We bring you last week's top performances from Spaniards who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international center Marc Gasol (216-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Memphis Grizzlies (39-19) in their last game. Despite Gasol's very good performance the Memphis Grizzlies lost 91-98 on the road to the Miami Heat. He was the top scorer with 24 points. Gasol also added 9 rebounds and dished 4 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) in 36 minutes on the court. It's Gasol's fifth season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Gasol averages: 13.9ppg, 7.8rpg, 3.9apg, 1.6bpg, 2FGP: 49.0%, 3FGP: 8.3% and FT: 87.4% in the 58 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Spanish senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Serge Ibaka (208-89, currently plays in NBA). Ibaka led Oklahoma City Thunder to an easy victory against the New Orleans Hornets (21-40) crushing them 119-74 in the NBA last Wednesday. He recorded 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. The Oklahoma City Thunder has a solid 44-16 record this season. This year Ibaka has very high stats. He averages: 13.6ppg, 7.8rpg, 2.9bpg, 2FGP: 57.6%(318-552), 3FGP: 40.5% and FT: 77.0%. Ibaka has a dual citizenship: Congolese and Spanish. Ex-C.B. L'Hospitalet player is in the roster of the Spanish senior national team.

   #3. The Spanish player who performed third best last week abroad was former international guard Ricky Rubio (192-90, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. Rubio was not able to help the Minnesota Timberwolves (20-37) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his good performance the Minnesota Timberwolves were crushed 116-94 in Los Angeles by the Lakers. Rubio recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and making the same number of passes. He also added 8 rebounds. Rubio has relatively good stats this season: 8.7ppg, 3.4rpg, 7.1apg, 2.3spg, 2FGP: 37.4%, 3FGP: 18.2% and FT: 77.1%. He played for the Spanish national team two years ago.

Jose Manuel Calderon

   #4. Point guard Jose Manuel Calderon (192-81, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a 1-point Detroit Pistons' victory against the Washington Wizards (19-39) 96-95 in the NBA on Wednesday night. He recorded 6 points, 4 rebounds and 18 assists. The Detroit Pistons have 23-39 record this season. This year Calderon has very high stats. He averages: 12.1ppg, 3.1rpg, 7.1apg and 1.1spg. Calderon is also Spanish national team player.

   #5. International power forward Victor Claver (207-88, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves (20-37) 109-94 in the NBA in Saturday night's game. He recorded 10 points in only 14 minutes. The Portland Trail Blazers have 28-31 record this season. It's Claver's first year with the team. This year Claver's overall stats are: 2.9ppg and 2.4rpg in the 35 games. He plays currently for the Spanish national team.

Point guard Daniel Munoz (183-87, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the American (5-9) in their game against the Lafayette College (10-4) in the NCAA, despite his very good performance last Saturday. He recorded 13 points and added 6 passes in 40 minutes. But the American lost 72-80 in Easton, PA to the Lafayette College. It was American's fourth consecutive loss in a row. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Munoz has been at the team for four years. This season Munoz's total stats are: 4.2ppg and 3.7rpg in the 35 games. He is a former U17 international player as he played for the Spanish team ten years ago.

   #7. Former U18 international point guard Miguel Ortega (188-91, currently plays in Denmark) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Horsens IC (19-8) 97-79 in the Danish Ligaen on Thursday night. Ortega scored 6 points, had 5 rebounds and dished 7 assists in 32 minutes. Randers Cimbria Basketball (13-14) is placed fifth in the Ligaen. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Ortega's first season with the team. Ortega is the league's best passer and also on the list of most steals (fourth place). He has very reliable stats this year: 12.7ppg, 3.5rpg, 7.4apg and 2.0spg in the 26 games. Ortega used to play for the Spanish U18 national team four years ago.

   #8. An experienced point guard Salvador Camps (178-79, currently plays in Ireland) couldn't help Moycullen (7-13) in their game against Killester (8-12) in the Irish Superleague. He recorded 6 points and added 6 assists in 16 minutes. The bottom-ranked Moycullen lost 67-77 in Dublin to the higher-ranked (#6) Killester. Camps' team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Camps is ranked second on the list of the best passers in the league and also on the list of most steals (second place). This year he has very good stats: 11.5ppg, 2.9rpg, 7.1apg and 2.5spg in the 13 games. Camps used to play for the Spanish national team back in 2001.


The list of other players, who all have Spanish passport but never been selected to any of Spanish national teams:

   #1. Tiago Splitter (211-C/F-85, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in NBA) led San Antonio Spurs to an easy victory against the Sacramento Kings (21-41) crushing them 130-102 in the NBA on Friday night. He had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 11 rebounds in 23 minutes. The San Antonio Spurs have quite an impressive 47-14 record this season. Splitter has relatively good stats this year: 10.4ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.4apg in the 61 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Brazilian and Spanish.

