LFB Round 24: Gipuzkoa UPV defeat Gernika in the closest game of the week - Mar 20, 2017

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in LFB. There was no lack of excitement in the last round games. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.

The most exciting game of round 24 in the LFB took place in San Sebastian. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of higher ranked Gernika (15-9) to eighth ranked Gipuzkoa UPV (12-12) 70-69 on Saturday evening. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Gernika won third quarter 19-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Gernika 39-28 including 26 on the defensive glass. Gipuzkoa UPV looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Kenyan-Canadian power forward Adut Bulgak (193-92, college: Florida St.) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 12 points and 18 rebounds and Senegalese power forward Oumoul Sarr (185-84) who added 20 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was international point guard Maria Asurmendi (168-86) with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Gernika's coach Mario Lopez rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Gipuzkoa UPV have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Campus Promete. Gernika at the other side keeps the third position with nine games lost. Gipuzkoa UPV is looking forward to face Campus Promete (#7) in Logrono in the next round. Gernika will play at home against Mann Filter (#10) and is hoping to win this game.
The game between Top Four teams took place in Vitoria-Gasteiz. 4th ranked host Araski (13-11) was smashed by first ranked Perfumerias Avenida (22-1) 63-42. The winners were led by American swingman Alana Beard (185-82, college: Duke) who scored that evening 15 points and 9 rebounds and Adaora Elonu supported her with 16 points and 6 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Even 11 points and 6 rebounds by American Margaret Roundtree (183-88, college: Gardner-Webb) did not help to save the game for Araski. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Perfumerias Avenida have an impressive 17-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 22-1 record. Newly promoted Araski dropped to the fifth place with 11 games lost. They share the position with Cadi La Seu. Perfumerias Avenida will play against league's second-placed Argon Uni Girona at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Araski will play against Gran Canaria in Las Palmas and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Cadi La Seu have an impressive five-game winning streak. They moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Araski. Loser Campus Promete dropped to the seventh position with 12 games lost. They share it with Gipuzkoa UPV. Cadi La Seu will meet league's second-placed Argon Uni Girona on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Campus Promete will play against Gipuzkoa UPV (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Fourteenth-ranked Gran Canaria (4-20) gave a tough game to tenth ranked Al-Qazeres (10-14) in Caceres. Al-Qazeres managed to secure only two-point victory 68-66. However their fans expected much easier game. It was a good game for Julie Forster who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists. Al-Qazeres moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Mann Filter. Gran Canaria lost third consecutive game. They stay dead last with 20 lost games. Al-Qazeres' next round opponent will be Zamarat (#12) in Zamora. Gran Canaria will play at home against Araski and hope to win that game.
Important game to mention about took place in Zaragoza. Thirteenth ranked CREF Hola (6-18) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging higher ranked Mann Filter (10-14) 56-53 on Sunday evening. Worth to mention a great performance of Rachel Allison who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!). CREF Hola maintains thirteenth position with 6-18 record. Loser Mann Filter keeps the ninth place with 14 games lost. CREF Hola will face higher ranked Universitario de Ferrol (#4) at home in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.

In the last two games of round 24 Zamarat lost to Ferrol on the opponent's court 51-61. Bembibre was outscored by Girona in a home game 54-91.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 16 points and 5 rebounds by Alisia Jenkins of Mann Filter.

Mann Filter - CREF Hola 53-56

Important game to mention about took place in Zaragoza. Thirteenth ranked CREF Hola (6-18) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging higher ranked Mann Filter (10-14) 56-53 on Sunday evening. The guests trailed by 2 points after three quarters before their 16-11 charge, which allowed them to win the game. CREF Hola made 20-of-25 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Worth to mention a great performance of American Rachel Allison (185-87, college: Baylor) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!) and Latvian point guard Elina Babkina (173-89) who added 16 points during the contest. The best for the losing side was American forward Alisia Jenkins (186-94, college: S.Florida) with 16 points and 5 rebounds and international center Lucila Pascua (196-83) scored 6 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. CREF Hola maintains thirteenth position with 6-18 record. Loser Mann Filter keeps the ninth place with 14 games lost. CREF Hola will face higher ranked Universitario de Ferrol (#4) at home in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.

Very expected game when 12th ranked Zamarat (7-17) was defeated on the road by fifth ranked Universitario de Ferrol (14-10) 61-51 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Universitario de Ferrol. Zamarat was better in second period 11-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Worth to mention a great performance of American swingman Shacobia Barbee (179-94, college: Georgia, agency: LBM Management) who helped to win the game recording 14 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals and power forward Beatriz Sanchez (190-89) who added 16 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was Brazilian forward Isabela Lyra (180-94) with 21 points and Czech point guard Katerina Bartonova (174-90) scored 10 points and 8 rebounds. Universitario de Ferrol have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place. Loser Zamarat keeps the twelfth position with 17 games lost. Very predictable result when second ranked Argon Uni Girona (20-3) smashed on the road 11th ranked Socinsa Bembibre (9-15) 91-54 on Saturday. The game without a history. Argon Uni Girona led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Argon Uni Girona outrebounded Socinsa Bembibre 49-15 including a 36-10 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Argon Uni Girona especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.9 percentage. Worth to mention a great performance of Nigerian-American Ifunanya Ibekwe (187-89, college: Arizona) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 21 points and 16 rebounds and Greek forward Artemis Spanou (188-93, college: Robert Morris) who added 19 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. Four Argon Uni Girona players scored in double figures. Argon Uni Girona's coach Eric Suris felt very confident using 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Fourteenth-ranked Gran Canaria (4-20) gave a tough game to tenth ranked Al-Qazeres (10-14) in Caceres. Al-Qazeres managed to secure only two-point victory 68-66. However their fans expected much easier game. It looked good early as Gran Canaria took a 1-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Al-Qazeres had a 17-12 second period charge getting the lead and Gran Canaria was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 66-68. It was a good game for American power forward Julie Forster (185-91, college: Albany) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists. American-Italian swingman Pamela Rosanio (178-86, college: Massachusetts) contributed with 17 points and 4 assists for the winners. Four Al-Qazeres players scored in double figures. American Amber Holt (183-85, college: Middle Tenn.St.) replied with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and Czech forward Michaela Stejskalova (186-87) added 15 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Gran Canaria. Al-Qazeres moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Mann Filter. Gran Canaria lost third consecutive game. They stay dead last with 20 lost games. Adareva signs Steele just out of college - 5 hours ago
CD Adareva (LF2) signed 23-year old American forward Shay Steele (188-94). She just graduated from Morehead State University (NCAA). Steele has played there for the last four years. In 29 games she had 9.9ppg, 4.9rpg, 1.3spg and 1.6bpg last season. As mentioned above she is just out of the college and it will be her first season as a pro.
