Serge Ibaka's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Spaniards playing currently abroad - Jan 9, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Spaniards who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Serge Ibaka

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Serge Ibaka (208-89, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Oklahoma City Thunder (26-8) in their last game. Despite Ibaka's very good performance the Oklahoma City Thunder was edged 101-99 on the road by the Washington Wizards. He had a double-double by scoring 26 points and getting 11 rebounds. Ibaka also added 2 blocks in 35 minutes on the court. Ibaka has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 14.8ppg, 8.6rpg, 2.9bpg, 2FGP: 58.6%(204-348), 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 81.1% in the 34 games he played so far. Ibaka has a dual citizenship: Congolese and Spanish. Ex-C.B. L'Hospitalet player is currently a member of the Spanish senior national team.

Marc Gasol

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Marc Gasol (216-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He was not able to help the Memphis Grizzlies (22-10) in their last game. Despite Gasol's good performance the Memphis Grizzlies were edged 86-84 in Portland by the Trail Blazers. He scored 12 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, passed 3 assists and added 8 blocks in 38 minutes. It's Gasol's fifth season with the team. Gasol has very impressive stats this year: 13.7ppg, 7.5rpg, 3.8apg, 1.9bpg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 49.8% and FT: 88.5% in the 32 games. He is in the roster of the Spanish senior national team.

   #3. The Spanish player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced international power forward Pau Gasol (213-80, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. Gasol was not able to secure a victory for the Los Angeles Lakers (15-19) in their last game. Despite his good performance the Los Angeles Lakers lost 99-103 in Philadelphia to the 76ers. Gasol scored 11 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 36 minutes. It was Lakers' fourth consecutive loss in a row. Gasol is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in Lakers' roster. He has very impressive stats this season: 12.2ppg, 8.4rpg, 3.8apg, 1.4bpg, 2FGP: 42.6%, 3FGP: 30.4% and FT: 74.1% in the 25 games. Gasol is also a member of the Spanish senior national team.

   #4. Point guard Jose Manuel Calderon (192-81, currently plays in NBA) couldn't help the Toronto Raptors (12-22) in their game against the Oklahoma City Thunder (26-8) in the NBA. Despite his good performance on Sunday night He recorded a double-double by scoring 10 points and making 11 passes. Calderon has been at the team for eight years. Calderon is currently seventh on the list of best passers. He has very reliable stats this season: 10.1ppg, 2.6rpg and 7.7apg. Calderon is also Spanish national team player.

Former international guard Ricky Rubio (192-90, currently plays in NBA) managed to help Minnesota Timberwolves in a victory against the Atlanta Hawks (20-13) 108-103 in the NBA on Tuesday night. Rubio scored only 4 points, made 8 passes and 4 steals in 19 minutes. The Minnesota Timberwolves have 16-15 record this season. This year Rubio's overall stats are: 4.2ppg, 1.8rpg, 4.7apg and 1.7spg in the six games. He used to play for the Spanish national team two years ago.

   #6. Power forward Victor Claver (207-88, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a Portland Trail Blazers' victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves (16-15) 102-97 in the NBA last Saturday. Claver scored 5 points in 11 minutes. The Portland Trail Blazers have 19-15 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Claver's first year with the team. This season his total stats are: 2.3ppg and 2.1rpg in the 17 games. Claver is an international player who is currently on the senior Spanish National Team roster.

Former international center Albert Miralles (208-82, also represented by Interperformances, currently plays in Germany) helped ALBA Berlin win their game against the 16th-ranked New Yorker Phantoms (6-11) crushing them 80-58 in the German BBL last Sunday. Miralles scored 5 points. ALBA Berlin (11-5) is placed third in the BBL. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. Miralles has averaged so far 6.1ppg and 3.3rpg. He used to play for the Spanish national team eight years ago.

Daniel Munoz

   #8. Point guard Daniel Munoz (183-87, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the American in their game against the Cornell University (0-0) in the NCAA, despite his very good performance in Sunday night's game. He scored 13 points and added 7 assists in 36 minutes. But the American lost 60-68 at home to the Cornell University. Munoz plays fourth season for the team. Munoz has averaged so far 5.4ppg, 2.8rpg and 1.3apg in the 15 games. He used to play for the Spanish U17 national team back in 2003.

Francisco Robles

   #9. Former U20 international guard Francisco Robles (195-81, currently plays in United Kingdom) couldn't help Bristol Acadamy Flyers (7-4) in their game against Worthing Thunder (1-10) in the British EBL D1 (second division). Despite his good performance on Saturday night Robles scored 12 points, made 3 passes and 3 steals. Robles belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #7. He has averaged so far 9.3ppg, 2.3rpg and 3.7apg. Robles used to play for the Spanish U20 national team thirteen years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Spanish passport but never been selected to any of Spanish national teams:

   #1. Experienced Luis Scola (206-F/C-80, currently plays in NBA) led Phoenix Suns to a victory over the Philadelphia 76ers (15-21) 95-89 in the NBA last Wednesday. He was MVP of the game. Scola scored 21 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 9 assists. The Phoenix Suns have not so impressive 12-24 record this season. Scola has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 12.9ppg, 6.3rpg and 2.3apg. Scola has a dual citizenship: Argentinian and Spanish.

