Real Madrid sneaked past Zalgiris in a first-class basketball thriller in Kaunas tonight. Nikola Mirotic (207-F/C-91) scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace Real to the ninth win in EuroLeague Top 16 Group E.
Zalgiris started the game aggressively. The hosts erupted for 29 points in the opening quarter to take a 10-point lead. Kaukenas opened a 12-point lead early in the second quarter. The gap grew at 14-point mark midway through the second frame. However Real managed to trim the deficit at 4-point mark at the interval 40:44. The hosts opened the second half with 7 points in a row to take an 11-point lead. Real answered with a 16:2 rally to grab a 60:56 advantage. They entered the fourth quarter up by two points 63:61. Zalgiris quickly regained the lead in the fourth period and soon Mindaugas Kuzminskas (205-F-89) gave the hosts a 77:70 lead. But Real stuck around. Nikola Mirotic pulled the Spanish team within two 81:83 with 12 seconds remaining in regulation. McGrath sank one of two free throw attempts and Sergio Rodriguez was put to the stripe. He drained the first one and missed the second one. However Nikola Mirotic grabbed a crucial offensive rebound and got fouled. He went deadly from the stripe to send the game into overtime. Jaycee Carroll (188-G-83, agency: Priority Sports) and Nikola Mirotic drilled three trebles in the extra period as Real made it 99:94. Sergio Rodriguez and Nikola Mirotic then scored six free throws in a row to keep Real out of trouble. Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Lavrinovic put the hosts within one in the dying seconds but Zalgiris simply ran out of time at the end. Jaycee Carroll produced 21 points, while Sergio Llull (192-SG-87) added 14 points for the winners. Tremmell Darden (194-G/F-81, college: Niagara) answered with 20 points for Zalgiris.
