the leading Halcones UV. Quintero was the top scorer with 16 points. He also added 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 34 minutes. Quintero has relatively good stats this year: 14.0ppg, 3.9rpg and 4.4apg in the 25 games. He has both Spanish and Mexican nationalities.

   #5. Rafael Lopez (204-C-86, currently plays in France), who plays in the French ProB (second division) was not able to secure a victory for Denain Voltaire (5-12) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Lopez's very good performance Denain Voltaire was defeated 95-84 in Antibes by the second-ranked Olympique. He was the second best scorer with 19 points. Lopez also added 9 rebounds and 3 assists. It's Lopez's first season with the team. He has averaged so far 8.6ppg, 5.7rpg and 1.6apg.

   #6. Ignacio Ordin (183-PG-78, currently plays in France) was the major contributor in Pau-Lacq-Orthez's victory against the league outsider Bordeaux crushing them 109-64 in the French ProB (second division) in Wednesday night's game. Ordin recorded 13 points and added 5 passes in a mere 18 minutes. He has averaged so far 8.4ppg, 2.0rpg and 2.9apg in the 16 games.

   #7. Aigars Skele (192-F-92, currently plays in Latvia) couldn't help Barons kvartals in their game against VEF Riga in the Latvian LBL. Skele recorded 7 points. His team was defeated 84-72. He has averaged so far 5.5ppg, 2.8rpg and 1.3apg.

   #8. Jeffrey Bonds (199-F-82, college: Cal Poly Pomona, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help LTi 46ers in their game against Mitteldeutscher BC in the German BBL. Bonds scored 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 34 minutes. His team lost 88-93. He has averaged so far 6.5ppg and 3.5rpg in the four games. Bonds is a naturalized American. He used to play for Basquet Muro in Spanish league.

   #9. Martin Calvo (198-F-88, currently plays in United Kingdom) couldn't help the league outsider Liverpool Mersey Tigers in their game against Manchester Giants in the British BBL. Calvo scored 5 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, passed 4 assists and added 4 blocks. His team was crushed by 31 points 96-65. Calvo is currently fifth on the list of best blockers. He has averaged so far 8.3ppg, 5.1rpg and 3.7apg. Calvo also holds two passports: Argentinian and Spanish.

   #10. Marco Porcher (193-G-92, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the FIU in their game against the Middle Tennessee State University in the NCAA. He recorded 5 points in 14 minutes. His team was badly defeated by 17 points 69-52. Porcher has averaged so far 8.3ppg, 5.1rpg and 3.7apg in the 10 games.

Cordobasket (EBA) agreed terms with 18-year old point guard Carlos Garcia (178-98) from Smurfit Kappa BBall Cordoba. In 21 EBA games he had 4.8ppg, 1.9rpg, 2.1apg and 1.3spg last season. The previous (14-15) season Garcia played at Baloncesto Sevilla 2nd team where in 22 EBA games he recorded just 2.6ppg and 1.4apg. Unicaja Malaga (Liga Endesa) agreed on terms of a training camp deal with 27-year old naturalized Dominican power forward Juan Garcia (201-89, agency: Duran International). The last season Garcia played at La ICL Manresa where in 28 Liga Endesa games he had 3.9ppg and 3.3rpg. The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others he won Dominican Rep.
