Pete Mickeal
FC Barcelona and Caja Laboral became the first semifinalists of Copa Del Rey.
FC Barcelona came up with an unforgettable dramatic clash versus their archrivals Real Madrid in the first quarterfinal tonight. Barca needed two overtimes before eking out an impressive 111:108 victory. Pete Mickeal (199-F-78, college: Cincinnati) came up with 26 points to pace the winners. FC Barcelona led by three at halftime 49:46. They stretched the gap to 4 points heading into the fourth frame. But Real denied the deficit and surged ahead in the final term. Tomic came up big late in regulation knotting things up at 77. Sergio Llull (192-SG-87) had a chance to win the game for Real but missed a three-pointer. Barcelona jumped to an 85:79 lead in the extra period. But the Madrid team came from behind to post an 89:87 lead. Real seemed on their way to the victory when Sergio Rodriguez and Jaycee Carroll made it 93:90 with seconds left. Erazem Lorbek got fouled and was put to the stripe. He drained first free throw and then missed the second one on purpose. Ante Tomic (217-C-87) grabbed a crucial offensive rebound and assisted Erazem Lorbek for a tying bucket 93:93. Barcelona jumped to the lead once again in the second overtime. This time they protected it well and Navarro made it 109:105 for the Catalan team. Sergio Llull hit a mad three-pointer to narrow the gap but Huertas sank two free throws to seal an incredible win for FC Barcelona Regal. Ante Tomic had 20 points, while Huertas added 13 points for the winners. Sergio Llull answered with 23 points for Real Madrid. Sergio Rodriguez had 18 points in defeat.
In the meantime hosting Caja Laboral had little problems against CAI Zaragoza 88:64. The visitors were up by one at halftme but Caja Laboral used a 19:0 run in the third term to surge ahead for good. Maciej Lampe (211-F/C-85) delivered 17 points, while Thomas Heurtel (188-G-89) added 16 points for the winning side. Pablo Aguilar (203-F/C-89) answered with game-high 23 points for CAI Zaragoza. Norel and Joseph Jones chipped in 10 points apiece in the losing case.