   #2. Tiago Splitter (211-C/F-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the Philadelphia 76ers (15-21) crushing them 109-86 in the NBA in Saturday night's game. Splitter recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 10 rebounds. The San Antonio Spurs have a solid 27-10 record this season. Splitter has relatively good stats this year: 9.4ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.4apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Brazilian and Spanish.

   #3. Gustavo Barrera (194-G-85, currently plays in Uruguay) was the major contributor in Hebraica's victory against the 13th-ranked Atletico Welcome (9-18) 82-75 in a derby game in the Uruguayan LUB in Tuesday night's game. He had a double-double by scoring 19 points and making 11 passes. Barrera also added 6 rebounds and 4 steals in 36 minutes. Hebraica Macabi (19-9) is placed fourth in Capital group. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Barrera is the league's best passer and also on the list of most steals (third place). This year he has very good stats: 14.0ppg, 4.1rpg, 7.5apg and 2.0spg in the 27 games he played so far. Barrera has both Spanish and Uruguayan nationalities.

   #4. Sergi Coll (204-F/C-82, currently plays in Portugal), who plays in the Portuguese LPB could not help Ovarense (7-3) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Ovarense was defeated 91-80 on the road by the leading Benfica. Coll was the top scorer with 28 points. He also added 7 rebounds. This season Coll has very high stats. He averages: 15.1ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.8apg and 1.2spg.

   #5. Caio Silveira (211-C-87, also represented by Interperformances, currently plays in Brazil) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Tijuca TC (1-10) crushing them 94-70 in a derby game in the Brazilian NBB in Saturday night's game. Silveira scored 12 points. Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (6-0) is placed first in the NBB. So far his team won all six games in the Regular Season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Silveira has relatively good stats this year: 11.4ppg and 6.0rpg. He also holds two passports: Spanish and Brazilian.

   #6. Omar Quintero (183-PG-81, college: S.Nazarene, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to Huracanes' victory against the closely-ranked Fuerza Regia 87-80 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Thursday night. He recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and making 13 passes. Quintero has relatively good stats this season: 14.1ppg, 4.0rpg and 4.6apg. He has Spanish and Mexican nationalities.

   #7. Arnette Hallman (199-F-88, currently plays in Portugal) contributed to Academica's victory against the eighth-ranked Fisica 70-63 in the Portuguese LPB in Sunday night's game. Hallman scored 15 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in a mere 18 minutes. Hallman is ranked ninth on the list of the top scorers in the league and also on the list of best rebounders (first place). He has very impressive stats this year: 15.3ppg, 12.5rpg, 2.9apg and 1.6spg in the 10 games. Hallman is a naturalized American. He used to play for Estudiantes de Lugo in Spanish league.

   #8. Jorge Calvo (190-G-87, currently plays in United Kingdom) contributed to a Leicester Riders' victory against the fifth-ranked Worcester Wolves 89-82 in the British BBL on Saturday night. Calvo scored 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 19 minutes. Calvo has averaged so far 4.4ppg, 2.8rpg, 2.4apg and 1.3spg in the 14 games.

   #9. Aigars Skele (192-F-92, currently plays in Latvia) helped Barons kvartals edge the closely-ranked Jurmala 66-64 in the Latvian LBL in Sunday night's game. He scored 7 points. Skele has averaged so far 5.4ppg, 2.8rpg and 1.3apg.

   #10. Marco Porcher (193-G-92, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped FIU win their game against the Florida A&M University 88-72 in the NCAA last Wednesday. He scored 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in a mere 17 minutes. Porcher has averaged so far 5.4ppg, 2.8rpg and 1.3apg in the 15 games.   



Marbella inks Juan Pedro Jimenez - 4 hours ago
Club Sanduba Marbellasigned 20-year old forward Juan Pedro Jimenez (199-97). He played last season at UCAM Murcia II in the EBA. In 22 games he had 10.0ppg, 3.5rpg and 1.4apg. Jimenez helped them to end the regular season as a second best team in the league. He has played previously for two other teams: Unicaja B Malaga and Clinicas Rincon. CB Agustinos-Eras E. Leclerc Leon (LEB Silver) confirmed in their roster 24-year old point guard Jose Medina (185-93). He played there last season. In 30 LEB Silver games he had 13.6ppg, 2.6rpg and 3.1apg. The previous (15-16) season Medina played at Smurfit Kappa BBall Cordoba (EBA) where in 21 games he recorded very impressive stats: 18.0ppg, 3.7rpg, 5.6apg (leader !!!) and 2.7spg (in top 4). Sammic Iraurgi Saski Baloia (LEB Gold) confirmed in their roster 28-year old swingman Ander Garcia (194-89). He played there last season. In 28 LEB Silver games he had 9.5ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.5apg. Garcia helped them to win the LEB Silver title. The previous (15-16) season he played at Zornotza (also in LEB Silver) where in 26 games he recorded 13.5ppg, 2.8rpg, 1.5apg and 1.0spg.
