LNA Round 16: Hope-GBA beats Pully by three after a very close game - Feb 3, 2012

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in LNA.

The most exciting game of round 16 in the LNA took place in Bernex. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 6th ranked Pully (4-10) to fifth ranked Hope-GBA (7-7) 72-69 in the game for the fifth place. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 20-14 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Hope-GBA forced 25 Pully turnovers and outrebounded them 44-28 including 31 on the defensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of international guard Dorothee Studer (168-92) who helped to win the game recording 27 points and 5 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field). Forward Rosalie Grobet (185-92) contributed with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Hope-GBA's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Senegalese guard Diodio Diouf (170-84) replied with 29 points, 6 assists and 7 steals for Pully. Hope-GBA maintains fifth position with 7-7 record. Pully at the other side keeps the sixth place with ten games lost. Hope-GBA are looking forward to face league's leader Helios in Vetroz in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Pully will play on the road against Basel (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An interesting game for Helios (14-0) which played road game in Fribourg against their biggest opponent Fribourg (11-3). Top-ranked Helios had an easy win 91-63. American players dominated the game. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Shyra Ely (188-83, college: Tennessee, agency: Merit Sports) who helped to win the game recording 25 points and 8 rebounds and Whitney Boddie who added 24 points, 5 assists and 10 steals during the contest. At the losing side center Celeste Trahan (184-85, college: Elizabeth City, agency: LBM Management) responded with 25 points and 9 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Undefeated Helios have an impressive 14-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 14-0 record. Defending champion Fribourg keeps the second place with three games lost. They share the position with Riva Basket. Helios will play against Hope-GBA (#5) in Bernex in the next round. Fribourg will play at home against Highflyers in Luzern and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Bottom-ranked Ovronnaz-Mart. managed to get a second victory, breaking the twelve-game losing streak on Wednesday night. This time newly promoted Ovronnaz-Mart. won against seventh-ranked Nyon in Martigny 52-47. The winners were led by Jamila Griffith who scored that evening 29 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Even a double-double of 19 points and 17 rebounds by Tiffany Benson did not help to save the game for Nyon. Newly promoted Ovronnaz-Mart. maintains ninth position with 2-12 record. Nyon lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the seventh place with 11 games lost. Ovronnaz-Mart. will meet league's second-placed Riva Basket in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Nyon will have a break next round.
The game in Luzern was also worth to mention about. Fifth ranked Basel (7-6) played at the court of 8th ranked Highflyers (3-11). Basel managed to secure a 8-point victory 85-77. Basel have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place. Highflyers lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with 11 games lost. Basel's next round opponent will be Pully (#6) at home. Highflyers will play against Fribourg.



Fribourg - Helios 63-91

An interesting game for Helios (14-0) which played road game in Fribourg against their biggest opponent Fribourg (11-3). Top-ranked Helios had an easy win 91-63. Fribourg was ahead by 2 points at the halftime before a 59-29 second half run of Helios. They made 18-of-23 charity shots (78.3 percent) during the game. They also forced 29 Fribourg turnovers. Strangely Fribourg outrebounded Helios 32-19 including 23 on the defensive glass. American players dominated the game. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Shyra Ely (188-83, college: Tennessee, agency: Merit Sports) who helped to win the game recording 25 points and 8 rebounds and guard Whitney Boddie (173-87, college: Auburn, agency: Josep and Nicolas) who added 24 points, 5 assists and 10 steals during the contest. The guests were already 15 points ahead after 3 quarters before a 16-9 Highflyers' run in the last quarter cut the lead to 85-77 at the end of the game. Basel have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place. Highflyers lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with 11 games lost. Basel's next round opponent will be Pully (#6) at home. Highflyers will play against Fribourg.

LNA is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 9 rounds left. The game between third ranked Winterthur (5-3) and eighth ranked BBC Troist. 29-year old power forward Marielle Giroud (182-F/C-87) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for second-ranked Helios and receives a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 8. The game in Geneve supposed to be quite interesting. Second ranked Helios (6-2) played at the court of 5th ranked Geneve Basket (3-4). Helios smashed Geneve Basket 85-41 on Sunday. The game without a history. Helios led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter.