   #2. Experienced Luis Scola (206-F/C-80, currently plays in NBA) was the major contributor in an overtime Phoenix Suns' victory against the San Antonio Spurs (47-14) 105-101 in the NBA last Wednesday. Scola recorded 15 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 20 minutes. The Phoenix Suns have 21-39 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Scola has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 12.7ppg, 6.2rpg and 2.3apg in the 60 games. Scola is another player who holds two passports: Argentinian and Spanish.

   #3. Caio Silveira (211-C-87, also represented by Interperformances, currently plays in Brazil) led Flamengo to an easy victory against the 13th-ranked Mogi (9-16) crushing them 86-64 in the Brazilian NBB last Monday. Silveira scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (6-0) is placed first in the NBB. So far his team won all six games in the Regular Season. This season Silveira has relatively solid stats: 12.7ppg and 7.0rpg. He has both Spanish and Brazilian nationalities.

   #4. Gustavo Barrera (194-G-85, currently plays in Uruguay), who plays in the Uruguayan LUB could not help Hebraica (2-5) in their last game. Despite Barrera's good performance the eighth-placed Hebraica lost 67-71 in a derby game to the higher-ranked (#4) Malvin in the Serie 1. He recorded 13 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists in 37 minutes. It was Hebraica's third consecutive loss in a row. Barrera is currently first on the league's list of best passers and also on the list of most steals (second place). He has very reliable stats this year: 13.8ppg, 4.0rpg, 7.6apg and 2.1spg in the 40 games. Barrera also holds two passports: Spanish and Uruguayan.

   #5. Sergi Coll (204-F/C-82, currently plays in Portugal), who plays in the Portuguese LPB was not able to help Ovarense (10-5) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Ovarense was defeated 84-77 at home by the lower-ranked Vitoria SC (#5). Coll was the top scorer with 19 points. He also added 6 rebounds. This season Coll has relatively solid stats: 14.4ppg, 6.5rpg, 1.5apg and 1.4spg.

   #6. Jose Manuel Coego (204-C/F-78, currently plays in Portugal) led CAB Madeira to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Sampaense crushing them 103-77 in the Portuguese LPB last Saturday. He scored 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 30 minutes. This year Coego has relatively solid stats: 10.5ppg and 5.3rpg in the 15 games.

   #7. Devin Davis (202-F-74, college: Miami, OH, currently plays in Argentina), who plays in the Argentinian LigaA was not able to secure a victory for Wuber-Est.Bahia (19-20) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his good performance Wuber-Est.Bahia was edged 80-78 on the road by the much higher-ranked Boca Juniors (#4). Davis recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 10 rebounds. Davis' total stats this season are: 8.5ppg, 6.5rpg and 1.4apg. He is a naturalized American. Davis used to play for 13.6ppg, Reb-1(9.8), 2apg, in April '98 signed with Huelva in Spanish league.

   #8. Alvaro Calvo (202-F-83, agency: Dynamics Global Management, currently plays in Brazil) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Suzano 89-74 in the Brazilian NBB in Monday night's game. He scored 7 points in only 12 minutes. This year Calvo's total stats are: 8.6ppg, 4.3rpg and 1.2apg in the 19 games.

   #9. Carlos Cherry (184-PG-79, agency: Global Sports Plaza, currently plays in France) couldn't help Quimper UJAP in their game against JA Vichy in the French NM1 (third division). Despite his very good performance last Saturday He was the top scorer with 19 points. Cherry also added 4 rebounds and dished 9 assists (went 9 for 9 at the free throw line !!!). Cherry is currently second on the league's list of best passers. He has very reliable stats this season: 14.0ppg, 3.3rpg, 6.1apg and 1.2spg.

   #10. Ariel Eslava (201-F/C-79, currently plays in Argentina) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked La Union 88-72 in the Argentinian LigaA on Friday night. Eslava scored 8 points and added 3 assists in only 11 minutes. This year his total stats are: 4.2ppg and 3.7rpg in the 35 games. Eslava has Spanish and Argentinian nationalities.

Samardo Samuels (ex Enel Brindisi) signs at Real Betis - 23 hours ago
Betis Energia Plus Sevilla (LEB Gold) landed 28-year old Jamaican ex-international power forward Samardo Samuels (206-122kg-89, college: Louisville). He played most recently at Enel Brindisi in Italian Serie A. In 7 games he averaged 7.9ppg and 4.6rpg last season. Samuels also played that season for Jiangsu Dragons in Chinese CBA where in 22 games he had very impressive stats: 20.2ppg, 7.5rpg and 1.4apg. Ourense Termal (LEB Gold) landed 25-year old Australian forward Dan Trist (206-105kg-92, college: Lafayette). He played in the summer at Norths Bears in Australian WARATAH. In 11 games he averaged impressive 23.5ppg, 12.6rpg and 2.5apg. The last season Trist played at Horsens IC in Danish Ligaen where in 34 games he had 13.3ppg, 6.1rpg and 1.2apg.
